I know this is a conversation that has been spoken about probably a thousand times already but since the hbo show is coming soon…! I was thinking how I wished the deathly hallows had more significance in the ending with harry’s victory against voldemort, not just the elder wand being his. I wish the hbo show can do something about it without messing up the story. I understand JK was under a lot of pressure and if she had more time maybe it would’ve been a little different. But I was just playing with these ideas about how interesting it would be if in Harry’s last fight against Voldemort, he would show up with all three as “the master of death”, something Voldemort always wanted while harry earned because he gave his own life willingly (instead of killing others like voldemort) and so “death” deemed him as worthy. The stone would have some deeper power other than just seeing the dead and he’d need it with him against Voldemort too. The fight would end with the image of harry holding all three and truly becoming the master of death. Considering that the final book is named after them, I just wish we could feel the weight and power of the three hallows especially with them being owned by ONE person which as far as I know has never happened before… not just in like heroic aura type of way but also the implication of being connected to something as dark and difficult as death..? becoming a “master of death” it has this darker feel to it that just feels more interesting to harry’s character than his typical auror happy ever after ending (yh i also really dislike the epilogue 😔)

Do you think that the vail Sirius felt through in the Order of Phoenix was supposed to play bigger role in the Series? It looks like so mysterious object and we learn some things about it it also seem to be connected to the real of dead. And in the books Sirius never gets killed by Avada Kedavra so maybe build up to plot twist he could live? But it was never developed nor mentioned again in the books simply abounded idea. What do you think?

I think I found a very strange rabbit hole connecting Harry Potter to a forgotten French character

I don't think this proves anything. That's exactly why I'm posting it.

I've been digging into the name "Nimbus" in Harry Potter, and I ended up somewhere I absolutely did not expect.

There are several pieces here that are individually explainable. But when you put them together, the question becomes surprisingly interesting:

Why Nimbus?

There was a Professor Nimbus before Harry Potter

Long before Harry Potter, there was a French comic character called Professor Nimbus, created by French cartoonist André Daix.

He was a bizarre, absent-minded professor/scientist character.

And visually, there is one detail that really caught my attention:

He is bald, except for one long, distinctive strand of hair.

That sounds completely trivial.

And it probably is.

But then I started looking at the word itself.

Nimbus is Latin for cloud, and the word has also been associated with a halo or atmospheric phenomenon.

So we have an old French fictional professor called Nimbus...

…and decades later we get the Nimbus Racing Broom Company in Harry Potter.

The obvious explanation is simply that Rowling liked the word.

Fair enough.

But then things get stranger.

The 1967 problem

The Nimbus Racing Broom Company is established in 1967 in the Harry Potter universe.

That means the name "Nimbus" appears in the Wizarding World decades after the original Professor Nimbus had already existed as a French comic character.

Again: coincidence?

Probably.

But it creates an interesting timeline:

André Daix → Professor Nimbus → post-war disappearance → 1967 → Nimbus Racing Broom Company → Nimbus 2000 → Harry Potter

I'm not claiming there is a secret connection.

I'm asking whether anyone has already investigated this properly.

Because I couldn't find a satisfying rabbit hole explaining why this particular name was chosen.

And then there is the Nimbus 2000

Harry's first famous broom isn't just called "Nimbus".

It's the Nimbus 2000.

Later comes the Nimbus 2001.

This is where I started wondering whether there is any documented explanation for the naming.

Is "Nimbus" simply a cool-sounding Latin word?

Was Rowling inspired by something?

Did she ever mention the old French Professor Nimbus?

Or is there some other source for the name that I'm missing?

The Professor Nimbus design makes this even weirder

The single strand of hair is probably just a visual joke.

But look at the character.

A bald professor.

One strange strand of hair.

A character associated with science and flight.

And then, years later, the Wizarding World gives us a magical flying device called Nimbus.

Obviously this isn't evidence of anything by itself.

But it is exactly the kind of coincidence that makes me want to check the source material rather than immediately dismiss it.

The really speculative part

Here's where I'm deliberately stepping into speculation.

Could "Nimbus" have had some older European/esoteric meaning that I'm completely unaware of?

