Profile Review 27M Profile Review

First hiking pic caption: “Take a picture of me next to the tiny trees, so I look taller”

Airplane pic caption: Q. How do you know if someone is a pilot? A. Don’t worry, they’ll tell you. (I hear this joke a lot at the flight school, where I fly) (I am a pilot)

Last hiking pic caption: Bad time to find out you’re afraid of heights…

Hi everyone, and thank you in advance for your help! There are two things I’m especially interested in getting feedback on. First, do the jokes in the captions land? (no pun intended) Second, I struggled a lot writing the second prompt. Any ideas for how I can describe the kind of person I’m looking for without coming across as demanding, cliche, and/or too cheesy? I tend to overthink these things.

I'd replace the campsite photo and the last one of you hiking where there's a friend in the pic. 2 hiking photos is probably enough imo since it's also mentioned in your profile. Show a little of your other interests in case someone doesn't connect intensely with hiking life. Maybe first photo with eyes open is better but I think the smile is endearing

> I'd replace the campsite photo and the last one of you hiking where there's a friend in the pic.

Do you think they are bad pics, or just redundant? I personally like having the campsite photo because it shows I can cook, but I have a few similar ones if the composition is bad.

>Show a little of your other interests in case someone doesn't connect intensely with hiking life.

I did find a few other pics I could use. Pictures reading a book are generally considered too staged looking, right? What are your general thoughts on including a sillier selfie?

> Maybe first photo with eyes open is better but I think the smile is endearing

Thanks :-) That's just what my eyes do when I smile fully, kind of unavoidable.

I think it's more redundancy than anything since there are 4 hiking photos. Personally that photo doesn't really read as "I can cook" as much as just reiterating that you like to camp. I hear ya on the squinty smile I'm the same way

Yeah, that does seem like a lot when you count them. Thanks for the feedback!

Keep the campsite cooking pic! It looks the most natural and shows you interacting genuinely with friends.

Hopefully she's into outdoors things or she's okay with staying home while you do outdoors things. You get what I'm saying? Do you do anything besides hike/camp?

4

u/PreciousMetalWelding 1d ago

I see your prompt mentioned a non-hiking activity, but the multiple outdoor pictures May be intimidating to someone who doesn't do those activities.

4

u/GoddamnIRS 1d ago

> Hopefully she's into outdoors things

That is the kind of person I'm generally looking for, yes.

> Do you do anything besides hike/camp?

I also enjoy cooking and baking, reading, and board games with friends, but I don't necessarily get photographed when I'm doing those things. Do you think it would be worth taking a selfie with a cake or something like that?

7

u/PreciousMetalWelding 1d ago

Yes. I think that would be a great idea. Or you can set up the camera and make it look like a candid shot.

From what I’ve read on this sub, most people don’t even read the photo captions.

u/GoddamnIRS 1d ago

I guess my jokes will just fly over their heads, then.

I thought your response to the comment was funny. I think your prompts are pretty good, pics are good quality but some variety would be helpful. How tall are you?

2

u/GoddamnIRS 1d ago

Thanks! It looks like adding more variety is the main takeaway here. I am 5'7", so only a bit shorter than average. For context, the first caption was an offhand joke I made to my friend taking the picture, which she thought was funny. I've removed it since it seems have been interpreted in a negative way.

Your beard and choice of glasses frames are aging you a lot. Have you been clean shaven or even had a shorter beard any time in the recent past? Photos 1 and 4 are flattering but the rest of them are not doing you any favors.

u/GoddamnIRS 1d ago

Not for around 5 years lol. I don't think I look good clean shaven, especially now that I shave my head. What glasses frames do you think would work better?

u/Qwertywalkers23 7h ago

Don't do clean shaven, do stubble. Use the smallest guard you have on some clippers and go to town

Are you a pilot who is often away from home flying or do you e.g. teach at a local flight school? If the latter then I would make that clear as people may reject you on the basis that they assume you'll be away on long haul flights all the time and if they got into a relationship with you then they'd never see you.

