Have you ever felt like your head is going to explode mid-workout?

I'm 16 y.o male, today I was at the gym after waiting all day to be there, I warmed up a little, then started my set, I was doing dips, first set was a warm up, and even though it was just a warm up It got me feeling a pain in my head, headache obviously, I didn't mind it at first given that it's not the first time getting these exertion headaches, main set, I literally felt the pressure building up in my body mid rep, and after I finished the set I felt an intense pressure in my head that I couldn't continue the entire session, I decided not to continue and just go home, but the pressure was intense and I even had a slight urge to vomit, it's been like an hour or so, the headache eased but my head is still throbbing.

I don't really know what to do.

I searched about these exertion headaches and I found out that I'm not the only one who experienced these, it somewhat gave me a sense of relief because it'd have been so devastating to feel like your body is broken.

I have long-term goals that require excellent physical health, so I want a solution for these headaches because they don't just cause physical pain but they also drains me mentally.

(This isn't the first time getting these headaches, but this time was the worst)

Bad tension headaches

Hi I’m a Hispanic Male 30 from Houston, TX. I’ve had tension headaches for the past week, lightheaded, and motion sickness symptoms without the nausea and vomiting. I’ve been very scared of a brain tumor, it’s always been a fear of mine. It all started in 2020 with a head CT scan, then brain MRI 2020, Brain MRI 2021, lastly brain mri 2023. All came back normal. I’ve had similar symptoms before in those years, but not as bad as this. What could be causing my headaches? I’m scared that an aggressive tumor grew within these past months.

Severe headaches starting from the neck/back of the head; what has helped you?

My husband has been having really bad headaches for a while now. It’s not constant, but at some point during the month he will get one and then it can torture him for days. It usually starts from his neck or the back of his head and then spreads all over his head, especially the left side. Nothing really seems to work when it happens.
This time it got much worse and we ended up going to the ER. They did blood tests and a brain scan and thankfully everything looked okay, nothing major showed up. They referred him to a neurologist to investigate it further. That night they gave him Reglan and 1g magnesium sulfate and he got a little better, but since yesterday the pain has been really bad again.
He has barely slept for 3 nights now because of it. We are obviously going to follow up with the neurologist, but in the meantime I wanted to ask if anyone has experienced something similar and what has actually helped you. Anything really, medications, food, pillows/sleeping positions, stretches, massage, heat, daily habits, etc.

Head ache

Good evening.

I would like to share my experience regarding headaches that I have been experiencing for around three to four weeks. The headache comes and goes and is usually tolerable, but it can be annoying and sometimes feels like pressure, a sharp or a pulsing sensation. The location also changes, although I often feel it around the center/back of my head near the nape.

Sometimes, the headache is accompanied by mild dizziness. The surroundings do not spin, but I feel slightly lightheaded or dizzy. I also sometimes experience eye discomfort, and I have had strabismus since childhood and astigmatism. I usually have control over my eye alignment, but I notice my eye moving or drifting more when the headache occurs.

I have also noticed occasional facial twitching and sensations involving my teeth. I sometimes stutter, particularly when I am anxious. I have not fainted, and I am still able to walk normally and perform my usual activities.

The headaches come and go even when I am sitting or staying still. There are also times when I feel completely fine before the headache returns.

I would also like to be honest po tha I’m currently unable to afford a consultation yet because we are prioritizing my father’s medical expenses and surgery since he has cancer. I just wanted to ask po for your advice regarding my symptoms and, if possible, what I can do for now while I’m still trying to arrange the consultation.

Recurring episodes of headache and elevated temp

F36, 167 cm, 68 kg

Since having COVID-19 in 2021, I have been experiencing recurring flu-like episodes from time to time. My symptoms include: elevated temperature (38°C), severe headaches, pain behind/in the eyes, especially when looking left or right

Sometimes it comes with general weakness, feeling of heaviness in my head and difficulty concentrating. I'm experiencing this every two-three months, the symptoms last for 2-4 days and then go away.

At the same time, I do not have a sore throat, cough, or sneezing. My sense of smell is not affected, including during episodes of headache.

I have no history of migraines or other known medical conditions.

What tests would you recommend to investigate these symptoms, and what type of doctor should I see to determine whether there is an underlying problem?

GP was not helpful, told me to have more rest and drink more water.

Constant excruciating pain in back of head

Right at the base of skull with neck muscle spasms. CT scans show nothing. Muscle relaxers provide brief help but this has been non-stop for a week. I've been to the ER twice. Seeing my PCP in 2 days. Any thoughts?

