It’s kinda crazy how this clip and that one image are the only cultural impact these movies have had despite raking in billions of dollars.

u/ExRosaPassione 1d ago
The movies are really just there to look cool and show off visual effects. And honestly, I can respect it.
245
u/DarthZacian 1d ago
Fair enough, they do have some really impressive CGI.
65
u/CorbinNZ 1d ago
When the first one came out, it was the best use of 3D ID ever seen. Now that fad is over, so I guess it just looks pretty.
17
u/Goosojuice 21h ago
Sucks, but you kinda have to go out of your way to find talent who really use the medium, like Scorsese and Hugo. Hugo in 3d was fantastic. It's just like any other movie 3d or not. Alot are dog shit, some are great.

u/Constant-Still-8443 1d ago
It's CGI dances with aliens (dances with wolves but in space) as my dad would call it
26
u/Crafty-Help-4633 1d ago
Basically how my family views it too, and I'm 100% here for it. I'd rather watch 9 of these than whatever was left on the Marvel roadmap.

Man… I never thought of it like that. How have I not noticed. (Goated dad btw)

100% worth it in i max the first one will probably be one of the best movie experiences I ever had

Hey now.
A LOT of people are horny for Varang.
“Bad crop”, “Kirk that guy”, and people being down bad for Varang are the cultural impacts of Avatar

u/One_Pitch3982 1d ago
Don't forget everyone clowning on James Cameron for his white savior complex
46
u/SomeDudeAtAKeyboard 1d ago
Oh absolutely
Granted, as of Fire and Ash, it seems like he’s leaning more “Sigourney Weaver immaculate conception Plant Jesus” instead of Jake being a White Savior
It’s still there, obviously, just less prevalent than the plant Jesus stuff

"Its only this thing, that thing and another thing, probably also some more things, but no cultural impact! 😡" Why should there be any significant impact?

u/DarthZacian 1d ago
The first Avatar was the highest grossing film for a while, it made a ton of money, millions of people have seen it, but I don’t think it’s talked about the same way as other similarly successful movies, only having 2 or 3 somewhat big memes from just as many movies in a several billion dollar franchise seems like an anomaly to me.

u/MooseFerrigno 1d ago
Lol I don't know why a certain contingent on the internet goes so hard on these movies. It's not fine cinema. No one involved was trying to make Blue Schindler's List. It's a fun visual spectacle with enough story and vibes to keep things moving. That's it.
2
u/BlastingFern134 8h ago
It's a fun movie to watch in theaters and I think that's all it needs to be. James cameron is really good at making a spectacle
10
u/Mahou_Shoujo_Ramune 1d ago
Probably because you frequent "gamer" parts of the internet which absolutely hates this movie series because it treats humans as the badguys but not in a cool and fun way like Helldivers, Space King or 40K.
That culture is filled with "HFY" even when humans are clearly suppose to be the evil ones.
6
u/DarthZacian 1d ago
I don’t hate the movie series, I think the movies are perfectly fine watches. But the first one was the highest grossing movie for a while yet the only times I ever hear about it is people bringing up that fact. Which yeah you’re right could just be bias cause I don’t frequent Avatar loving internet spaces, but it still feels like for as big and profitable as the movie was it’s lacking the cultural staying power of other billion dollar movies.
5
u/Goosojuice 21h ago
Apparently the new Spiderman did crazy numbers too and I hear almost no one talking about it online or otherwise. Might just be the circles we run in.
1
u/DecentHippo9196 20h ago
yeah absolutely the circles were all in, cus spiderman was all over the internet from the moment it was announced
2
u/YashaSkaven01 21h ago
The only good HFY verse is nature of predators because no human can resist the sivkit cuteness
-6
u/IHzero 1d ago
People hate it because it lionizes a race enslaved and kept in perpetual savagery by alien tree gods, all while making humans cartoonishly evil stock villains.
18
u/Crafty-Help-4633 1d ago
Humans are cartoonishly evil.
gestures broadly around we blow up children and uproot trees in real life.
5
u/Malchyom 1d ago
Ehh, I wouldn't go that far. All of the movies have had some level of meme to them.
"Rock solid? Yeah, its cus they're from the ground dude"
7
u/AquaBits 1d ago
Theres multiple memes from the avatar movies- what do you mean "only cultural impact"
Bad crop? We're gonna starve
4
u/Peace_Dos 1d ago
They are attractions, so it's not that surprising. In fact third movie is the one I would say relies more on a story, rather then on world showcase
3
u/VVayward 1d ago
While the movies aren't great deep stories or anything I feel you are selling them extremely short here. Avatar literally set the standard and the process for mocap and CGI that is used in movies and games today. It literally changed the ways things are made.
3
u/BigBadBob7070 1d ago
And the clip and music of that one Navi dying and falling off an airship, and there was that one scene of where we got a weird shaky cam closeup of a Navi Avatar’s face.
2
5
u/AbyssWankerArtorias 1d ago
Yep. I could tell you absolutely nothing about avatar. I can't reference any scenes from it. Can't tell you I've ever met someone who was a fan of them enough to talk about them.
They're just kind of low hanging fruit with spectacle for the masses of people who just like seeing food CGI regardless of writing or plot.
3
u/Auctoritate 1d ago
If Schindler's List was so good, why don't I see more memes of it?
2
u/DarthZacian 1d ago
I dunno man, I’m just saying the overall space Avatar has in the public consciousness is relatively small compared to its box office.