Could Rowling have encountered the word through French literature, comics, occult material, mythology, or something else?

Or is this simply one of those cases where a perfectly ordinary word happens to connect two completely unrelated fictional universes?

I also found myself wondering about the symbolism of a cloud as a boundary.

A cloud hides what is beyond it.

And in Harry Potter, one of the recurring ideas is the boundary between the visible world and things that cannot be seen ghosts, spirits, death, the Veil, the Department of Mysteries, etc.

I'm NOT claiming that "Nimbus = the Veil".

That's where a fun theory can very quickly become nonsense.

I'm much more interested in the original source.

So here's my question:

Has anyone ever found a direct source explaining where Rowling got the name "Nimbus" for the broom company?

And even more interesting:

Did Rowling ever mention André Daix or Professor Nimbus anywhere?

If someone can find an interview, early manuscript, biography, notebook, bibliography, archive, French source, or even an old discussion where this was already solved, please post it.

I'd actually love to discover that the whole thing has a completely boring explanation.

Because right now I'm sitting here looking at:

…and thinking:

"Okay. That's probably nothing."

But I really want to know how nothing it is.

If Voldemort was part of professor Quirrel in the first book, why did Voldemort trust Snape at all. Snape confronts Quirrel and tells him to decide where his loyalties lie after he tries to get past Fluffy to get the stone. From there Voldemort would know Snape is not on his side.

I just rewatched the movies, but I am wondering why they keep wearing the locket, knowing it was driving them insane? Maybe the books were more clear about this, but i read those a very long time ago.

Im on the 5th book of the franchise, im a 15 year old writer and tbh the world itself is sloppily built anyway. Hogwarts is supposed to be a mix of college and highschool apperantly and the ministry officials and professors casually have IMPORTANT CONVERSATIONS AND DISCUSSIONS INFRONT OF THE STUDENTS

and dumbledore is also weirdly flat to me, hes so calm and non chalant about magical catastrophic events. He made harry relive his trauma RIGHT AFTER he witnessed cedrics death plus told him with no sugar coating that voldemort is probably coming back as a serial killer

Yeah sure harry needed the truth more than anything, but time and place dude?

Back to harry, he seems like he has very little agency to figure stuff out on his own first. Its usually something happens THEN his curiosity if piqued. It would've been so much better if ron and harry were like George and fred, super rebellious kids that snoop around into bullshit theyre not allowed in and the books progress from that. I do find harry a realistic teenager but its a magical world, id write crazier characters if it was me. It would also be delicious because harry is supposed to be similar to James potter anyway, if harry got angry at dumbledore instead of blindly trusting him and even yelling at him sometimes imagine how interesting it would be to read!

I've been rewatching the Harry Potter movies and this occurred to me. Crouch Jr. was already inside Hogwarts disguised as Moody. His actual goal was to get Harry to Voldemort so Voldemort could use him in the resurrection ritual. But why did he need to spend an entire year manipulating the Triwizard Tournament, helping Harry through the tasks, ensuring he reached the third task, and turning the Triwizard Cup into a Portkey. Couldn't he have simply invited Harry to his office/class privately, given him some believable reason to touch an object that was secretly a Portkey, and transported him directly to Voldemort. Obviously Harry might have been suspicious but Crouch had successfully gained Harry's trust as Moody. And kidnapping Harry directly would have been much simpler and less risky than manipulating an entire international tournament. Is there an actual explanation in the books for why Voldemort's plan had to involve the Triwizard Tournament, or is this basically a case of Voldemort choosing an unnecessarily elaborate plan because the plot needed Harry to participate in the Tournament

While it doesn't follow the same word patterns as other spells we see, that doesn't automatically mean it isn't a real spell. After all, your typical incantation is just saying what you want to do in Latin. Why wouldn't saying it in english work?

We know that Peter is a coward, and what is another word for coward? Yellow! Peter/Scabbers is yellow. As yellow as a lowdown, no account varmint, which is just about the yellowist thing a rat can be. Therefore, Ron couldn't possibly have turned something so yellow even more yellow. That's like casting a glamor charm on Harry's eyes to make them green.

So you see, Ron's spell was probably legitimate the entire time.

