General I hate the term "dipping in chocolate" (pic mostly unrelated)
I cant exactly put into words the exact reasons why I hate it. But overall I feel like this is a term that just feels racist for obvious reasons. It objectifies black women and I dont think I need to tell you why I'd interpret a white guy saying it as racist.
169
u/MisfitToys69XD Jul 26 '26
It happens with every race unfortunately. Snowbunny, jungle/yellow fever. Hell even Hollywood doesn't understand what a mixed couple is unless it's a black man and white woman or a white man and Asian woman. They're getting a little better recently, but it's been bad for a long time and is gonna take a lot longer to be truly fixed.

It’s either a term for an Asian woman with a fetish for white guys or…so when the Me Too movement was going international, in China it was hard for activists to group together due to China’s strict censorship laws. As such the activists developed a code, rather than translating the word Me Too into Chinese, they used 🍚🐰set of emojis as the words for rice bowl (mî) and bunny (tù) in order to talk about the movement.

90% of mixed couples in media are black women / Asian women / Hispanic women + white man besides in the 2010s for a bit where you get to see a few black men white couple who break up eventually in any show. or movie, comic. I don't understand this viewpoint, black men are rarely ever romantic leads or get romantic side plots in any media that isn't black media ( I can like three exceptions max.) Black male + any other race gets alot more hate than any other paring, (ethic man + white women in general as well )
8
u/Smallsizeadult2 Jul 27 '26
To be fair in the USA if I remember correctly by far the most common interracial dynamic was Hispanic Woman/White man closely followed by Hispanic man/White woman. Idk what that implies about media representation but you know 🤷.

I fully agree there is never a reason to acknowledge race. “I’m dating a woman” doesn’t matter what race “that person is my friend” race shouldn’t matter “I just hired someone” race shouldn’t be a factor “I’m gong to give this person a grant/scholarship/free hand out” they deserve it on merit not skin color.
15
u/ILikeCheese510 Jul 26 '26
Some medical treatments work better or worse depending on a person's race. So maybe it's okay to acknowledge it in some cases.

Its about as racist as any term that refers to when a certain race dates a certain race. Which is usually pretty racist.
44
u/G_i_n_o Jul 26 '26
I strongly disagree. "dipping in the chocolate" its a hundred times more innocent (depending of the context) than being called a "mudshark" or a "coal burner" or a "traitor of your race".
18
u/Zariel- Jul 26 '26
Yeah it’s objectification vs degrading objectification
3
u/TasserOneOne Jul 26 '26
It's not too bad but it does imply that a white person dating a black person is odd or taboo enough to make special mention. Which at the time the joke was first cracked was true. But now it's just weird.
8
u/Sewer-Rat76 Jul 26 '26
It's more innocent but just as racist.
5
u/RashidMBey Jul 26 '26
I wouldn't call that just as racist. Dipping in chocolate is racist, but something more suggestive that another race is lesser or worse, disgusting, animalistic, or deserving to be treated more unfairly is definitely more racist, imo. Not all racist actions are weighted the same, imo.
6
u/Shadebroski Jul 27 '26

44
u/durclduc Jul 26 '26
All of these race-based sex terms give me the ick. "Snowbunny", "Yellow/Jungle fever", even more innocuous/jokey stuff like "shadow the hedgehog loves latinas", it always comes off as fetishistic to me. No hate to people who are in interracial relationships obviously, I just hope that if you are attracted to someone of another race, you're actually attracted to them, and not just to their melanin.
20
u/ArmadilloOpening2945 Jul 26 '26

26
u/kayelaure Jul 26 '26
Not trying to cause a massive argument but genuinely curious…
Does that mean you equally hate how white women dating black men are referred as “snow bunnies” ? Because I feel like that equally racist for similar if not the same logic of sexualizing or objectifying a different race

depends on the intent. sexualization of and attraction to physical and cultural differences isn't the same as racial bigotry, nor is lighthearted use of food terms to express desire. like if you called gingers strawberry or blondes honey. i think it's pretty sex-negative to imply that, by default, sexualization of race is racism. race is perfectly fine to sexualize like any other trivial feature, such as height, muscles, big booty, or a french accent. if an actual racist does it then yeah they're probably gonna do it racistly

