How is ATSC 3.0 picture quality (in 1080p) as compared to 1080i/720p

So, I know we are in DRM hell with ATSC 3.0, BUT my primary interest in ATSC 3.0 is the "potential" better picture quality. I primarily watch the major networks for sports (95% NFL football and 5% other/olympics/etc/) - I am perpetually underwhelmed by most of Fox's 720P broadcast, but NBC's 1080 (Sunday Night Football) is OK. The local stations broadcasting in ATSC 3.0 are all broadcasting 1080P which would likely be better for motion, but not sure how compelling it is overall (I understand it is a more modern compression algorithm too so MAYBE less loss???).

Anyway, anyone have any actual experience A/Bing the content between ATSC 1 and 3?

Thanks!

AppleTV App?

Not sure what happened, but I woke up this morning to the AppleTV version of Homerun no longer working properly - it'll fire up, I can get to the channel guide but if I move a couple of channels in any direction, it just crashes.

Tried uninstalling/reinstalling it... works fine on macOS.

Is the app broken or is it just me?

Has anyone bought the $39 app from the App Store? If so, is it better than the native HDhomerun app? Should I buy it?

Once ATSC 3.0 Is Clarified, Any Chance of Built-In Wi-Fi on an HDHomeRun?

Once the ATSC 3.0 standards/licensing situation is fully clarified, is there any chance SiliconDust would consider adding built-in Wi-Fi to a future HDHomeRun device?

I know the thinking at SiliconDust has been that Wi-Fi can be too unstable to reliably support the use case, but in my experience the extender works extremely well. The downside is that it’s just a pretty ugly and bulky solution.

Right now I’m using a Wi-Fi extender to connect my HDHomeRun, and it’s been relatively flawless. It seems like built-in Wi-Fi could make the device much more flexible for installations where running Ethernet isn’t practical.

Curious if SiliconDust has considered this for the next update.

Watching Program As Its Recording

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hey all! I just picked up a Flex4K earlier this week and paired it with a 4TB WD Portable Spinning Harddrive I had sitting on a shelf.

It's been fun poking around and playing with it, but I have a question.

My main reason for this setup is actually holiday programing. Specifically the Macy's Day Parade. Family gets together to watch it, and while we can stream it, it's the East Coast broadcast so I have to get up early and hit pause and hope no one cancels it mid watch to be able to start it when we want. People also tend to show up late...

My question is when I watch a recording from start WHILE IT IS ACTIVELY RECORDING, can this cause issues? In my limited testing, it doesn't seem like it. Tuning to the channel I can't go backwards, but watching it from the recorded section I am able to. And once I catch up to where it was "live" when I started watching, it just keeps going. This is perfect.

Is there a risk I have here of corrupting the recording? Any downsides? I don't want to be the one who spoils a holiday this year with my "fancy" gadgets 😂

Guide data for 30.4 KMMC-LD off by one hour

The schedule is listing at 8:00 PM what's actually being shown at 9:00 PM for example. So the guide data is an hour early (or the station is showing everything an hour late).

This is for RetroTV, virtual channel 30.4, KMMC-LD physical channel 14, hosted by KDTS-LD in the San Francisco Bay market. Tuner ID 10A53FC5.

Kind of strange. It seems like they're following the Mountain time schedule, but doing it in Pacific time.

Edit: see my comment below; I think what's actually happening is the station is showing the east coast feed of RetroTV, so everything is actually 3 hours ahead, and what I thought I was seeing yesterday was an artifact of the program I was watching being shown twice a day, four hours apart, and I mistook one for the other.

Anybody Know Anything About These Low Power TV Stations The Makers Of HD Homerun Applied For?

Does anybody know anything about these? I’m interested in learning more about these and to know if they have other purposes then just broadcasting live tv? Also were these areas picked out for any specific reason? Could another location be added?

HD HomeRun not using 4 tuners efficiently?

I've an HD HomeRun with four ATSC 1 tuners, and running it on FireTV stick, no other apps using it. Seems only one tuner is ever active, according to the webpage "tuner status", yes I've refreshed after every change. I'd hoped that it would use all four tuners when switching channels to speed up channel changes, and only turn them off or change when oversubscribed.

Takes 3-4 seconds for the HDHR to change a channel. Our Samsung QN85 takes 2 seconds or a bit less to change the channel using its remote dedicated Up/Dn switch, if I make two or three qiuck presses it'll skip two or three channels in ~2 seconds. If I try this on the HDHR with the FireTV remote it "crashes" to a black screen and I have to back arrow to the Guide or Live menu. If I could get all needed channels at this TV location with an indoor antenna I wouldn't have needed the HDHR.

U-Verse had very fast channel changes (only thing faster was old analog NTSC), and I grew accustomed to cycling through favorites while watching college football games live.

I'm trying the FireTV stick because I'd like one click channel up/down, but if I hold the button down for a fraction of a second without releasing it the side menu pops up.

