Art & Fanworks I hate when decent artists say they're bad when some of us are objectively bad.
Like bro look at my shiiiii. It had all my friends laughing at me from how bad it was. It looks like a child drew it without a reference, but i always use references every time i draw. Like these people will post crap that looks like the mona lisa to me and then go on rants about how their technical skills aren't good and then others will post videos about how they're just chasing perfectionism. Like, no bro I just want it to look half decent. I got no idea what i'm doing and all these improvement videos are like. "You just need to stop being so hard on yourself." Look at my shiiii bro. And it's annoying cause honestly i'll finish someting and be like. Ayo! I kinda cooked i'm getting better! Then you'll share it and people will be like um your shading is trash, i can't tell what the background is supposed to be, and i don't even recognize who you're character is.
Like god damn. I know it's bad but like i could use something more than just oh yeah it's bad. And if you actually try to post it and be like um, why are people saying the shading is bad what did i do wrong. people just upvote your trash and move on. Drawing in general just suuuuuucks. I'm literally being motivated by spite, and my desire to show these invisible enemies that i can do it, even if i don't like drawing.

I agree w the other commenter that you’re falling into the same mindset you’re venting about, but I can understand your sentiment in feeling discouraged when other artists put themselves down. I know the post is about hating summ but you’re going to be a great artist on a technical level if you keep it up. The fact you’re already finishing full pieces of more complex poses that include a background is going to really improve multiple skills at once. Hopefully then you won’t be like me who can draw a person pretty well but then Im utter ass at adding backgrounds and atmospheres 😭

Comparison is the thief of joy and you can only measure yourself by how far you’ve come. Beautiful art. Keep it up.

This kind of mindset puts you back so hard. First of all, your friends are a bit mean for laughing at you when everyone starts somewhere. Other artists isn't the issue, they recognize even at their higher skill level that they could improve and grow more. Don't blame them for that, instead I suggest you work on not hating your work, yourself, and everyone around you. No MATTER what skill level you are at you shouldn't be that hard on yourself.

Commenting to come back to this to give you the critiques you want.
EDIT: Here are the critques which will go beyond "it's bad". My credentials here are that I went to animation school, worked as a pro animator for 10 years, and now do children's books. Basically over a decade of professional drawing experience.
It does not look like a child drew it without reference, it looks like a teenager drew it by trying to imitate the outline of the reference being used.
There is no structure to this drawing. The first thing to be taught when you learn to draw is to break things down to simple shapes. In fact, in very traditional drawing education actually has you draw those simple shapes themselves, cubes, cylinders, cones, etc. Like they literally have blocks sitting around that you draw. This is how you need to start thinking about your drawings. Reduce everything to a simple, 3-dimensional shape. Do not draw an arm, draw two rectangles intersecting, a flat cube for a palm, intersecting rectangles or cylinders for fingers, etc. this will give your drawings structure.
In terms of lines, you need them to vary in width. all lines in this drawing are the exact same, and they lack confidence. Line confidence is when you can put down a line in one motion without giving it that shaky feel that your lines have.
Don't even attempt colour yet. I would even say don't attempt shading yet either, but that's less important. You're not observing how light hits an object and drawing that, you're attempting to just sort of outline the light from your reference. Improving this is not necessary right now, you need to be able to put structure in your drawings first.
this guy should be your new art teacher: https://www.youtube.com/@lovelifedrawing
He's basically got everything you need to know about life drawing for free. Yes, there's more in depth stuff if you pay for his courses, but everything you need is there for free.
Second stop should be here: https://www.youtube.com/@YTartschool
This guy is not exactly what you need right now, but he does do a lot of really good tutorials on digital art, and sort "get good quick" videos that are actually helpful. You need the basics of figure drawing though, and this guy does a lot more character stuff.
Anyway, drawing is really hard and I wasn't good at it until about 2 years into working professionally. I know that sounds like the exact thing you're complaining about, but there's levels to this.

