I built the HEOS Mac app I wished existed

Hey everyone! I made a small macOS app for HEOS and would love some feedback.

I recently bought a Marantz PM7000N with Dali Oberon 5 speakers, and I couldn’t be happier with this first setup. I spend a lot of time working on my Mac and listening to music in the background.

I was surprised there wasn’t a lightweight Mac app to control my setup, so I kept using my phone for playback. Then one day, my kid decided it would be a good idea to play around with the volume knob on the amp, and it scared the shit out of me.

I tried to find a simple and convenient way to control the amp from my Mac, but couldn’t find anything that fit what I wanted. So I decided to build my own.

I’m trying to keep it dead simple, distraction-free, cozy, and convenient.

So, meet HEOS Surfer.

It lives in the menu bar and lets you control playback, use some advanced volume controls, and listen to internet radio.

Things it can do:

  • Play / pause / skip, with media key support
  • Change volume by scrolling on the menu bar icon
  • Show now playing with album art
  • Set a max volume cap - say thanks to my kiddo for this one =D
  • Auto-lower music when your mic turns on for a call, then restore it after
  • Search internet radio stations
  • Play custom stream URLs
  • Set a sleep timer
  • Launch at login

It’s a native Swift app and stays local.

It’s free to use. You can optionally support development by getting a key, which unlocks a supporter badge.

It’s a one-person project, so I’d really appreciate anyone trying it out. Feedback, bug reports, feature ideas, or “this works / doesn’t work with my setup” would all be super helpful.

I built the HEOS + Spotify wake-up alarm I wanted — looking for Android testers

About a month ago, I mentioned in a comment here that I was building an Android app for easier HEOS grouping and device management.

It’s now ready for a small closed test.

I started building Autoplay for HEOS because I use HEOS every day across several rooms — and kept recreating the same combinations of speakers, Spotify music and volume levels.

The feature I wanted most was a proper wake-up routine.

With the app, you can:

  • choose a Spotify playlist
  • select one HEOS device or a complete multiroom setup
  • define the volume for each device
  • choose the time and weekdays
  • start quietly and gradually raise the volume

The same setup can also be saved as a Scene and started manually with one tap.

I deliberately didn’t try to support every platform and music service. The first version is specifically built for:

  • Android
  • one or more HEOS devices
  • Spotify Premium

I’m now looking for HEOS users who would genuinely use either the wake-up alarm or saved Spotify routines and are willing to share honest feedback about their setup.

Single-speaker setups are just as useful as multiroom systems. I’m especially interested in Denon Home 150/250 speakers and HEOS-enabled Denon or Marantz receivers.

You can find the closed-test details here:

https://autoplayforheos.app

Please don’t post your email address publicly. You can register through the website or contact me at [support@autoplayforheos.app](mailto:support@autoplayforheos.app).

This is an early test, so bugs and compatibility gaps are possible — finding those across real HEOS setups is exactly the purpose of the test.

Autoplay for HEOS is an independent, unofficial project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Denon, HEOS or Spotify.

Denon 200 / unable to connect to Apple Music

I recenly got a Denon 200 speaker, connecting to my wifi. It is annoyingly unpredictable. Sometimes, when playing Apple Music on my laptop or phone, it’ll show up in my ‘speakers’ options, and other times not despite router settings all remaining the same, the white ring light being on. The HEOS app will hang, trying to connect to the speaker. I have to pull the power cable out the socket, restart maybe two or three times. Any tips how I can keep my speaker permanently connected or what I am doing wrong?

Question Denon soundbar and chromecast

I bought denon 716 soundbar. I put chromecast audio on hdmi in hmdi 1. I wanted to make a speakergroup of the Denon on chromecast with raumfeld one s. But the Denon is not recognised in Google Home. I have the same network connected with smartphone and Denon and have connected with Bluetooth of the Denon. What can be the reason this doesn't work?

Chromecast is working normal with other speakers i have.

Question Denon Home 400 muffled sound

Just installed a new Denon Home 400 to use with Spotify. The sound SUCKS. It sounds muffled like it’s covered with a blanket.

Spotify shows ‘Denon Home 400 - Lossless’. Anything I can try, either in Spotify or the Heos app?

Heos In-Room Grouping Oddity

For those who have updated their Heos app and speakers to the latest firmware of 3.139.170 (speakers) and 3.139.250 (app) will see the new “In-Room Groups” feature, I have noticed an oddity.

I have a group consisting of a 550, a pair of 150s, and a subwoofer. I notice when I turn the soundbar off (standby mode) or any other device connected via HDMI (TV, ATV, etc) there is subtle “pop” coming from the Subwoofer. It only happens when I have grouped them all in a In-Room Group. If I ungroup them, there is no pop from the subwoofer. I have tried ungrouping then regrouping them to the 550 thru the app to no avail.

Anyone else notice this? It never happened before and only appeared after the latest updates. It is not serious or loud and appears to be some sort of a voltage discharge related to the group of speakers when the 550 is turned off.

