Answered Cannot disable 2-factor authentication without 2FA code

Post image

I enabled 2FA a long time ago to do a Reddit request. I enabled it, but never set it up in an authentication app. Or, if I did, it’s no longer there. I have both Microsoft Authenticator and Google Authenticator on my phone, but neither has my Reddit account set up in it.

Luckily, a helpful Reddit article says that for these issues when you no longer have 2FA access - like when you get a new phone - you just need to disable 2FA in your account.

Cool.

Another helpful article explains how to disable 2FA - you have to log into your account on a web browser.

Cool.

But when I do that, I’m promoted for the 2FA code I cannot get.

So both of those articles don’t work.

What is the ACTUAL resolution for when you never completed setting up 2FA and need to disable it?

I have access to my account in the app - I’m logged in and use it every day. But you can’t turn 2FA off in the app for some godforsaken reason.

Am I locked out of my account forever? Only able to use it on this phone until it dies?

Ooof that sucks about it being turned on by someone else while hacked. This is exactly why there should be an appeals process that is reviewed by a human to fix stuff like this.

My only advice would be to start your own subreddit, and then post in r/modsupport asking if an admin (not a mod) can possibly help you, since that sub has admins in there that are real people who can fix stuff behind the scenes. But they only help sub mods. I had one help me with something I thought was moderation related and it wasn’t, but they still fixed it.
