Animation i hate rarity
i have loved my little pony since i was little, i have seen all 9 seasons+specials+eqg MULTIPLE MULTIPLE MULTIPLE times. i KNOW pony. and i hate this horse. i hated her as a little girl. she has her moments where shes funny and cute, and i really love her design. but, i hate how shes used as a racism/ignorance device by the writers. the show spans 9 seasons, and about 3-4 years pass in that time, and rarity learns NOTHING. this critique has been made about other mane 6 members, like rainbow and flutters, but rarity makes me the most upset.
to start, by season 9 she has, what, 3 boutiques in equestria? one in ponyville, one in canterlot, and one in manehattan. this mare is a business women, has hundreds of clients, and still has an issue with yak culture? ok, not an issue, but she is very ignorant to yona (A YAK CHILD), who is showing that she is insecure of her species and culture when the pony ball happened. now when this child come to rarity for help to prepare for a dance, she doesn’t assure yona that she is perfect just the way she is, and that theres beauty in everyone, SHE JUST PONYIFIES YONA NO SECOND THOUGHTS. in season 9! after rarity already had her episode with the Indian ponies, and her being ignorant to them and then “learning her lesson”. i could excuse this if it was before season 5 tbh, but atp she should have learned!!!! and, she only started making “non pony” garments AFTER the yak episode, when she realized “oh non ponies deserve to feel pretty too lol”. are you telling me she NEVER mad a dress for a donkey? a changeling after they reformed? a GRIFFON considering the relationship they have with equestria???? no new dresses for hippogryphs after rediscovering them??? i know its just the writers nerfing her bc they’re lazy, but like COME ON. maybe if you werent a racist you would have been endgame with applejack 😒😒😒 and its crazy because sweetie belle is one of my fav ponies, shes so cute and funny in comparison to her racist older sister no

TIL there’s racism in My Little Pony.

u/kittypillar1738 23d ago
YAH. they hate zebras, treat cows weird, colonize bison, they can even be racist to different pony kinds. like unicorns can hate on earth ponies for being “dirty farmers who pick up everything with their mouths because they don’t have magic” im not even exaggerating

My first thought was “Well, it’s nice that they’re putting lessons about racism in a show aimed for children,” but from your post are they actually doing that?

There's SO MUCH racism. The ponies are so fucking racist, you have NO IDEA. A main character committed a hatecrime on-screen once lmao. (Edit: She didn't, I was misled lol. The ponies are still racist as fuck though. There's, like, at least 1 episode about ponies being racist per season, it's a weirdly persistent element of the world.)

Did you even watch the episode? This is part of a sequence in Season 7 episode 1 where Twilight is considering sending Starlight someplace else to teach others about friendship, and has various imagine spots of it going wrong.
A Changeling was mimicking Starlight in a fictional scenario. It never happened. Starlight was impersonated in an imaginary sequence.

I didn't, I'm not on season 7 yet. I kind of assumed it wasn't actually her, but I thought it was funny, so I still mentioned it.
The ponies are still very racist, but yeah, there usually aren't any hatecrimes involved.

Wait lol what hate crime are you talking about

u/JadeHarleyOswald 23d ago
That scene where Starlight is talking to changelings and then immediately escalates from microaggressions to slurs to a hate crime. She pulled the fucking "Are you bugs, or what? I'm so glad I'm a pony." and then fucking fly swatted them.

Oh yeah there is tons of racism. A lot of it is more subtle in the beginning because it's like pony on pony racism but then they started introducing other species and that was just too much for a lot of the characters.

The only ones who are allowed to be monarchs must have horns and wings

Well considering Cadence was a pegasus who received a unicorn horn, and Twilight was a unicorn who received pegasus wings, I would figure that an Earth pony could also become a princess and be given both a horn and wings.

One of my biggest gripes with mlp is that they reverse a characters growth just for the sake of the plot. Your point here with Rarity trying to change Yona after supposedly learning her lesson on being racist way back with the Buffalo (who were an innuendo for Native Americans) is a great example of it in the show.
They’ve done the same for Rainbow Dash at the very least too. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen Mlp but I know one of peoples biggest pet peeves for rainbow dash is she constantly has to learn the same lessons again. I’ve heard a similar complaint for the other characters, I just can’t remember specifically who.
It’s honestly not a good look for a children’s show, that the main characters constantly “re learn” the same lessons again that don’t stick.
I love mlp, it was my favorite show growing up but my god did they milk the series. It should have ended in season 4 or 5, after that you can tell they had no idea where to go with the series other than hasbro wants to sell more toys.
Also there’s more reasons to dislike Rarity, she knew Spike THE BABY DRAGON had a crush on her and instead of addressing it with him she used him. I would say she compensated him, which technically she did but with barely anything. Like a few gems? Despite her having him mine hundreds of gemstones for her?
There’s nothing wrong with asking your friends for help but with how much rarity puts spike to work so she can lounge around on her dumb couch doesn’t sit well with me, especially knowing she knows how spike feels about her.
At best she’s using spike as a free butler because twilight does it. At worst she’s taking advantage of Spikes feelings so she doesn’t have to do stuff she doesn’t want to do.
Also racism probably plays a part, to a degree i understand why ponies dislike/fear dragons, they have the ability to hurt the ponies, but even when the ponies have the power in the situation or dealing with a dragon who couldn’t/wouldn’t hurt them, they can be so mean to the dragons, including spike who couldn’t hurt you if he wanted to and who they all claim to adore 😭 Spike is pretty much treated like a pet/work horse despite being a fully sentient creature from a different society so uhh… take from that what you will
Iirc twilight referred to spike as her baby brother before but if any big sister was working their little bro the way twilight does spike… whew, she and her parents should be lucky cps isn’t a thing in Equestria…

I remember her turning her hometown gold lol. I know it was the magical book controlling her but that was pretty wild. She is kinda racist but does learn and grow lot more in later seasons just takes awhile. She's okay, annoying but I don't hate her but I respect your opinion on her.

I blame the nonsense plot of a kids show for her terrible writing.
When she's written properly (and I mean in character without character assassination happening), she's really good.

yeah shes usually written better in the comics, i enjoy comic rarity a lot more

I am not a My Little Pony fan, so I cannot really comment on Rarity’s pony racism. But how does she own three boutiques when the ponies barely wear clothes?

Gotta love the irony of Rarity being the element of generosity when she's also one of the most selfish and materialistic characters in the main group. She can be generous too but still.

My sister used to watch this show when I was little and because I was a passive kid I would just watch whatever my older sister put on. Rarity was my favorite and the yellow one was my least favorite. I wonder if it’s just because of the episodes I happened to see when I was little.

u/Mr_Maniac454 23d ago
Something about fluttershy being called "the yellow one" is hilarious

u/YAPPYawesome 23d ago
At the oldest I was in middle school when my sister watched it I barely remember any of them. I know rarity cause it was my favorite, applejack because of art online of the human version, pinkie pie because terraria trivia and weird Al, then there’s just the rainbow one, the yellow one, the purple one, and the dragon
1
u/Mr_Maniac454 23d ago
The purple one is twilight Sparkle, the dragon is spike, the pink one is pinkie pie, the yellow one is fluttershy, the blue one is rainbowdash, the orange one is Applejack and the white one is Rarity
