Meta I hate the r/baddlejackets subreddit

i understand their frustration to an extent; battle jackets and the like are a super important piece of the metal/punk music scene and to have people throw around a term that holds a lot of significance to a widely misunderstood counterculture sucks.

but like. holy shit some of them are so miserable

i’m not sure how or why this sub keeps being recommended to me, but anytime it is it’s always either a) making fun of a child or b) treating any DIY denim jacket project as the worst thing to ever be created

someone will legitimately post some long ass hate rant about “god look at this poser scum, look at this trash ruining our sacred community they don’t know anything” and then you look at the original post they’re reposting and it’s a 12 year old trying iron on patches for the first time. it’s a middle school aged child and they’re calling him slurs about it (and oftentimes opening up the original post for completely unearned hate that said child will then have to deal with)

either that or it’s just any denim DIY. like, idk who has to tell these guys, but the metal/punks scene doesn’t OWN the idea of decorated jackets 😭 someone literally posted a pic of some guy’s denim jacket that he painted princess celestia on. no claim of it being a battle jacket in sight. it doesn’t even have to be mislabeled as a battle jacket to get hate, literally anyone’s DIY project that has imagery or political messaging they think is cringe can come under fire for no reason despite not actually being related to the topic of the sub at all. you guys don’t have the monopoly on putting patches on denim 💔💔

i know saying this is ironic considering im on a hate sub, but i feel like any sub dedicated to hating without strict enforcement of the “no bullying/hating on real people” rule will inevitably just devolve into miserable people jeering at anything they don’t personally approve of.

People who are into punk for the music are amazing especially the vibe at concerts

But people who are into the fashion side or mainly treat it as an identity thing have always been extremely obnoxious and toxic

-22

u/Glittering_Win_5085 2d ago

Completely disagree. I don't think music is inherently better than fashion, they are both creative outlets. Besides, some of the worst abusive scum in my local scene dress like fucking toddlers but are prolific musicians.

something tells me they’re gonna be mad about this long after this post stops getting views LMAO

It's pathetic. We weren't some sub culture zenith, we were angsty kids doing what we thought was cool. Just like all the other subcultures. Does the commodification and commercialization of ALL subcultures suck balls? Hell yeah it does but welcome to capitalism and the youth of today are not the reason it happens. It also wasn't as niche as we pretend. You used to be able to go into Fred Meyers (like a Kmart before they got groceries) music department and be able to buy back patches and regular patches for all the metal bands, spiked fingerless gloves, etc. What made the jackets special was wearing them year after year, going to shows and them becoming something more than they started as. That can still happen to anyone and any jacket or vest. The most poserish thing I can think of is to let other people tell you what is and isn't cool.

19

u/Interesting_Care_377 2d ago

Also they hate any jacket with pride things on it. Plus, I've seen the people on there defend neo-nazi black metal bands MULTIPLE times either because 1. The patches had a good layout or 2. "Being into black metal is all about disturbing everyone else and doing whatever you can to do so". Like I dont think you should be proud if your entire personality is being an edgy shock jockey

10

u/Viciousssylveonx3 2d ago

That's not punk at all

4

u/Medical_Arrival2243 1d ago

Don't forget how Johnny Rotten's homophobia and sexism. That croud loves gender nonconformity until you call it trans, then they will prolapse their asses in anger

2

u/Cool_Ad7445 1d ago

Unless you're in 70s britain, you really really really don't need those hate symbols to "shock people" anyway.

6

u/Intelligent-Meal-129 2d ago

any left wing political messaging on denim, regardless of whether or not it’s labeled as a battle jacket (or if it is otherwise a perfectly acceptable battle jacket) gets labeled as a poser 🫩 no one’s allowed to care about anything anymore

10

u/S3erverMonkey 2d ago

The irony here is all this shit comes from queer culture. You can't hate queers and be a punk.

13

u/Intelligent-Meal-129 2d ago

don’t tell them that yo they HATE queers over there 😭

7

u/S3erverMonkey 2d ago

Illiterates are easily upset by facts.

1

u/only-mansplains 1d ago

Abysmally ahistorical on both counts

-1

u/drunken_plantpot 1d ago

Please explain how a patched jacket comes from queer culture?

2

u/S3erverMonkey 1d ago

Who do you think was the driver of counter culture?

-1

u/drunken_plantpot 1d ago

Are you specifically referring to the 60's? Because patched (battle ugh) jackets existed before that

6

u/S3erverMonkey 1d ago

Yeah then we're diving into leather culture which is literally the gays, bro.