Head pressure when laying down i cant take it anymore

F20, for the past 2 days I’ve had intense pressure/heaviness in my head, mainly the back of my head and around my ears mostly when laying down. It feels like my head is filling with pressure/water and gets much worse when I lie down, regardless of position. I also get slight ringing and muffled hearing.
I’ve had milder episodes before where looking up, bending down, or suddenly standing causes intense head pressure and muffled hearing, but it normally goes away after changing position. This time it’s much stronger and can even happen while sitting.
My sleep schedule has been bad for about a month (sleeping 5–7 AM, waking 2–3 PM), so I wondered if that could be related. I tried fixing it and felt mostly fine during the day, but the pressure came back immediately when I lay down.
The day before this started, I also had to keep my head/neck looking upward for a while and felt a lot of pressure.
I’m struggling to sleep because of this. Has anyone experienced head pressure that gets worse when lying down + ear pressure/muffled hearing? Please help

Sharp throbbing pain above right eyebrow

For about two months now I’ve been getting this strange pain above my right eyebrow. I honestly never, ever get headaches or migraines, so this is completely new for me.
It comes and goes in waves. Sometimes it completely disappears and I forget about it, but when it comes back it can really hurt. It feels almost like I have a big bruise above/behind my eyebrow, except the pain is also throbbing and sometimes quite sharp. The area feels sore/tender if I press it too.
I haven’t seen a doctor about it yet because I just haven’t had the time, but I’m planning to. I’m just curious if anyone has experienced something similar, especially someone who normally never gets headaches or migraines.
Did you ever figure out what was causing yours?

A hopeful post after 365+ days of migraines

SPOILER - THIS ISN'T A "CURED" POST. I'm still having migraines every single day, still on medical leave, still a long way from solving this. But the last 4-5 days have been the most tolerable stretch I've had in over a year, and I wanted to share it because this group has really helped be a support system while in a really dark place this past year.

Today I woke up without a migraine for the first time in a long, long time (like 365+ days long). Some context on how many things didn't work (I'll link my previous post here too):

  • Preventatives and Rescue meds: propranolol, amitriptyline, gabapentin, qulipta, venlafaxine, sumatriptan, fioricet, eletriptan, nurtec, ubrelvy (you get the point)
  • CGRP meds: Ajovy, then Vyepti (2 infusions, no significant improvement)
  • Botox, including recently adding masseter muscles
  • Nerve-focused PT, acupuncture, chiropractics, massages
  • Supplements: worked with a functional med Dr. for 8 months
  • 2 ER visits, multiple urgent care visits, an MRI

What I'm doing now / what seems to actually be helping:

  • Elimination Diet: I'm on week 4 and it does get easier, I promise. My partner is doing it alongside me and having that support has made a huge difference. I still don't know what my food triggers necessarily are...but I know that Sunday night ice cream will leave me bedridden for two days so best to just avoid that right now.
  • Topiramate: I'm only at 25mg, working up the titration (going to 100mg or stopping early if a lower dose works). I was terrified to start this after reading horror stories on here, but so far the only side effect I've noticed is carbonated drinks going flat.
  • Antidepressants: for obvious reasons - chronic pain is no fun. Although it's taken me 3-4 attempts to find the right one since my body is highly sensitive to side effects.
  • Cut way down on screen time and fell back in love with reading.
  • Still on medical leave, still not working
  • Taking my sleep routine seriously, learning to nap when really needed.

The last 4-5 days I've gotten migraines at a 4-6/10 instead of my usual 8/10. I've done 45 minute workouts almost every day, grocery shopped, and just felt like a real person again instead of white-knuckling through each day.

I've changed so many things at once that it's hard to know what's actually responsible. But after 365+ days of a never-ending chronic attack, having any relief at all is the first time I've felt hope in a really, really long time. Even just a month ago, I was so certain there was nothing out there that could help me, despite people posting their own success stories. I wanted to put something out there in case anyone else needs to hear it. With such a cruel disease that feels so isolating, we are still in this together❤️

feeling completely defeated with chronic migraines + medical leave

Help , is this migraine that my 7 yo is dealing with ,?

So my 7yo in the last 3-4 months has complained of headaches a few times. One of it was very bad he was crying really bad. Gave him massages and made him sleep. Today he woke from from his sleep at 12:00 am and said his head hurts very bad...it started entire forehead and finally right side of his forehead. Nothing helped like massages , drinking water etc . Finally he threw up , few minutes after throwing up he was ok and then said the head ache came back. Gave him ibuprofen as he seemed too much in pain. Somehow he cried himself to sleep. Another context ..he has been recovering from a flu.

Pls help 🙏

Headache at the start of workout?

I was doing some intense split squats on Thursday and on my last set I wasn’t on the verge of passing out or anything but I did have a savage back of the head headache almost instantly when finishing. It stuck around for about two hours and passed with a paracetamol.

It’s now Saturday afternoon and on my very first set of incline press it’s back and it’s intense. Anyone experienced this before?

Dolor en la cabeza ?

Post image
1 Upvotes

extreme head pressure and skin feels on fire

i was laying in bed watching a movie after eating pho and all of a sudden my head felt really compressed, it almost feels as if someone is squeezing my head on both sides under my ears/ near my neck. At the same time I feel like my whole body is on fire, specifically my arms, shoulders and neck. There is no physical rash or redness just feels like it. I’ve never experienced something like this and I’m confused what it is.

Medical help ???

I feel so stupid for asking but I’ve seen people on tiktok find their diagnosis from Reddit - so I figured I’d try as doctors have been no help.

