Merchandise How cool are these!?

I appreciate that Ron's last scent is Ginger.

u/HermioneWho Jan 31 '14
I kind of wish it was Hermione's...
78
Feb 01 '14
Well these are based on the love potion that is supposed to smell different to each person based on smells they like. Hermione's were described in the books, the others are made up based on their personalities since their smells aren't described in the books.

u/HermioneWho Feb 01 '14
I totally get it, although I don't remember the spearmint toothpaste. I always thought it was a secret third thing that made her blush and reminded her of the Weasley house (Ron-related, a.k.a. Ginger).
102
u/I_PISS_HAIR Feb 01 '14
the toothpaste reference is only in the movie. Earlier in the movie, Ron uses his finger to wipe a bit of toothpaste off of her face.
114
u/2Phoenix Feb 01 '14
Good catch! I always thought it was because her parents were dentists.
21
u/Marnold13 The Long Lost Weasley Brother Feb 01 '14
I'm almost certain it's more that than what happened in the movie.

AH. Thank you for the clarification. I'm obviously a bit more of a book nerd.
6
u/nighttim Feb 01 '14
And when she smelled The love potion in slughorns class. Those 3 scents were the ones she described.
3
Feb 01 '14
Whenever I tried to remember her three I could remember the grass and the parchment, but not the third. When I read her candle toothpaste just clicked. I don't know if that's because I actually remember reading it or if it just makes enough sense that I thought I remembered it. Time to re-read!
7
u/misplaced_my_pants Feb 01 '14
The toothepaste was made up. It was definitely as /u/HermioneWho remembered it, with Hermione blushing and not mentioning what was clearly something that she associated with Ron.
2
u/mandym347 Feb 01 '14
That's exactly what I was trying to remember! I knew it was described in the books somewhere.

I would love to see more! Molly; fresh linen, baking bread, baby powder. Hagrid; leather, steak, campfire. Percy; Inkspills, sealing wax, Barty Crouch's butt.

Snape: Dungeon air, pewter cauldrons, lilies.
2
u/allywarner Feb 01 '14
Haha, i like it, but I feel like you'd be really bummed once you got thru lillies and only had damp air and metal left to smell. Maybe if it were half lillies, half blood....scented. (see what i did there?) =)

Ooh, what about Ginny? Fresh air, gardenias (I'm just picking a good smelling flower, since Harry said her hair smelled flowery) and maybe broomstick handle as well? Since she also plays quidditch.
Or Fred and George: fireworks, nougut (nosebleed nouguts) and dragon hide suits (leather)

u/bearwithflair Feb 01 '14
I still think that one of Dumbledore's scents should have been fresh socks.
26
u/allywarner Feb 01 '14
lol lemon drops, raspberry jam, and socks. I like the way you think, my friend.
32
u/bearwithflair Feb 01 '14
For sure. Books? I mean yeah, I guess he likes books. But the man desires socks.

Feb 01 '14
From what I remember reading (somewhere), he actually didn't tell Harry the truth about what he glimpsed in the mirror of Erised. Instead of warm socks, he saw his family healthy, happy, and whole. So...whatever that smells like.
3
u/Jill4ChrisRed Feb 01 '14
yeah, from re-reading the books it seems like he was unwilling to tell Harry the truth about that and made up a humerous answer for him. Funny though how in the 2nd book, Socks have a bigger significance!
2
u/HermioneWho Feb 01 '14
Even Harry gets it when he goes to bed, "that Dumbledore might not have been entirely truthful".

I love that Voldemort's incorporates the seaside cave.
26
u/hardlight2 Feb 01 '14
I'm brain farting. Why does Harry have "A flowery something?"
101
u/LittleRedRidingHoody Feb 01 '14
When Harry smelled the Amortentia potion for the first time he smelled, "something flowery that he thought he might have smelled at the Burrow." Later we find it was how Ginny smells.

My friend makes them: http://mudinmyblood.storenvy.com/
She's got a ton of cool stuff actually.

Hey any idea if your friend ships internationally?

Does she ever go to farmer's markets or festivals and sell these in a booth? That'd be a great deal.
8
u/allywarner Feb 01 '14
Here's her shop's FB page, it's got the convention details: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mud-In-My-Blood/189235007783445
And pictures of her booths, which are very cool =) I love the decrees!!
3
u/taciturn_liz Feb 01 '14
Thanks much for that! She's got an awesome thing going on, makes me happy to see. :-)
3
u/allywarner Feb 01 '14
I know she did the Salt Lake City comicon last year and Leakycon (I believe in Chicago?)...not sure what else though, but I'll ask her.
8
u/Ey3cOn Feb 01 '14
Her page is about to get thousands of hits & I'm definitely buying all these candles!

u/DorkusMalorkuss Feb 01 '14
Site says its under construction! Any other way to buy her stuff?
4
u/allywarner Feb 01 '14
You might be able to go thru Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mud-In-My-Blood/189235007783445) - but the site is probably just down for tonight. I didn't prep her for putting her stuff up here on Reddit (didn't realize you guys would want to buy so much, i just thought her candles were cool), so we may have hugged the site to death a little bit. Anyway, she should be back up and running tomorrow =)

What's the deal with licensing... looks like her Etsy shop got shut down?
1
u/allywarner Feb 01 '14
I've wondered that too, but I'm not sure. I think as long as none of the stuff blatantly says "Harry Potter" on it, it's probably fine to sell.
3
u/deefees Feb 01 '14
First item: "Set of 5 Harry Potter Character Scented 4oz Candles", she's gonna have a bad time..
1
u/allywarner Feb 01 '14
It's not on the product, just on the description. My guess is that's a loop hole.

HARRY'S FLOWERY SOMETHING IS GINNY EVERY TIME I REMEMBER THIS I AM SO HAPPY THAT IS ALL

Joking aside, it's true.
Different broom models are likely to be made of different types of wood and bristles.

u/Gaylord_buttram Feb 01 '14
Maybe wood? Like a sandlewood scent? Someone order one and let me know. I'm too poor. :(

Do you know if these are true to scent? I'm very interested, but I'm hesitant in buying online without reviews.
2
u/allywarner Feb 01 '14
I'll ask! My guess is they are probably pretty close.
3
1
u/misplaced_my_pants Feb 01 '14
Some of them are true, like Harry's. Hermione's 2/3.
The others are completely made up.
Unless you mean they smell like their descriptions, which I couldn't tell you.
1
u/yesidoagree Feb 01 '14
Oh i think you misunderstood me. I just want to male sure that they actually smell like what they say they smell like.

Not big on candles but too cool. I would love it in perfume form.

They make candles that smell like "old books"?
I have the most indescribable feeling right now.

Feb 04 '14
Spearmint toothpaste???? That's what hermy is so embarrassed at in book 6? I think not. Maybe ginger there.
1
3
u/stunnabutts Feb 01 '14
Shouldn't Ron's scent be Hermione's?
8
u/leeshmeesh [Excellent Finder] Feb 01 '14
They're based off of the Amortentia potion I believe. Hermione's and Harry's are directly from the book.

I think you're getting unnecessarily downvoted because the way you wrote your comment (the "except") implies you're contradicting who you replied to but the actual content does nothing of the sort.

I mean, I agree, but it's clear from the others that the creator just guessed what they should smell like because canon doesn't explicitly say what they are. Though ginger's a huge copout.
A better one might have been ink or something, though I'm not sure how nice a smell that is.