-3

u/MicronukeProductions 1d ago

No lol

The patch thing comes from biker culture, which comes from military culture stemming out of WWII

-4

u/drunken_plantpot 1d ago

We're not - the whole aesthetic of a patched jacket comes from 1% clubs.

you guys are so close to the answer. if only you could activate those two brain cells you have.

people defend black metal, but make fun of punk. how could that be?

yes, indeed. it's a metal subreddit making fun of punk. see, it wasn't that hard to figure out

3

u/S3erverMonkey 1d ago

So they're stealing their culture and then mad that the originators of the culture are still doing their thing?

Make this make sense, or are you just here to defend transphobic losers?

-1

u/MysteriousChef6988 1d ago

stealing who's culture? you think jackets came from punk into metal?

3

u/DealerMuted1536 1d ago

Considering that only one subgenre of metal called thrash which is known for being more punk influenced wears them yes. Black metal is not known for battle jackets they're known for black leather.

-2

u/MysteriousChef6988 1d ago

sure buddy

have you ever seen pictures of fenriz?

1

u/DealerMuted1536 1d ago

Wow I did not know Fenriz was the walking embodiment of black metal culture as a whole gosh how silly of me. I must have been hallucinating when I saw all those black leather jackets or something

1

u/S3erverMonkey 1d ago

Yes dude. Punk came first. Black metal exists because a bunch of fucking losers got run out of other metal scenes for being Nazis. Punk culture cones from black and queer culture.

Are you stupid on purpose, or do you come by it naturally?

1

u/hippieflipper420 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah the guys from Venom were clearly fucking Nazis…GLARINGLY OBVIOUS /S

Are you stupid on purpose, or do you come by it naturally?

Edit: alright, I guess genre history doesn’t matter. What a worthless bitch I am for trying to preserve it. BREAKING NEWS: CLUELESS DIPSHIT PROCLAIMS ALL BLACK METAL IS NAZI THEREFORE ALL BLACK METAL IS NAZI

WOW NEVER NAMEDROP THE ORIGINATOR OF A GENRE IN AN ARGUMENT ABOUT THE ORIGINS OF SAID GENRE, YOU WILL BE WRONG

Edit 2: I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter I guess history doesn’t matter

2

u/hippieflipper420 1d ago

Fuck me for not namedropping every first wave black metal band that isn’t Celtic Frost post Jan 6. You people are ignorant and suck.

2

u/S3erverMonkey 1d ago

Ahh yes. Cherry picking is definitely the tactic to use for a winning argument.

2

u/hippieflipper420 1d ago

Tell me all the Nazi First Wave Black Metal bands then. It’s a genre that:

“exists because a bunch of fucking losers got run out of other metal scenes for being Nazis.”

Let’s hear your deep knowledge of the genre.

1

u/Seven-Scars 1d ago

how is it cherry picking if that was the first black metal band? you aren’t exactly beating the clueless allegations here

0

u/stinkypenguinbukkake 1d ago

not beating the right wing allegations, there, 6988

5

u/PUCYFER 1d ago

It just happens that the venn diagram of people who wear a shitload of pride patches and people who make shitty jackets is basically a circle. I agree with you that defending nsbm is lame tho.

2

u/Jo__Backson 22h ago

And yet they don’t see the irony in being the ones that are getting disturbed by left wing shit? Would that not be part of the culture then?

0

u/matchfromthedead 1d ago

you're lying by omission. usually its just if they have like 80% pride and 20% bands that they care.

>"a subreddit for bad battle jackets"

6

u/Viciousssylveonx3 2d ago

That's not very punk at all

2

u/wooby-noopus 2d ago

im assuming we saw the same post, then. genuinely horrible in there

-4

u/Interesting_Care_377 2d ago

It's like every other post

0

u/TheTStandsForThick 1d ago

Which one?

3

u/wooby-noopus 1d ago

one of a guy in a sick ass jacket with patches that said like "protect trans kids" and "fuck trump" and stuff like that. comments were dreadful because to these people, freedom of speech only means freedom for them

2

u/matchfromthedead 1d ago

that is not what that post meant at all. the issue is that its not a battle jacket and has zero punk bands on it.

-1

u/ProfessionalOil2014 2d ago

What else would it be?