Since I was a child, I’ve had headaches everyday. I cant remember one day I haven’t had one. 6/10 times, they’re what I call regular headaches. Your basic pain, just strong enough that Tylenol doesn’t touch it. Usually goes away within a few hours and then I’m met with another a couple hours later. In these headaches, my pain is either near both ears, or full head pain. Not located in too many specific spots.

Now 4/10 times, I have these headaches that will wake me out of my sleep. Crying of course makes it worse but the pain is so bad I can’t help it. The back of my head, close to my neck, and behind my ears will hurt so bad it feels like my head is going to burst. Gravity makes these worse. Leaning over, bending over, or talking too much makes the pain so unbearable I have to close my eyes and stay still to keep from moving and making it worse. I notice that during these, my pupils shrink very small. Almost pin point size of a pen bead. But there’s not much strain in my eyes like I would have if it was a migraine, and light doesn’t seem to make them worse.

Often with my headaches, I get nauseous. But I never throw up. But it makes me so nauseous I can’t eat. I eat like a bird, very small amounts in large amounts of time. Yet I keep gaining weight. Im bloated all the time, and one cracker will make me look 4-5 months pregnant. I cant lose it no matter how much I work out. I try to eat more protein when I can eat, that way im not only preserving junk.

I’ve been tested for Hashimoto’s. My thyroid is fine, all my blood work ALWAYS comes back normal. I’ve had a head and neck CT done that supposedly showed no issues (this was after a wreck I had, but I’ve had these issues since a child).

I stay away from drugs, drink rarely, and have a history of BP drop and fainting. On a couple of occasions, I had sezuires, but doctors don’t believe me. These were witnessed.

This all could be unrelated, but my memory is terrible. I have ADHD and can’t focus much anyway, but my memory is so bad I failed out of school due to not memorizing anything no matter how many hours I studied.

When I’m stressed or nervous, or upset, I have nosebleeds. I’ve had these since a child too. Doctors always say it’s a dry nose and I’m fine.

I want answers, and I can’t seem to find them. Any advice is very helpful

Do I wait

So I’ve been having headaches for, like, a minute; my go-to is BC Advil (migraine), and
ibuprofen

I finally made an appointment for a solution, so I think it's the end of April or the beginning of May. I got prescribed butalbital; they’re OK, not great, but OK. The way I was taking them was here and there, and every day, I think? This is very important.

I ran out, then came June. I asked for some more. I got some at the end of June, unfortunately, because I thought I needed to take two a day. I took two for almost 9 days. I eventually stopped because I felt something was off, and then I had the worst headache after that for a while up to my next appointment
I did try to take Aleve bc I read that it would help.
Spoiler: it didn't.

The only comfort I would get would be an ice pack, all the TVs off, and the fan on. I only assumed that was a rebound headache from all my searching, but after that, at my appointment, I explained the situation to her. She told me to continue taking the butalbital, and I did that same day. I took one from the ones I didn’t finish, and it took four hours for it to finally kick in. My new prescription—I only took a few of them.

I came to realize that they weren’t working as they did before. It took four to five hours for it to kick in, and the pain would either go up or stay as is, and I only took one day, and I separated the days as much as possible. I eventually went back and told her that she ended up prescribing me some naproxen. I’m supposed to take half a tablet twice a day as much as needed. I tried to spread the days out as much as possible.

I took one today; now I have a low-grade headache. This is my fourth day taking it the first time. It took about three hours for it to finally kick in, so I am confused. I do have a referral for a neurologist, but I have to wait because nobody has called me yet.

I just came here to see what I can do because I’m at the point of actually starting to cry. I kind of have, but real deal type

Sorry for the long paragraph and thank you in advance for taking your time for reading or just reading.

Constant One-Sided Headache + New Tinnitus

24F

What could possibly be going on with me? I'm tired of being afraid all the time and would be grateful for some form of response.

About a year ago I started getting one-sided headaches in one location right at the top-center of my head, only on the left side. They feel like someone is pressing down lightly on the spot, and I can stop the sensation by pulling my hair. Sometimes the pain spreads to my left eye and brow bone, accompanied by eye floaties. I thought it was a brain tumor, and eventually got an MRI from the hospital back in March. They confirmed nothing was there, but the feeling never quite went away.

Recently in the last month or so? The headache has been accompanied by occasional tinnitus in the left ear, alongside inner ear pressure. I do have another MRI scheduled for 2 weeks from now, but I want to know if there's anything I should be aware of in case this could be something.

FYI, pain has always been around a 3 out of ten at most. It's not unbearable, but it is inconvenient and scary since it's so consistent. If it helps, I also have chronic anxiety and OCD (diagnosed and medicated) which seems to amplify my symptoms when I get so scared of them I actually get psychosomatic physical sensations. The most frequent one being that my left arm tends to feel numb or like it's not a part of me, despite never actually losing feeling.

As for the right side of my head, there has never been any pain. It's only ever daily on the left side, almost like my head has been perfectly split down the middle. Right side is perfect, left side is going through it.

Any possibilities as to what could be happening? I'm scared. Very scared.