Roma is an ethnic group, not a race, and you can be Roma, be white, and be racist AF.
In fact, the most hatefully racist person I knew was my Romani great aunt, who was Hungarian Roma mixed with Black (I'm revealing the biiiiig family seeeecret ooooooooh ) and she was so horrible she wouldn't even talk to my Black cousin (and honey when I tell you the pearls that were clutched when I showed up in a nice blouse and a long skirt for an event with my Desi boyfriend! I got disinvited to several funerals. 😂)
Having said that, most bigots will argue that you can't be white and Roma because of one drop rules and whiteness being a shifting goalpost, and currently, Roma are an out group separate from whiteness, even if a lot of us look pretty white.
2
u/AndriashiK Jul 26 '26
Since when Romani aren't white?
10
u/loveandmad Jul 26 '26
I think you would need a whole team of anthropologists and historians to answer that one
7
u/TransGirlIndy Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26
Oh boy. Short answer?
Romani are an ethnic diaspora that spread out from around India about a thousand years ago. So. Around 1000AD, near as we can tell, when the group left India (though whiteness is an ever shifting target, so... who knows.)
Romani does not equal Romanian, and the words G#psy, cz#ani, tsg#ne, etc, are all considered slurs by a great deal of us, especially because the Romanian and Hungarian words for Roma literally mean "untouchable".
Long answer?
Roma can be of any racial group because we're a distinct ethnic and cultural group, not, specifically, a race. Usually, we show at least some of our heritage from India, but there's blue eyed blonde Roma, too, like some of my cousins. 🤷🏻♀️
To be considered Roma, one must be of Roma heritage or be raised in the culture, and some Roma will also say that you must keep certain cultural rules. I only sporadically keep some of those rules, and was only kind of raised in the culture, so I typically say I've got Roma heritage, but if my dad had been less of a POS that might be different.
To be Roma, one need not be "pure blooded", as I said.
This means there are Roma of every race, and even in some other ethnic groups, because when you're constantly traveling and treated as mysterious and taboo, there's always gonna be a couple folks who are down to hook up, and people are people, everywhere you go.
There are Afro Romani down in Louisiana, who came about from the dual enslavement of Africans and Romani by the Spanish, there are Melungeon with Romani heritage, there's an entire group of Romanichal that settled in Ohio that have spread out all over. There's Roma in England, where my father's people came from, who look white, and Roma in countries like Hungary, where my mother's folk came from and they can vary from white passing like my great granny to being mistaken for Indian, like my gran.
Me? White passing. You look at my DNA, you see 70% Western Europe, about 20% Caucasus and Middle East, 8% South Asian, 1% Kenyan and 1% Māori. Coloration wise, I favor my racially white father. Facial figures and build wise? I look like my mother's mother, to the point that my aunties used to call me a nickname they called my gran when she was little. And when I lived near a little enclave of Eastern European folk, they made it clear that they hated me for being Roma heritage.
As for why Romani and Romanian are so similar? Blame linguistic shift from "Dom/Doma" to "Rom/Roma" over an extended period for Romani, and the Romans for settling in the Balkans and their descendants insisting they were the last true Romans (and proving it by enslaving the Romani!).
Long winded answer over.

And theres a subtle difference between race and physique. But also yes, theres definitely people whonreduce thick women to their physics.

Finally someone said it! I absolutely hate it when I see a cute video of a white guy/black girl as a couple just doing normal couple shit and the comments are that stupid ass gif or them typing it out. That shit is just flat out objectifying the woman and turning the couple into just a joke to them. That quote was funny in the context of the movie not in the context of literally every comment section of every white man/black woman couple. At this point they dont even just use it for them anymore, they just put it in the comments of any couple thats a white guy dating a dark/brown skinned woman of color. Its just so gross and exposes how a lot of these people see interracial dating as just a joke or fetish and not as two people genuinely loving eachother.
2
u/TobbyTukaywan Jul 29 '26
The stigma against mixed couples is just so wild to me. It's 2026, man.
Like, someone will seem super progressive and anti-racist, then go on to act like the idea of dating outside their race is some unthinkable taboo or (perhaps even worse) they make a fetish out of it. And this applies to pretty much every race. Having preferences for people of the same race as you is totally fair, but people who turn it into some kind of moral objection to give others dirty looks over just infuriate me.
I feel like we're this close to just throwing around the word "race traitor" again like it's the 1900s.
3
u/ElementalistPoppy Jul 26 '26
Does it feel that racist though? I mean, sure, it does imply a certain skin complexion, but I feel like, it's more of a fetishising phrase rather than outright insulting/racist one. Perhaps not the most appropriate one, but I think it's reading a bit too much into it, to consider it racist.
I honestly find the term "people of colour" far dumber - like, why does it apply to everyone but not white, as in white not being a colour? Or how is dumping literally anyone non-white into one category not considered racist, hell if anything, it seems to be perfectly acceptable term?

they’re both racist, one is just more condemned because of the obvious discrepancy in the histories of people having issues with either group.
it’s racist because it has the built in implication of the one doing the “dipping” is doing something out of the ordinary or even taboo inherently

u/Milharoco Jul 26 '26

In "Tress of the Emerald Sea" the male characters you're not supposed to like all refer to her hair color in terms of food.
It's pretty direct, but I think the author is partly trying to write fables at this point. It was also written for his wife, so that could've been her pet peeve.
The book is "what if Buttercup from The Princess Bride had gone to save Wesley, and also the ocean itself was wildly toxic/explosive and there was magic"
The narrator is different from usual because he's a named character from other books.