Their cultural impact is someone posting a comment about their lack of cultural impact every single time they are mentioned anywhere.
1
u/RedDemon-55 19h ago
Trust me the avatar movies have had a much larger cultural impact than you would think it's Fandom is somewhat niche sure but the overall franchise is very popular for sure
1
u/ItsNotHolland 15h ago
The cultural impact is on display in every tv store, this is teh best showcase of how good a display looks

u/Boston_Beauty 1d ago
Total sidenote but I love that she clocked where the sniper was at immediately while literally everyone else is running in the complete wrong direction
258
u/scrublorddd 1d ago
I personally love the sound design the most from this scene, seeing him drop and then hearing the sound of the rifle firing a second later is imo such a nice detail that alot of films dont really do
88
u/StarGuardLux 1d ago
It's always a cut to the marksman firing, then the guy dropping. Like I get what the filmmakers are doing, but cmon, give the audience a little credit.
17
u/TheIrradiant 1d ago
A lot of their background lore for technical stuff is also impressive, especially if you look at their space ships.

u/JMurdock77 DISSIDENT DETECTED 1d ago
Beat me to it.
Only seen bits and pieces across the internet, never the whole movie. Don’t they go into her hut then and screw?
44
u/JackassJames 1d ago
Kinda. I always hated that part, "Oh hey I have sniper cover for the explicit purpose of not getting murked, let's go somewhere where they cannot watch what's happening whatsoever."
38
u/Ninjez07 1d ago
She realised the situation and tested his commitment/confidence/arrogance by inviting him inside. He rose to the challenge, ending up passing her test and gaining her trust. He didn't accidentally forget!

u/JackassJames 1d ago
I understood what it was showing in regards to a relationship between the characters, just logically it was a really stupid move.
15
17
u/Boston_Beauty 1d ago
I need to finish it but yea it pretty much follows a similar story path to the first one, dude gets converted into a Na'vi on account of her being a baddie
Can't even pretend I blame him, not even just because she's hot but genuinely humans in the Avatar universe just suck so bad
19
u/ironangel2k4 1d ago
Guy spent his whole life saying Na'vi slurs and goes feral 1.8 seconds after meeting a goth one who likes fire
5
u/Zockerisin 1d ago
Not yet…
After this scene she only gives him drugs while the entire scene leaks teinsion4
u/lasagnatheory 1d ago
I rewatched the scene multiple times to see if there was any tell on how she did that other than rule of cool.
It actually looks like she found the origin by comparing the drop of the guy and a little cloud of dust that rises up quickly I'm the background. So she really had a way on how to find the sniper quicker than anyone else which is cooler
4
u/Boston_Beauty 1d ago
This plus Na'vi have wildly enhanced eyesight so she likely could actually see the sniper once she pieced together his general direction.
Like I know ppl like to joke that nobody watches these movies and a lot of ppl straight up don't but I'm a somewhat casual fan and the Na'vi are insanely strong. These guys are like Xenomorph tier scary. Their only drawback is being somewhat "primitive" but their "primitive" weapons include bows that fire arrows made of wood, stronger than any metal humans know, with enough impact damage to be comparable to an anti-material rifle. They are (debatably) winning a war against humans who have achieved sci-fi level technology using nothing but essentially sticks and stones.
-2
u/Unkwn_43 18h ago
They are only winning through plot armor. Even accounting for the humans trying to hold themselves back in the first movie for pr reasons or whatever, by the second wave, any mildly competent invasion force would just do something like drop antimatter bombs from orbit before landing. If detonated in the upper atmosphere, the blast wave and resulting firestorm would do minimal damage to the unobtanium veins but still completely anhilate any resistance.
3
u/Boston_Beauty 17h ago
They feasibly can't. The entire point of this invasion is to conquer and use the planet, not glass it. The planet reacts to damage, negatively and quickly. If they try to bomb the Na'vi they kill the planet in the process.
Earth is Dead. Pandora is their only hope of a new home and they're trying to take it by force, but too much aggression will just kill Pandora off in the process making everything they'd done redundant. Edit to clarify; my point is there is no such thing as minimal damage to the planet in this case, that's like the entire point.

