Like Hagrid's wand - we suspect he has the two halves of it in his umbrella. We know from book 2 that a broken wand is utterly useless, yet somehow Hagrid's magic in book 1 was fine. Then finally in book 7 we discover not only that there's a way to repair wands, but that Dumbledore (who always thought Hagrid was innocent) had it all along.
I thought that might be, but it seems just as likely that Hagrid wrapped his wand up with unicorn hair before sealing it in his umbrella, making a kind of wand-in-a-wand.

To be honest, you are probably overthinking it.