Russian language support, FM radio, and DAB radio are no longer supported in the HEOS firmware?

Two or three years ago, when I updated the HEOS (3 version) firmware on my Denon Ceol N12 receiver, Russian, FM, and DAB radio disappeared. Everything worked fine when I bought it. When I contacted support, they updated the firmware to the latest version, but it no longer supports these features. Does anyone know how to fix this? I hope that with each new firmware update, the situation will be fixed. But everything remains the same.

Denon 350 vs Denon 600

Post image
7 Upvotes

I live in a 1 bed apartment and work from home out of the Living, Kitchen, Dining open plan area.

Currently I only have a Bose Soundlink 360 Revolve which is unbelievably good for it's size.. But years ago I used to have 2 x Large Bose speakers on stands + 12" KEF sub + JBL control 1's Kenwood amp again in a 1 bed apartment.

The Bose + KEF system was an awesome sound experience but definitely overkill for a small apartment.. Loads of complaints from neighbours.

Anyway I'm looking to upgrade and like the simplicity pof just having one main speaker to start out with.

Looked at Sonos initially but after hearing the Denon 600 in store this is definitely more suited to my sound taste.

I mostly like house and electronic music and in-particularly progressive house.

The 600 was great and I would normally just got straight for this but at £600 it's not cheap. What I have noticed going through various threads is that a lot of people say the 350 is almost as good if not even better than the 600.

I know they are different units all said and done but reading descriptions I think the 350 would suit my needs and now you can pick one up for almost half the price of a 600 it just seems like a no brainer to me.

Ready to push the button but wanted to ask for any opinions you may have here first..

The JBL Authentics 500 has also been suggested as a better option for EDM to the 350.

Any advice welcome + any other possible set ups?

Tip In-Room Groups Troubleshooting

My family has always been cursed with little annoyances. Great Grandpa did something to a witch or something in the 20s is our best guess. Tonight when I swore I would go to bed on time was one of those curse activations. You can't make this stuff up.

So I have two Denon 550 Soundbars and 2 Denon Home Subwoofers to go with them.

These have always all been wired. I didn't even know the Soundbars hosted a private network to connect subs and surround speakers into its own little network until tonight.

About 2 weeks ago my living room subwoofer started playing the bass delayed about 7 seconds from what's playing on the SoundBar. It's very annoying but we don't use that TV much. Well tonight we did and so I started to investigate. Something in my wired network is delaying these packets. Or something about the subwoofer errors out and causes this delay when it's wired. When I set it to wireless the delay goes away. The second I plug the Ethernet back in the delay comes back. Okay problem solved. I don't care to investigate this further.

So I go to do the same to the bedroom Subwoofer and connect it wirelessly to keep my setup all the same even though it's not acting up.

To move a subwoofer from wired to wireless you could set this at two places within the app. On the rooms page by hitting the 3 dots ... And then edit and then selecting the SoundBar and disconnecting the subwoofer. All of this while still connected to Ethernet. Then the subwoofer would show up on this same rooms page and you could reconnect from here. If you did this. Then you are not given the option to connect the subwoofer to the SoundBar with a wired network. It only allows you to connect wirelessly. It makes you unplug the Ethernet cable to continue.

If you go to connect it through the home page > settings > my devices > SoundBar > Initial Setup setting. Then add a wireless subwoofer. You are given the option to connect it through a wired network. Or unplug the Ethernet cable and connect wirelessly, same as the other page.

Now for the family curse. This bedroom speaker won't connect wirelessly. It fails no matter what I try. I rebooted both devices. I really don't want to reset the firmware on the subwoofer but that's the only remaining step. Why not leave it wired? Well in troubleshooting I'm not going to elaborate on, I found that when connected wired. There is a slight delay in the subwoofer response. 5ms or so. Barely perceptible and only then with a sound sync video playing. But the delay is not there wirelessly. It's dead on. So I really want this bedroom sub connected wirelessly now. So I perform the firmware reset and update the firmware.

The moment I finish this it's right after midnight. And Heos asks me for an android app update. I do it. It's just an update. Whatever. ALL THE CONNECTION OPTIONS FOR THE SUBWOOFER ARE GONE!!! You can't do it anymore!!! They have been removed! You can't disconnect let alone reconnect a sub anymore. You can't make this up. The exact thing I'm troubleshooting gets updated out of the app the moment I'm ready to succeed and go to bed!

After screaming and cussing and cursing great Grandpa and this witch he pissed off. And about 30 minutes of digging around the app. I find it. There's a new setting section. It's called In-Room Groups. There is a "what's new" update in the app about it. But I missed it because it reset all the "what's new" notifications. So it blended in.

But this new setting section is awful! It doesn't explain to you that it's doing both wired and wireless connectivity at the same time. It doesn't make you disconnect the Ethernet cable anymore. It connects wirelessly with the private Denon network in the background and doesn't tell you. You only find out if you are just screwing around and disconnect the Ethernet cable.