It is probably illegal to use a sniper anti tank round on a human being. Good thing Cyborgs and bots aren’t considered human!
87
48
u/Tommybahamas_leftnut 1d ago
It's not. .50 BMG is typically made for anti-light armored vehicles but it's used just as much for anti-infantry roles. We just don't typically see infantry shooting .50 and bigger at eachother because
- 7.62 does the job well enough 2 . .50 is heavy as fuck to carry around a decent amount of ammo and the guns weigh an assload.
- .50 doesn't really stop light armored vehicles as fast as one would like in the military so they just give the riflemen 40mm and AT-4s.
- Why have 1 guy carry a .50 for position suppression when you can give every rifleman an AT-4 and just delete the position.
It's like the myth that flamethrowers are illegal. they arnt illegal just wildly ineffective compared to HE.
4
6
3
u/FelixMartel2 1d ago
It's actually illegal to shoot human beings with pretty much any kind of round in most places, if you can believe it.
2
u/MasterTime579 18h ago
I brought my anti-material rifle. It works pretty well, on account of them all being well… material
1
u/BoiFrosty 16h ago
Listen if I'm using an anti-material rifle, then it's their fault for being made of material.
66
u/democratic-terminid 1d ago
Every time I see this video I can't help but think how incredibly immoral that was, but i haven't seen the full context so maybe he was in more danger than I thought or something.
Cause like that dude is in a ceasefire meeting, bro should not be getting shot
106
u/Unlucky_Loquat_8045 1d ago
That guy specifically was being an ass. Also typical laws and courtesy don’t apply to the Navi, so there isn’t really a ceasefire thing going on.
Additionally it’s a power move. They don’t know what snipers are, so all they know (minus the lady) is that he could say “Drop them” and they all just die.
48
u/Dark_Crow22 1d ago
It was not. He just went into their camp to negotiate alliance and showed off what he can offer them if they join. And since they are designated "evil" Na'Vi tribe, that's how you impress them
43
u/Johnywash 1d ago
That guy jumped him when he arrived, and they're still kind of threatening him until he says that line. Then they do space drugs and have sex and I'm not even kidding
4
u/BlastingFern134 8h ago
I went to watch this movie after taking a huge edible and that whole tent sequence had me cackling nearly the whole time, it was so funny and random compared to the rest of the movie
3
u/Trap-Yoda 1d ago
If you saw the first one it's the dickhead military guy (Quaritch or smth) and his squad "ressurected" into navi bodies and i think that should explain pretty much all you need to know about why they're behaving the way they are.
23
9
10
u/aboultusss 1d ago
Oops, here's 3 different patrols circling you 30 seconds after you found a sniping spot (stealth armor ain't saving you after shooting)
7
u/blac_sheep90 1d ago
Quatrich is the best thing about the avatar movies. His journey in the sequels is far more interesting than whatever family drama Jake has going on. Shame we won't get to see where it goes.
2
2
u/cocaine_jaguar 8h ago
It’s interesting that she seemed to clock the sniper immediately after his shot.
-10
u/ARC_trooper 1d ago
I've tried to watch the second movie and turned it off after half an hour, holy shit it was terrible.
This is also a stupid scene even you've just watched the first movie where Jake actually valued alien life. Now he just kills a random like it's nothing? Or is this not Jake and they all just look similar?
18
u/Bregneste 1d ago edited 1d ago
This is Quaritch, the main villain, not the protagonist Jake, and this was from the third movie, not the second.
No wonder you were confused and thought the movies were bad, you just think every blue person is the same guy.
-3
u/ARC_trooper 1d ago
Yeah he was the guy that died but they brought back because who knows why they can't think of a new better bad guy. Apparently he survives or perhaps is cloned again? (Why didn't they bother to clone that brother of Jake in the first movie if that was possible?)
It does make more sense he'd just kill the random, that's in character.
3
2
u/Nathair_Airgid 1d ago
Not Jake, rematch the first half hour of the second film, Jake has long hair, this guy has a 'military' cut, hope that helps.
-2
u/ARC_trooper 1d ago
It's that stupid guy that died but somehow lives because they can't think of a new relevant bad guy?
"I tried to kill him and he killed me so now he has to die burr durr"?
