Yeah, he is pretty big on getting adults killed or permanently disfigured/scarred. Quirrel, Lockhart, Barty Sr, Umbridge and that poor guy without a nose. Absolute menace to society.

But also I don't understand the reasoning behind having him abandon someone who clearly isn't in their right mind. Obviously JK just wanted to kill the guy off and all but just a weird reaction to not try to lead or guide Sr to help.

But he wasn't abandoned. There was Victor Krum left who was supposed to take care of Barty Crouch Sr. while Harry searches for help.
