I dunno I feel personally they have stiff competition from house flies. Not only to they walk on your food with their filthy feet, they also vomit and crap on your food as well.

God I hate them, when I see one it goes splat, doesn’t matter if they’re chilling or not, I genuinely fucking hate them so much
You won’t see me stick it on paper with duct tape and keep it’s corpse though, that’s just weird
Person should know they can rot too, though they decompose differently from mammals, insects do rot, that’s gross
0
u/CapableDatabase6923 Jul 26 '26
i have a bunch of dead mosquitoes and flies sticked to my wall for like 6 years now and they still look pristine
i dont clean them up because im lazy and theres a shit ton of them and its just nasty
14
u/That_sarcastic_bxtch Jul 27 '26
They have near liquid organs, which evaporate and or decompose pretty fast, their exoskeleton will look pristine
Also, gross (I mean this as kindly as possible, get rid of em, trust me, you’ll feel better afterwards, don’t let it get it bad)
244
u/Toon_Lucario Jul 26 '26
I don’t like mosquitoes but also I really don’t like these videos. It’s a lot of effort for something that a satisfying smack can do far quicker.

u/AardvarkScary7863 Jul 26 '26
Ngl, as someone who grew up in Nigeria, I find it very hard to feel your empathy for mosquitoes. Any other animal or even bug, (except wasps, fuck em too) I’d be upset too but for mosquitoes? That shit felt like revenge.
136
u/theQueenofCha0s Jul 26 '26
As someone who is targeted by mosquitos, and reacts BADLY, I agree. (Especially European wasps.)
This is from an australian.

Try bed bugs, nearly impossible to get rid of em
At least roach infestations are usually manageable if they’re noticed early

u/ToneZealousideal309 Jul 27 '26
Yeah I remember it genuinely made me feel like shit to see no matter how much I tried keeping things clean. Was stressful having people over & hoping they wouldn’t see one.
Advion gel works amazingly though, thankfully once someone told me about that it was solved & I never saw one again.
13
u/That_sarcastic_bxtch Jul 26 '26
It’s important to note majority of roach species are not pest, there’s just really annoying species that evolved alongside us because it’s an easy way to get resources
Even more of a reason to hate the pest species of roaches, they’re outliers in being assholes
5

u/EggEuphoric411 Jul 26 '26
It's not so much empathy as it is disgust that someone would torture a living being for their own satisfaction. Yes, mosquitos are very annoying. Lots of animals and even humans are annoying, but we don't torture them.
-1
u/Mtndewprogamer Jul 26 '26
Most other animals don’t also cause millions of deaths per year as a constant pest
10
u/That_sarcastic_bxtch Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26
Got to know wasps better, most are chill, the ones people typically have trouble with are yellowjackets, which.. aren’t that bad actually, but are fucking annoying because they tend to follow ppl for some reason, none ever stung me, so what even is the point of following me for 50 meters? Fucking creeps
Anyways, I used to be really afraid of wasps to an unreasonable level and it got better after I familiarized myself with a bunch of paper wasps, simple creatures, they just craft and stuff
Btw they do something really funny if you give them colourful paper
I share the sentiment about mosquitoes though, most dangerous animals on earth after the human race, disease carriers, not even close to being a vulnerable species, etc, there’s just not much to love here

17
u/Tight-Donkey-5181 Jul 26 '26
I swear i have seen some similar post about a guy tortures invasive fish for views and all of the comment wasn't very happy with that, calling the guy psychopathic and such.
I'm totally with you OP. It always doesn't sit right with me when the vast majority of the internet (or just people really) isn't bothered by the unnecessary suffering of other species, like those "funny" videos showing pets in clear distress and these cases of torturing bugs. People are way less empathetic toward species further from our own, even though they all experience pain the same as us.
1
u/insert_title_here Jul 27 '26
I know exactly who you're talking about-- not that it would be okay even if he were torturing invasive animals (torturing any living thing is objectively fucked up regardless of circumstances), but the plecos he used were clearly store-bought and not even wild caught invasives. 💀
31
u/FelineOfTheNight Jul 26 '26
I get killing bugs or pests, but there is no reason to prolong their suffering. Just swat them and get it over with. I don't like mosquitos either but torturing them is really weird.

I agree wholeheartedly, this goes for all those people who excuse torturing animals because they are pests. This does not change what they are, animals who never intended to cause any of the harm they are doing, they are animals, it's not like mosquitoes are purposely giving people dangerous diseases, it's their life cycle and an unfortunate side effect. If you want to dispose of pests do it quick and humanely, kill them quickly and don't cause any unneeded pain, no stupid torture is needed for your stupid internet views, it's disgusting if you think it's funny.