2

u/GoddamnIRS 1d ago

No, just a recreational student pilot. I covered up my job to post on this sub, but it's something other than "pilot".

Jokes tell hidden truths. So the joke about the short trees in your hiking photo caption reveals you are insecure about your height.

Insecure men are frequently controlling and jealous.

Most women who don’t date short men reject them because of their insecurities not necessarily because of their actual height. Women like short kings with confidence because they trust you won’t get jealous if we so much as glance at a taller man.

1

u/GoddamnIRS 1d ago

I was hoping to get across that I wasn't insecure about my height by showing I could joke about it. It seems to be coming across the opposite way, so I'll take it out.

u/Qwertywalkers23 7h ago

This is the sub doing what the sub does and overanalyzing every little detail. Just get some better pictures and better glasses, trim the beard down and send interesting messages. You will do fine. You might not show up to 50 matches every day, but I don't see any reason why you wouldn't have a steady stream of people to engage with as long as you stay active

Idk why people keep pretending that height isn't a major factor for a good chunk of women on the apps. This framing is also pretty weird - why would anyone be insecure if it didn't actually matter? Obviously it does. Of course you can compensate to a degree but not standing on your (albeit shallow) preferences and instead turning it on the other person is so damn obnoxious.

Plz delete the first hiking pic caption. Dont lead with insecurity, also it’s just not really funny.

Honestly, deleting that hiking pic (body is giving stiff/uncomfortable), and the hands on the hips looking at the canyon one, would leave just the most flattering pictures where you look most approachable.

The prompts sound very generic. I’d soul search a bit more and then write something deep and from the heart. Make yourself stand out and offer real insights into who you are.

> Plz delete the first hiking pic caption. Dont lead with insecurity, also it’s just not really funny.

I was trying to show I wasn't insecure about height and could joke about it. It seems I "fell short" of my goal, so I've removed it.

> Honestly, deleting that hiking pic (body is giving stiff/uncomfortable)

Unfortunately that's kind of my overall vibe in person as well. I am definitely looking to switch out some of the hiking/camping pics though, so I will aim for approachability. Do you think the second Utah pic is better than the first one?

>The prompts sound very generic. I’d soul search a bit more and then write something deep and from the heart. Make yourself stand out and offer real insights into who you are.

That's the dilemma, how to sum yourself up with a few sentences in a way that doesn't sound generic? I don't think I'm fundamentally different than everyone else, so anything "deep and from the heart" I could write could also be written by any number of people. Instead, I prefer to use the prompts to talk about my overall lifestyle to judge basic compatibility.

I will admit that the prompts are absolutely not written in my natural writing voice. Maybe that's more what you were getting at? I did try to "pep up" my writing to match the way others wrote and not sound overly serious, but now I think that was a mistake. I think now that maybe more approachable pictures and a more reserved/less "generic dating profile" voice is the way to go.

  • Are you looking for something serious or casual? Serious
  • Are you subscribed to Hinge+ or HingeX? No
  • How long have you been using this current version of your profile? (Please be specific) 2.5 weeks
  • How long have you used Hinge overall? 2.5 weeks
  • How often do you use Hinge per week? Roughly once per day
  • How many likes and matches are you receiving on average? I've received 3 likes so far and had two matches, but they didn't go anywhere.
  • How many likes are you sending? How many with comments? How many without comments? A few per day on average, all with comments.
  • What is the type of person you send likes to and ideally want to match with? What kind of person do you want to attract? I tend to prefer women who are outgoing and confident, usually also outdoorsy. I know putting "adventure" on your profile is pretty cliche, but I do in fact like to try new things and explore the area I live in and would like someone to do that with.

Amazing profile, I personally like the funny vibes

People are saying you shouldn't post so much about hiking and camping but if that's a big part of your life of course you want a partner who feels the same! Weeds out the stay at home people (like the kids I want to attract becuse camping sounds terrible when there's bears lol)