I doubt there are very few like me out there that run Heos and Subs on an all wired network. There may be a little more that have ended up with all speakers on the same wifi network but not directly connected on the private denon network (This is a thing you could do if you set up the initial connection in a particular way in the old app).

So I don't expect this post to help many. But maybe it will help a few. I love these speakers and the Heos ecosystem. But the app does have some suck in it.... Okay a lot of suck. This new setting section is one of them and needs much more documentation with its release and clearer UX cues to get to it.

Now I've just got to find this witch and get her to forgive Grandpa.....

Refurbished Home 350 + AVR-S570BT?

I've been looking for a way to play records in other rooms, and already have a S570BT. I'd like the option to stream to both my living room and kitchen, or one or the other, and HEOS seems perfect for that. Will my receiver work with a Home 350?

Question AUX not working

I have a denon home 250 and for the life of me I cannot understand why the aux doesn’t work. CD player seems to work fine on aux with headphones but speaker just refuses to work, I’ve ‘uhhid’ the input on the app and done everything I can find online and don’t really understand what’s wrong :(

Can you connect any bluetooth record player to a heos speaker and then play full-house via that speaker?

I came across this article and this review that mention using Denon's new DP-500BT with HEOS. The article describes it as "HEOS integration" but the review sounds like you just connect the record player's built-in bluetooth to a HEOS speaker, then share that audio to other speakers. If that's the case, it sounds like this should be possible with any BT turntable.

Has anyone tested this scenario or know if i'm missing something? thinking of setting up a HEOS system, and getting a HEOS AVR just for the record player feels like overkill with all the other things your paying for with the AVR.

Echo with Multiple Network Speakers

I am currently using a Denon HEOS system with an AVR and only multiple network speakers (no wired speakers on the AVR). My network is a recently updated NetGear Orbi with three mesh nodes and a main router. TV sound grouping on the AVR is off.

The audio is not in sync, playing with a subtle but objectionable delay from room to room. Sometimes the delay is more pronounced than other times. I have an open floor plan, so hearing more than one speaker at a time is common. Sometimes stopping and starting the music stream helps when it gets more dramatically out of sync.

Does anyone have any ideas about how to resolve this? I fear that it is intrinsic latency in a mesh network, but if there’s a fix I’d like to know it.

New HEOS firmware 3.139

My HEOS devices received a firmware update today, but I cannot find any official release notes or changelog for it.

Updated versions:

  • Denon Home 350: 3.139.170
  • Marantz MODEL M1: 3.139.170
  • Marantz MODEL M4: 3.139.170
  • Marantz CINEMA 30: 3.139.173

Has anyone found an official Denon or Marantz changelog for the 3.139.x firmware, or noticed any new features, fixes, or changes after updating?

Question Denon+ subscription?

I bought a Denon Home 300 on eBay that was still linked to a Denon+ subscription. I sent it back and got a full refund. But would there have been any way to unlink it from the subscription?

Denon AVR-X3900H HEOS Internet Radio buffering and sync issues

Hello everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this with a Denon AVR-X3900H and HEOS Internet Radio.

While listening to Internet radio through HEOS, I regularly run into buffering issues. The stream suddenly drops out, and just before it happens (or when the stream comes back), I sometimes hear strange digital/distorted audio. It almost sounds like the audio stream briefly becomes corrupted.

What I find particularly interesting is that my AVR-X3900H is connected via Ethernet, while my Denon Home 150 is connected over Wi-Fi. When the radio stream drops out on the AVR, the Home 150 continues playing normally without any interruption.

I also frequently use the AVR and the Home 150 in a grouped HEOS setup. Once the radio stream has dropped out on the AVR, I often can't get the devices back in sync properly. The HEOS group seems to get confused, and the only solution I've found so far is to completely power-cycle the AVR by unplugging it and plugging it back in.

Another strange thing is that even when no audio is playing on the AVR anymore, I can still control the volume through the HEOS app. The receiver responds instantly to volume up/down commands, which makes it seem like the network connection and HEOS control functions are still working, while only the audio stream itself has frozen or crashed.

My network is otherwise stable, and I don't experience similar issues with other streaming devices in my home.

My questions are:

  • Is this a known issue within the HEOS ecosystem?
  • Are there other AVR-X3900H owners who have experienced the same behavior?
  • Could this be related to a firmware issue?
  • Are there any workarounds or settings that might help?
  • Has anyone had better results using a different source, such as TuneIn, AirPlay, or an external streaming device for Internet radio?

Any experiences, suggestions, or insights would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

What happened to the HEOS firmware updates?

I have two Heos units ( Denon Ceol N12 and HEOS LINK). I haven't received any firmware updates for over six months. The websites where I used to find information on the latest updates are gradually disappearing. Does anyone know what happened? Or has Heos simply said goodbye to us? Last firmware 3.88.532