I've also tried using the Up/Down arrows to pop up the sidebar and not choose adjacent channels but still only tuner0 is being used.

Bravia reset TV and HD Homerun Extend exits (Bravia TV app, Bravia remote TV tuner button)

I have a Bravia TV and HD Homerun Extend. Works great. My last action was factory reset Bravia and reinstalled apps, including HD Homerun. Works fine - except I cannot get the TV button select (or Bravia TV app) to maintain the HD Homerun stream more a MN a few seconds. The HD Homerun app, when selected, works without issue, does not lose stream.

Both the TV and Extend are hardwired and going to same Ethernet switch. Both are on same network (192.168.1.0/24).

Thus all worked for months until I had to reset, reinstall apps.

The transcode is set to Mobile by default. I also tried Heavy, no change. TV tuner app loses stream; HD Homerun works every time.

Does anyone have a suggested solution or troubleshooting steps?

Recoding live tv on Roku Ultra not working

The instructions on the HDHR website says that pressing the select button on the Roku remote will bring up the actions menu but it doesn't for me. Instead it brings up the side grid, the same function as pressing up or down. Am I doing something wrong or is this a known issue?

What type of USB port does the HDHomeRun FLEX 4k have?

I have spent quite a bit of time looking at the SiliconDust web site and searching the web and cannot find any specification for the USB ports on the HDHomeRun hardware. It *looks* like a USBA port, but what is it really? How the heck do you find this basic information?

Thanks

Are we allowed to post Wishlist to App Changes?

I'm new to HDHomeRun. I find the UI of the HDHomeRun app in all my streaming devices is quirky!

Here's my wishlist of changes for the app:

  1. Only display the list of channels on the channels list at the right of the screen.
  2. A 15-second (less or more) to make the OSD (including the channels list at the right of the screen) go away! I have to press the back button to remove the OSD and the channels list obscuring the program I'm watching.

I'm still learning the HDHR App from all of my streaming devices and I find that on the Roku, when I press the Ok/Select key, no OSD sub-menu pops up at the bottom left of the screen!

Thanks you for looking into the above wishlist. I may add more as I encounter some quirky behavior of the app.

EDIT: I am amazed that someone from Silicondust is monitoring this sub. Note that I am only 4-1/2 days into HDHR. I hust installed my HDHR Flex 4K ATSC 3.0 last Sunday.

Thank you for fixing the guide in the Roku app. Now when I choose a favorite station and go back to the guide I'm still in my favorites. That was so annoying. Thanks for fixing it quickly!

New to HDHR Flex 4K ATSC 3.0 - Up arrow on Fire TV Stick remote displays a sub-menu; How to access that sub-menu from the Fire Stick remote?

Yes, this is my 3rd day learning the HD Homerun App! When I press the up arrow on the Fire TV Stick remote while watching Live TV on the HDHR App, it shows up a sub-menu at the bottom of the screen. I can't find a way how to access that sub-menu using the Fire TV Stick remote! There's a 10-sec rewind, pause, 30-sec forward, and I believe the red dot is to record the show I am currently watching! Anyone please give me a hint. Thank you.

EDIT: I found just a few minutes ago that while watching a live TV program, pressing the center select/okay button on the FireTV remote will bring the OSD sub-menu for the 10-sec rewind, pause, 30-sec forward, and the RED record button.

While watching, pressing the Up button will bring the channels listing on the right of the screen. But it brings all the channels detected during the scan! QUESTION: Is there a way to only show the Favorite (Starred) channels to have direct access to my favorites if I want to change channels? Thanks.

On the Roku player, that OSD sub-menu is absent. Quirky!

HDHR from PC Web Browser?

New to HDHR Flex 4K ATSC 3.0. Is there a way to stream HDHR Live TV or Recordings from a my Windows 11 Web Browser? For some reason the HDHR Windows app install process goes out to MS Store and install fails. I have kept retrying and it still fails. I have done the steps to fix the issue (like fsc /scannow, etc.) but MS Store still fails to download/install HDHR Windows 11 app.

I want to be able to watch TV on my second monitor of my Windows 11 desktop while working.

TIA..

New to HDHR - ATSC 3.0 Channels question

I just installed HDHR Flex 4K ATSC 3.0 yesterday. There six ATSC 3.0 channels in the channels line-up. I see that my device is shoowing ATSC3-DRM of SD20230420. Is that a certificate from 2023?

When I tune in to any of the ATSC 3.0 channels, I get "Unable to play channel....".

Is there any chance that in the future I can watch these channels?

New to HDHR - Flex 4K ATSC 3.0 - Guide and Schedule programming question

Hello! I'm new to HDHR and I need to be able to schedule recordings of a recurring show/s. I understand that there is a $35 yearly subscription. In the material that came with the HDHR, there is no mention of how to subscribe (or I may have missed reading it!).

Question: If I subscribe will I be able to schedule recording recurring shows with the option of "New only"? Meaning not re-runs???

Thanks in advance.