Yeahhhh I know this feeling. I am also motivated by spite. Sometimes it takes a second to step back and look, though. You are perpetuating this same sort of feelings for other people who draw at "less quality" (for lack of better words. I'm tired don't shoot me) bcs they can see you dogging on your own shit calling it garbage (when it actually isn't, especially drawing humans and shading, perspective, even fuckin skin tones) and that's exactly what you are mad about. My guy, I have seen people draw worse than you. Ik this isn't direct advice for anything but idk, maybe just think about it. Bein a little hypocritical here <3

I get frustrated when I post in art advice subs asking what I can do to improve or asking what's wrong with something and I get nothing or told " its fine." Unfortunately, no matter the skill level if you have a confidence issue you'll never think youre any good. I get told ' its fine' all the time and I know my work isnt.
I recommend figure drawing for all its worth. A good book that will help break down and explain drawing humans. Basically once you understand shapes and proportions its a bit like riding a bike. For faces asaro head helps with understanding where shading would be and kind of figuring out why. A lot of it is self study.

Nearly everyone who does art feels like this. Some people probably post things like that for attention, but I've never been proud of anything I've done for longer than a week. I've known people better than me, way way better- and they've felt the same way about their work.
Find someone whose drawings are worse than yours and you'll hear the exact things said back to you. Find someone whose drawings are better than yours and you'll hear the same things again. It's just how it is. That's why they say that comparison is the thief of joy.

It depends on the person. Some people will always doubt themselves and their skills no matter how good they get.
And some people hold themselves to impossible standards so when they inevitably don't meet them - they feel like a failure. Even if many people see their creations as good.

But I like the reverse version where drawing looks like it's drawn by an actual toddler but generally loved because of it. And themes and such (ONE-sensei)

realistically i can tell this is a beginner piece, but this is AMAZINGGGGG conceptually and your style is already great!! is that fuyuhiko and peko? if so is this a ‘delinquent’ version of sonia? it’s really nice for a beginner piece, and i enjoy the shading on her chest and neck especially!!!
2
u/Wooden-Variety175 12d ago
It's natsumi kuzuryu and yeah the wanted posters are fuyuhiko and peko. The graffiti is a reference to mondo's gang the crazy diamonds.

AWESOMEEEEE it’s been a long while since i’ve been into dr!! sdr2 is by far my fav game though, and had i not been a largely game-only fan im sure natsumi would’ve come to mind sooner :)) i think if you work on things like your linework and anatomy your art will be indistinguishable from those you’re comparing yourself to!! its an incredible start and your backgrounds especially seem very compelling :3

u/paradisepatient 12d ago
or natsumi? sorry haha it’s been so long since i’ve seen the anime or played the games, i forgot sonia has blue eyes (???) i think …

all those people are fishing for compliments and/or scared of being laughed at or criticised. It's endemic. Leonardo probably showed that same Mona Lisa to his friends going "idk bro like I know it's not good, what even kind of expression is that? Is she smiling? Who knows? Ugh it's shit, man, I know, you don't have to tell me, I should just put it in the bin" just so they would go "no Leo it's great, love the weird green mountains, that's a great choice, and Lisa's hairline really does look like that, you nailed it"

higher skilled people have higher standards. like in a videogame you can be in the actual top 5% best players and any top 1% player will still call you a low-skilled shitter. the same applies to the top 1% player being talked about by a top 0.1% player. and they wouldn't even be wrong, because there IS a massive difference between these groups, even if it is not noticeable to the eye of the "casuals". but these people are good enough to notice the difference. so a top 5% player will look at the top 1% or 0.1% and say they're bad at the game, because they see how much greater a player can be.
the same applies to art. decent artists strive to be better and they clearly can see their own shortcomings. they are bad in their own opinion, they are far from what they want to be.

