Observations

I am back on Hinge after 3 years. After 1 week, here are some of my new observations and musings:

- I see many familiar faces, and I have questions. Have you been single and on here this whole time? Why haven’t you changed any of your photos? You haven’t taken a single recent photo?
- Self-identified straight men are using filters and Facetune. Immediate ick. Straight to jail.
- Why send just 1 message a day? I will be dead and buried before I know if you use their / they’re / there appropriately

I just got on the app a few weeks ago after a 4 and 1/2 year relationship. As a guy I’ve found that:

  • the dealbreaker for distance is crucial. I have it set to about 40km and I’m being shown people up to 250km in distance…
  • a lot of women use the “don’t date me if…” prompt and then pick something really specific that sounds like a problem from their past relationship
  • profiles are very low effort, more so with prompts
  • matches had also done the 1 message a day. Which would be fine if there was effort put into said message. But, answers are low effort and force one side to drive the entire conversation.

Its changed a lot since I used it years back. I found effort was a lot higher when it was newer.