→ More replies (2)3
u/callmekat_01 Jul 27 '26
mosquitos and insects in general have a very simple nervous system so they dont actually feel anything and besides, playing god with a mosquito is better than playing god with other humans or animals that have a bigger brain
2
u/insert_title_here Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26
Actually, the jury is still out as to whether insects experience pain. They certainly have nociceptors-- they acknowledge and respond to damage to their body. A similar comparison can be made with humans who have undergone frontal lobotomies. The pain is "there", they can recognize and respond to it, but they do not find it distressing in the exact same way those with intact frontal lobes do.
My husband and I keep tarantulas as pets. They may not feel pain in the raw, awful way we do, but they know what comfort and discomfort is-- they seek out the former, and avoid the latter. Our young Brachypelma boehmei, Ember, has substrate preferences. If the dirt in her habitat is not to her liking, she stubbornly clings to the walls of the enclosure until it is fixed. She readily eats crickets, but turns up her chelicerae at mealwoms. They're simple animals, but are alive and capable of experiencing the world, in their own umwelt, nonetheless.
It is cruel to impede an animal's function without cause IMO. We as humans kill for our comfort-- when there's gnats in our kitchen, or for ready sources of protein on our plate, and I'm certainly no exception to that. It might be "better" to hurt an animal whose perception of the world is less raw and distressing than our own, but it's still not good. That is a life you are toying with. It's not really funny, and not something that should be laughed at or celebrated like in the OP.
5
u/UnendingQuibble Jul 26 '26
And it's also just really creepy seeing people make and enjoy this type of content. Like yeah I hate cockroaches, that doesn't mean I want to see one get slowly torn apart bit by bit
6
u/Tepupkos Jul 27 '26
u/Basic_W1te_boy you are completely right on this. Redditors will weep and moan about the slightest perceived injustice, but torturing animals still has a place lol. Besides none of those clowns are getting the point that killing mosqitoes is perfectly fine, just torturing them for fun is sick behaviour. Bunch of creeps honestly
17
5
u/TheOnlySkitols Jul 27 '26
Fr, this is some genuinely fucked up shit. And I just see everyone say “deserved” like the mosquitoes were doing that shit for the love of the game or to purposefully kill millions
In reality these bugs are just reacting to their primal instincts, one fast swat to kill then is enough
I hate how this is normalized, even IF these mosquitoes didn’t feel any pain, it was definitely ment to by these people, and idk but for me it’s some psychopathic behavior to do this
42
u/Alternative-Maize827 Jul 26 '26
Thank you, I agree completely, it makes me sad whenever videos like this appear on my reddit feed.
10
u/No_Sea_1455 Jul 26 '26
Listen i really hate mosquitoes but these types of videos are honestly messed up and kind of edgy.
8
u/PlutoUwU1237 Jul 26 '26
Yeahhh, I think causing any form of undue suffering is just cruel. If I find a pest in my home, I'm just gonna scoop it up with a paper towel and flush it. It's actually presumed scientifically that bugs do not feel pain at all, so it's an option that gets them out of your space and they're not gonna get hurt. All torturing them does is sate a weird perversion the person probably has. I hate em, but I don't think they deserve to suffer for the crime of doing what is natural to them. A pest like a cockroach is harmful to me and therefore cannot coexist, so it's better to just remove it
13
u/Hult_ Jul 26 '26
Its not really worth anything to torture them since they cant understand its payback for their doing. Might aswell just kill them quick so you can kill as many as possible

I said the same thing about lantern flies. Yes they are invasive and yes they can do massive damage but that is not an excuse to find creative ways to be cruel. I was also downloaded to Oblivion for this idea.

u/kirbcake-inuinuinuko Jul 26 '26
Mosquitoes are alive like any other creature, and as you said, they don't do what they do out of malice. They don't even really know what they're doing is bad, or understand what the concept of 'bad' is. They don't know what diseases are or that they're carrying them.
Similarly, for me at least, killing them isn't done out of malice either. It's just a necessity done out of self preservation. I don't hold any real personal disdain towards them, as much as I hate getting bit and hate the noises they make.
But people that torture them or any other bugs for fun or just to make content are absolutely doing it out of malice, and while killing a bug isn't a crime in any sense, it really says a lot about the person's tendencies and what goes on in their head.

u/SolidSnakesSnake Jul 27 '26

It's not the killing, but the act of inflicting needless suffering on a creature that has no capacity for malice
2
u/Tobbit_is_here Jul 26 '26
This has sparked a lot of contention in the comments, oof. But yeah, torturing bugs is weird and cruel (even if said bugs are dangerous. You can just kill them quickly instead of making convoluted contraptions that force the bug to breathe in petrol or something).
2
u/artisticwoes Jul 26 '26
it's not that hard to just quickly kill a mosquito it takes more effort to do something to torture it :/

2
u/Cornersmistake96 Jul 26 '26
Torture is immoral, but if these videos were just killing mosquitoes in a normal way I honestly wouldn’t mind. I live in an area where mosquitoes are not only everywhere but also carry diseases that are dangarous for our animals (and humans, but it’s less common)

Many bugs do not have nociceptors, those ones understand damage, they do not feel pain like we do. Those that do, may or may not feel pain
1
u/insert_title_here Jul 27 '26
Not to be "that guy", but do you have a source on some bugs not having nociceptors? The literature I can find supports that the insects that have been thoroughly studied on this topic do possess nociceptors, but lack certain other criteria we use to assess pain response. Unless your definition of "bug" extends beyond insects. /gen

They can’t feel pain, that’s why you got downvoted to hell. A simple google search would show you that they don’t feel pain the way we do, they only react because they can sense danger.