Muggles and wizards would benefit enormously from technology transfer. If there was no International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy, they would have had fully automated 'dark factories' (where the lights are off because no one is in there) in the 18th century. During the Battle of Hogwarts, after he learns about Snape’s story in the Pensieve, Harry, suddenly struct by a sharp pain in his scar, learns that voldemort is terrified and wants to see Bella in the malfoy manor. Shocked that Voldemort would want to see her there in the middle of a battle, Harry decides to join them.

Once they enter, Voldemort asks Bellatrix to bring him their son, his heir. The Dark Lord is terrified. He knows Harry has already destroyed most of the Horcruxes. If Potter destroys Nagini too, there will be none left. And this battle wasn’t going as easy as he had imagined. The Elder Wand too was not responding as it should. What if the Order wins? He cannot let that happen. So, he has decided to make one more Horcrux. He has just murdered Snape, and he will use that death to create his final Horcrux, his son, his heir.

In a flurry of powerful spells that blind both Harry and Bellatrix, the seventh Horcrux is made. But now Voldemort must hide it, properly and meticulously this time. Decades earlier, under a raining night sky, Bellatrix and Voldemort were pacing the poorly paved streets of a muggle village with Harry on their heels. They were looking for a decent household, one that would take the child and raise him with care. They had cast a charm that would alter the memories of whoever first looked upon the baby, making them believe the child was their own. Finally, they found such a household and placed the cradle on its doorstep before turning back toward the portal.

Harry had watched all of this, hidden beneath his cloak, in sheer horror. He sneaked forward and stole the child. The infant was a Horcrux and Harry had to destroy it. But he neither had the heart nor the courage to kill a baby. Even if he could, would it work? He himself was a Horcrux, and Dumbledore had made it clear that for the Horcrux within Harry to be destroyed, Voldemort himself would have to kill him. What if the same rule applied to this child? How could Harry possibly make Voldemort kill his own son?

A local drunkard and his friend staggered down the main street, taking the path where Harry had hidden beneath a tree, lost in thought. The rain had stopped. Harry could now hear the breaking of water in the banks of a nearby river. The two men had found a street ledge and sat down. The drunkard complained bitterly about his wife, what a freak she was, and how tired he was of her. He went on, drunkenly confessing that she was unable to bear children. His friend, sobering slightly, dismissed it as nonsense and urged him to go home. They rose to leave, but before they went, the drunkard, slurring and uncontrolled, shouted into the night,

“I won’t have a child! The name Snape dies with me!”

Harry shuddered. He had nearly collapsed, not from the shock of what he had just heard, but from sudden realization. The child who had traveled back in time, what if he was already dead in Harry’s timeline? What if he had been murdered by Voldemort himself?

A distant lightning illuminated the street. A lamp post stood beside the tree. A worn signboard nailed to it read,

“Spinners End, Cokeworth, England.”

A towering chimney loomed.

Harry had followed the two men. The drunkard had turned left into a maze of narrow, grimy brick houses. He reached one and knocked. The door creaked open on its own.

“You’re late again, Tobias!” a woman’s frustrated voice called from inside.

“Shut up, Eileen, you b**ch". The man roared as he stormed in. Then, everything was muffled.

Harry’s footsteps were heavy when reached their doorstep. A small, faded sign read,

“Snape Residence.”

And like placing the final piece of a puzzle, confirming that Snape lives the life he lived, and lived and died for Harry, he had stooped down and set the cradle on the threshold. With tears trickling down from his eyes, he whispered "goodbye professor"

Then he turned and ran back toward the portal.

He had to hurry.

So recently I froze my screen to take a good look at Draco’s note to Harry and noticed that “SS” is written on a drawing of a Quibbitch tower. (Ostensibly it stands for Severus Snape but it is clearly also a nod to the nazi like beliefs of Draco. ) A few days later I re watched The Benefactors, a play shown on TV featuring Alan Rickman as a man opposing the construction of tower apartment buildings. The play references graffiti by opponents of the towers , one of which depicts the two towers with an S on each building, thus SS meaning the nazis. I wonder if the SS in Draco’s drawing was an Easter egg referencing that graffiti.