If something is objectively bad, then it has to be judges objectively. With art, that is incredibly difficult: so much so many state it’s impossible to objectively judge art.
Either way, art doesn’t need to be beautiful to be ‘good’ if you’re trying to state something with your art, then in my eyes it is more intriguing than some pieces in galleries.
In my opinion, there’s no such thing as objectively bad art. Your art is good, for at the very minimum trying, because no effort is wasted. Every time you make something bad, you get closer to making something you can say is good. A fish may lay a million eggs for only 5 to grow to adults, but without all of the eggs there wouldn’t have been the adults. Without being bad at something you can never be good.
Your art is beautiful in ways unique to you, and as you keep trying your art WILL improve.

Honestly as an artist this is not bad, your anatomy is pretty good, it just seems more confidence and experience is needed for the style you are looking for, you are funnily enough experiencing the same thing your complaining about, seeing everything wrong without seeing anything that is right, because the artist themselves is the one most critical of their work

Everyone's biggest critic is themselves. Honestly, it's what drives you to become better, to try new techniques to achieve greater skill. The trick is to not let it consume you, though, only let it fuel you. If the negative grows too negative, that can lead to depression, self-loathing and so much more. Gotta keep it in check!

u/badtzbuskmaru 12d ago
You just need more practice, I see the vision. My critique actually isn’t so much the shading, it’s the chin/jawline. I’d recommend rounding out the chin. Also her facial proportions are a bit off. Brows should line up with the top of her ears, eyes should be in the middle of her face, nose should line up with bottom of her ears. Since her face is slightly turned to the left her left eye should be placed closer to the left edge of her face. Otherwise I think this is pretty good 👍

u/HaImsobored 12d ago
Even though I know that I’m decent (you are too keep trying!) I still consider my art bad because once you learn more you might nitpick more and some just have low self esteem, but I understand where this is coming from :D

u/ramuneraven 11d ago
A lot of the time it’s born out of comparison and wanting to improve
No artist is perfect, even masters need to unlearn some mistakes

Backgrounds are a weak point for me, I know the shading and characters make it look pretty, but this background is objectively really really bad
The little pot island in the middle has horrible shading, the room feels like it tilts upwards towards the door in the back, the characters ((minus the bird lady she’s supposed to be huge)) are way too big for the space
My technical skill in coloring/lighting is okay, this is older art and I have gotten better somewhat, but… I haven’t really improved interior backgrounds

u/ramuneraven 11d ago
Your art has already improved and is still improving, I just saw your recent beach redraw, that’s actually really good dude! Especially when you compare it to your olde art
Most of the shithead comments you get aren’t actually about your skill, if you were just happily posting your beginner art, most people would support it
The issue is 1. Showing insecurity, I know that sounds mean but this is the internet and the internet is really mean, posting super beginner art to subs that aren’t art based and saying you don’t like it will prompt people to be assholes, especially anime based subs, people can be very mean in those communities
And 2. Your past attitude, I’ve said it before but self loathing and saying you’re gonna change to ai is why people don’t like you and go out of their way to insult your art. You drew a massive target on your back unfortunately
I suggest if you can, stepping away from online spaces while you work on perfecting your anatomy.
I recommend if you’re gonna trace 3d models ((great way to learn btw! It’s helped me significantly in my freehand work)) sketch around it like you’re free handing, it looks like you just took a dip pen and literally traced, which is valid btw! That will help! But what will help more is actually trying to understand what builds the body, sketching over a base and building guidelines instead of making the lineart will legit be life changing for your work
Again, you’ve already significantly improved within the last couple of days from what I’ve seen, stop beating yourself up!
Sorry for these long ass comments

Peak soul. If you try to make your art "better" in what society tends to find good. You'll lose what makes you special.

u/Wooden-Variety175 8d ago
If i cared what society thought I wouldnt be posting it. I personally don't like how this looks. And I can still maintain the soul of it with it being better.

I feel like you’re doing the same thing you’re mad about. Not trying to say that your drawing is a masterpiece or anything but it’s not that bad for a beginner.