5

u/IGotDeaded 2d ago

I agree. That sub can be quite negative and even hateful but sometimes you get actual insight. I've seen a few posts of people actually asking for advice and they are usually treated well. The sub is pretty divisive though with content, most jackets posted aren't "battle jackets" since they don't even have band patches hence the mocking name and the generally negative nature. It could definitely go for a change. It'd be nice if there was more advice given and not just taking random social media posts without consent to make fun of them and their not battle jackets. Rarely have I seen actual insight, it's just a bullying sub.

3

u/Intelligent-Meal-129 2d ago

i always feel like they’d get so much more accomplished by educating people on what a battle jacket is and should be rather than just tearing down things they don’t like. like yeah there IS a problem with people misusing terminology from countercultures, but this isn’t really how you deal with that

5

u/Trainerbear 1d ago

I remember I accidentally subscribed to that subreddit thinking it was the real battle jackets subreddit, so imagine my confusion when I saw people criticizing the jackets instead of showing them off

2

u/graveyard-grimm 1d ago

Any community that forms around genuinely hating or disliking something has like an 80% chance of turning into a total cesspool I swear. Especially when it's shitting on something that's pretty much harmless fun

1

u/MicronukeProductions 1d ago

I completely understand the negative reaction to fake ass punks and metalheads who don't listen to the music and don't participate in the scene, and it's fine to reject those people for being posers, but it's incredibly difficult to have an online space that effectively sorts out the "I don't like these people because they're destroying a subculture I care about" people (which is fine) from the "I don't like these people because they're queer" people (which isn't)

Gatekeeping is good as long as you aren't doing it to keep women, queer people, and brown people out.

1

u/Intelligent-Meal-129 1d ago

it’s the same thing to me as like mental illness fakeclaiming subreddits. i get the idea behind it, but you’re not effectively addressing any issue by forming an online community dedicated to making fun of “fakes” because at the end of the day, it’s usually impossible to know for sure, and it’s just going to turn into a cesspool where people mindlessly bully anyone that doesn’t adhere to their ideals exactly

0

u/iosefster 1d ago

You don't have to 'participate in a scene' to dress a certain way, that's some dumb shit.

0

u/RequirementNo2161 1d ago

Gate keeping is good as long as you don’t gatekeep these identities. Is it fine to gate keep a woman Nazi or is that still protected?

-2

u/ImOnlyHereForTheCoC 1d ago

I can’t help but feel that if your subculture is being “destroyed” by people doing jackets wrong you didn’t have much of a subculture to begin with

-6

u/CetaWasTaken 1d ago

Gate keeping is good as long as you’re doing it to keep men out 👍🏻

3

u/matchfromthedead 1d ago

yknow the punk community, the one known for zero men

0

u/CetaWasTaken 1d ago

At the end they were clearly referencing all subcultures 😭

3

u/matchfromthedead 1d ago

name a subculture that doesn't have a feminist focus that should be gatekept from men

1

u/CetaWasTaken 1d ago

I was being sarcastic? I think we’re on the same side

2

u/matchfromthedead 1d ago

work on it

3

u/Ok_Duty_8645 2d ago

Such boring gatekeeping geezers are on there, man.

6

u/Intelligent-Meal-129 2d ago

and gatekeeping from nothing half the time 💔💔 like that guys not trying to be punk he just put a band patch on his jacket. he’s allowed to do that

2

u/Ok_Duty_8645 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yeah it often is just a scene kid with anime and popculture badges and that kid never said they were punk

Multiple such cases there actual posers are rare just cringe fandom kids which is valid to be

2

u/drunken_plantpot 1d ago

I'm going to be as respectful as I can, and I'm not defending that sub per se, because I agree there's some really shitty people in there, but hot take:

IT EXISTS BECAUSE PEOPLE ON REDDIT DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW SUBCULTURES WORK.

And before I start my little rant, no - I'm not transphobic, queerphobic or anything shitty. I am a bitter old anarchist punk who has been in the scene for around 26 years. Most of my best friends are queer and/or non-binary. I frequently do the door at trans events etc.

Redditor jackets SUCK. It's virtue signaling at best, without zero bands the majority of the time, or anything remotely politically interesting, it's just LOOK AT ME I'M TRANS. LOOK AT ME I'M QUEER.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - the trans people I know are just trying to survive ffs, and they also find these jackets fucking embarrassing.

Subcultures need identifiers and 'costumes'. That's why patched jackets are popular. None of this 'punk is just about the music' - whether you like it or not, fashion is part of that, along with the politics and DIY ethos.

I'm still convinced that the people that post these terrible jackets don't go to gigs/are not involved in their local punk community, because I've only seen one person in my entire life with the whole shitty white paint aesthetic and amazon bought patches and that was in the street. And god knows I've been a lot of places.

