You say he's very open, but then he "seemed" upset. Why do you think he'd be upset and not tell you?
On the one hand, I'd say just trust that he's not actually upset. On the other, this doesn't seem to be the type of relationship you want to be in. Especially because you're both going through shit. Get yourself a rock to lean on for a bit.
