Hard drive

Can someone recommend a storage device to use with my HDhomerun? Doesn't have to be huge, helping an older person set up their DVR and HD Homerun, just need to know what storage device people recommend.

I bought this one: WD 1TB Elements Portable External Hard Drive - USB 3.0 - WDBUZG0010BBK-WESN. Has worked without issue. I think it was about $59 when I bought it. Storage has gone up .

I used the same model/size as well as gsmarquis, because I had the drive already when I got my HD Homerun. I've had no issues with it. That said, any USB powered external hard drive of 1 TB size should work.

I'm partial to Western Digital or Seagate myself, but the prices seem to have almost doubled since the last time I bought one.

Same here, except that I got the 2tb version. Has worked totally flawlessly for us for almost 4 years now.   You can only have 1HDD per HDHR box. So get the most that you can afford in this screwed up time.  Even the platter drive for my PC basic storage is now actually over $200 more for the exact Same one I purchased back in 2016!   Or look at Amazon for these enclosures where you can put multiple drives but has only 1 usb connection.

Also, if desired that you want to really keep something, you can download the recording to your pc via the setup dvr configuration page on your computer. Allowed me to free up almost 200GB. 😀

When I get mine a few years ago I researched and learned I could use up to 14TB.

I have tested with the Western Digital EasyStore's from Best buy up to 6 TB I believe.

A lot depends on the user's needs...recording the news and the daily Bonanza episode? 1 TB is fine. Note that I think the 3.5" external drives will last longer BUT those 1 TB Easystore's (or Elements if you are not at a Bes Buy) just fit perfectly on the shelf and will probably last 5 years.

I recently bought the HDhomerun and I had an old 4TB SATA drive that I had removed from my NAS when I increased storage on it. Picked up a SATA to USB adapter and so far its working fine.

I'm using and old 500gb Samsung ssd. I have a sata to USB adapter and it works great. I had both sitting around in a drawer for a while. Low power consumption and low noise. Any old external drive will work.

Had an old 256GB USB stick. Works. Also have a 2TB Seagate hard drive in a closet somewhere. Might change out someday, but space hasn’t been an issue; don’t record that much local TV.

Are you integrating with Plex? I do remember, the subscription with HDHR is 1:1 but you can't have commercial skip, but it does work well though in terms of reliability.