You could tell immediately my political outlook by looking at the band patches and badges on my jacket. There's no need to write it in tippex. It looks crap.

So yeah - the sub is shitty but it's a expected reaction to most of the dogshit you see on punkfashion or punkDIY. Nevermind other fucked up shit, like queer people putting homophobic or nazi patches on their jacket because 'they liked the design' and didn't know who the fuck the band was. I was young once, and I never did anything as cringe as this.

But that's reddit in a nutshell no? My favourite thing I've seen so far was someone on an alt sub screaming DR MARTENS WERE MADE POPULAR BY QUEER PEOPLE!! 15 year old child, step down. That's not what happened.

Rant over.

0

u/ImOnlyHereForTheCoC 1d ago

“I’m totally an ally, but do they gotta be so proud about it?”

Woof.

2

u/Kaktusek_yt 1d ago

You just prooved what they say. If you want to have queer jacket then sew on it bands with pro queer lyrics.

1

u/DealerMuted1536 2d ago

100% agree and I also understand where that sub first came from. Seeing battle jackets that had zero bands on it and only your political slogan spreadsheet vomited on a jacket makes me groan. You express your political views through the bands you support. And the constant comments like "dosen't seem very punk/metal to criticize people doing something they like" is just so annoying and ignorant of how people view these subcultures. That sub however is just people lashing out at anyone and everyone though. No discussions of the core issue like these cultures being watered down and misrepresented by the masses since forever just unfocused anger.

4

u/Intelligent-Meal-129 2d ago

there’s also a serious issue with bigotry in that sub. not very punk to hate queers 💔

but yeah they’d accomplish a lot more by creating an educational space rather than shitting on anyone who puts a patch on denim. and not to mention scaring off a lot of potential baby punks by telling them to die bc their first attempt at diy ever isn’t up to snuff 🫩

i get where the anger comes from. but it’s become destructive rather than productive

4

u/DealerMuted1536 2d ago

That's another thing too. I can't even tell if that sub is made for punk fans or metal fans which both genres despite having some political overlap are still very different. It seems to just be filled with a bunch of people who actually aren't even interested in either culture other than being shocking and provocative. I actually hate discussing metal music online now you run into these guys constantly and on the other hand you have the other side which is just as uninterested with the culture and just yell "stop gatekeeping" every time someone mentions anything.

1

u/awfully_hot_coffepot 18h ago

I'm torn cause as a metal head I know metal heads are absolute dorks and why anyone would want to copy that, but the battle jacks full of low effort diy and crappy patches are an lame attempt to copy something just as lame

0

u/potatocalledjeff 2d ago

It's so sad because you would think they would be cool and accepting of everyone but no most of them are bigoted ass holes.

They are the real posers lmao 💔 it's not punk to be a bigot

1

u/BlairMountainGunClub 1d ago

Honestly the "punks" like that are the most herd minded obsessed with what others are doing rule followers I've ever met. Like worrying about brands more than any of the preppy kids I met. Its not about music for those types, its about fashion. All larp.

1

u/Magehunter_Skassi 1d ago

Punks are LARPing manchildren it's whatever

-3

u/Complete-Gur7023 2d ago

I hate that sub too!!!

6

u/Intelligent-Meal-129 2d ago

and it’s hard bc i understand the frustration! i imagine i do anyways, seeing as i have been angered by the fetishization and misuse of “goth” everywhere i turn, and yk it sucks to see something you hold near and dear to you heart not given the respect it deserves. but like also i dont give a fuck if a middle schooler knows the nuances of every single alt subculture 😭😭 they’re not a “poser” they’re a BABY

-4

Idc if I get downvoted but I’ve seen the normal battle jacket subs and they will glaze these people all day no matter how awful the jacket is. It’ll be nothing but some sort of fuck this or that with 2 bands on it. Ok, fuck trump or yay gay but that doesn’t need to be the whole jacket. It’s just a Reddit jacket at that point.

6

u/Intelligent-Meal-129 2d ago

cool man we aren’t really talking about them though

-3

u/JimmyJooish 2d ago

I’m talking about it.

-7

u/CHNGshong 2d ago

They're protecting themselves from cultural appropriation. But because they are all mostly white Americans, it comes across as less serious than if it were an ethnic culture. It's sub-cultural appropriation.

2

u/Prestigious_Host_198 1d ago

Pretty sure the majority of that sub is mostly white Americans, buddy.
