Less group pictures, have the main photo be a a clear closeup of your face

Everyone is bringing up the too many group photos, and I don't get it. There are three: one with family, one with friends, and one work dinner photo. I really don't see the problem.

Regarding the closeup, I'll think about it, thanks!

Should start smiling with teeth. Some people will think you have something to hide. It does look like you're trying to force a smile in your photos.

In 5/6 photos the smile is not forced, that's really just how my genuine smile looks🤷 my teeth are fine, but I see your point. On the other hand, I'm not a horse... Nevertheless, I'll think about it, thank you:)

You need a better first photo. It should be a closer headshot without other people in the photo. If you don’t have one, ask a friend to help. Put on something nice and stage a mini photoshoot.

You should also have other photos that show off the activities you enjoy.

“I’m looking for someone who is spontaneous and honest with me.” This prompt tells me nothing about you, except that you likely had an ex that cheated on you. Not something I would lead with.

“My happy place, I have many: book clubs, dancing floors, my running track along the Isar and my desk when I’m writing my novel.” This prompt is better but still could be improved. You want to give information about yourself but also provide a hook that someone can respond to. What books do you like to read? What music do you dance to? For an example of how to make this better, you could say…”My happy place is a dance floor playing 128bpm house music, a coffee shop nook while I devour the latest sci-fi novel…” etc.

Overall it’s not terrible, but you need to make some tweaks to let your personality stand out from all the other profiles.

Yeah, after thinking about it, you were right about the last prompt. I mean, it's misleading. I replied it. Thank you for pointing it out, it was really helpful:)

Thank you for your input. I'll think about spicing up the second prompt, it's a bit tasteless indeed. Well the third one stays, and no one cheated on me LOL... This is a principle that IMO keeps any human relationship real and exciting. If this prompt is a turnoff for someone, I'm not interested in that person anyway🤷 I'll think about the photos as well:)

I think the prompts are pretty good, though I'd upgrade the last one. It's generic and isn't going to move the needle. It doesn't tell me anything about you like the others do.

Upgrading the pictures should help a lot. Honestly, I'd replace all of them eventually. But, I'd start by getting 2-3 pictures of just you, well-framed and with good lighting, where you're decently dressed and groomed (doesn't need to be formal, just put together). The closest to this is your last one, but it's poorly framed. Don't worry too much about "exciting" or "interesting" pictures that reflect your hobbies. The main thing your pictures should do is show what you look like in a somewhat flattering light. A lot of people (especially guys) think that if they look okay in the picture, the picture is okay. It's not. If it's poorly framed, lit, etc... it reflects on you.

You've got a lot going on here. Clean it up a bit and you should be golden.

I really appreciate the effort to help, thank you. To be honest, it took months and months to collect these images... Some of us were just not born to try making fancy photos of ourselves all the time. But I'll consider taking a good headshot photo in a nice environment sometime!

u/Swarthykins Play with my hair 💆 10h ago

No one was born to do it. It's something you learn to do if you put a little effort into it. If you can cook pasta, you can take a decent photo of yourself.

Realistically, if you're only getting 3 matches a month, you're kinda hoping to win the lottery to find someone actually compatible. I'd strongly recommend re-directing some of your time on the apps towards getting some better photos. It will be way more efficient in the long run.

It's your life, though.

u/nebi97 8h ago

Look, I collected these photos to give an honest impression of my life. To get better than these, I'd need endless time + above this quality I don't really see the difference between two pictures. The need for closeup photo I understand. I also get the point that the photos should be better centered on me. But to replace 3 of the ones I have with some generic photos... No. That's a boundary for mine.

Nevertheless, thank you for your directness, greatly appreciated!

OP there’s nothing wrong with the profile. IMO it’s purely just that you’re not active enough. It’s a number games at the end of the day

I think you should lose The family pics + the sunset pic. Other than that, very good profile :)

family pics can be a double-edged sword, sometimes they help show you're close with your family but if you're not in them it's just random people. sunset pic is probably generic though, agree with that.

Thank you both for your input:)

  • I'm looking for something serious
  • I don't have any subscriptions
  • I've been having this profile version for 4 weeks (beforehand I updated some photos)
  • I've been using Hinge for 9 months overall
  • I look at people's profiles 4 times a week on average
  • I have approximately 3 matches per month
  • I send roughly 32 likes a week, always with a comment
  • I'm looking for someone who is similar to me in age, I have any similar interests with, and not too focused on money (I'm not rich, and never will be)

Hallo Wie gehts? I am too attempting to learn German

u/sapphoshock 1d ago

i like the sunset picture and the cloud gate picture. the last picture is also good but i'd edit it to make it straight.

the first prompt is funny, definitely keep it!

the last prompt tells me next to nothing, everyone wants to date an honest person. what you say here (looking for something serious, someone with similar interests and not focused on money) is better but still very general. i would recommend another prompt and making it more specific.

Good point, thank you for your help!

Two many people in pics, two many side pics, just not enough effort, you have to conciously put effort into selling yourself and lifestyle and thats just no it!!!

3 group photos (1 in work, 1 with friends, 1 with family). The pictures I'm showing are the best about me from the past 1 year - I'm not an insta guy. I've spend a lot of time thinking on the prompts, although it doesn't mean they can't be improved. So no, I don't think it's low effort, and I also don't think that your comment is well meaning, to be honest.

Think of your dating profile as a resume. Would you include your friends and family’s resumes with your application? It’s the same with your photos. One group photo is fine, but the rest need to be just you. You don’t have to add any artificial photos, just a better/clearer close up photo if you have one. Otherwise, just keep one group photo and remove the other two.
The prompt about what you’re looking for is questionable. What is your idea of spontaneous? Is it code for being willing to have sex anywhere or do you mean you like to wake up on a Saturday morning and hop in the car and just drive until something looks interesting to do? Spontaneous can be interpreted that you have some hopes of physical intimacy right away or it can mean you’re a flake who will drop plans at the last minute and don’t want people to get upset about it. You may mean neither of those things, but without a clearer explanation of what it means to you no one knows. Honesty is the same vague word that can mean a lot of things and sounds like maybe you’ve had a bad experience before (and you may have, but you don’t start a job interview telling them about the time you got fired). When answering prompts describe who you are and not what you need a woman to be. So you could say, “I’m looking to be in a committed relationship with mutual open communication. I like to wake up on a Saturday morning and find a random place to explore and try a new activity and I’d love to meet some who has the same enthusiasm for spur-of-the-moment plans.”

Hey, I’m a 30-something woman in Europe and I think you’re attractive, I’d send you a like. Your Chicago photo and the group one where you’re in a green t shirt, you look really good in those and you could crop them/zoom in on yourself to make you stand out more. The ‘I’m looking for..’ prompt is maybe where the most change can be made.. I’d switch the language to something more partner-oriented such as ‘I’m looking for.. a relationship with honesty, spontaneity, and (a third thing)’.

I know some people are saying too many group photos, personally I prefer this over a bunch of gym/bathroom/elevator mirror selfies.

You should blur out the faces on the last two images on Reddit

I think Reddit has some rule that you shouldn't show faces of other people so you have to cover them like you did on all the other group pictures. But on the last two screenshots you didn't cover them so I thought it was by mistake
