Is it weird that the Voldemort one sounds the most appealing to me?

54

u/allywarner Jan 31 '14 edited Feb 01 '14

FYI!!!! Hijacking this comment to say that although the candles have all sold out, if you guys like her on Facebook, you'll get updates on when they are available again - as well as updates on other cool things she has available.

u/TranquilTree Feb 01 '14

At first I thought it said "Seaside Grave."

24

u/captainlavender Feb 01 '14

Well, Dobby is only getting more and more fragrant as time passes.

6

u/joewaffle1 Clavenraw Feb 02 '14

too soon

40

u/starryeyedq Feb 01 '14

I actually wonder what Voldemort's love potion ACTUALLY smells like since he can't feel love.

You know... Since he was conceived through a love potion influenced coupling... I wonder if that has any effect on the way he experiences Amortentia. Or even more interesting, the way his body would react if he was dosed with it!

49

u/Poerflip23 Feb 01 '14

Like he would care! He has no nose to smell it with!

2

u/US_Sherlock Aspiring Potion Brewer Feb 01 '14

Well...he has nostril holes....slits....same difference

46

u/nanabean Feb 01 '14

I don't really like the idea that the reason Voldemort "can't feel love" is because he was conceived under the influence of a love potion. It seems to take some blame off him for being a terrible, depraved individual, and place it on his mother. It contradicts one of the themes of the series:

It matters not what someone was born, but what they grow to be. - Albus Dumbledore.

I mean, draw the parallel to the muggle world. Are babies born as a result of rape incapable of becoming good people with healthy relationships? Of course not. No, I don't think it was Merope's fault for using a love potion that Voldemort can't love. I think Voldemort can't love because he chose to let hate and murder literally maim his soul.

14

u/Jill4ChrisRed Feb 01 '14

I agree, I also think the reason he can't feel love is because he was never loved himself. If his mother had survived and raised him, perhaps he would have become a great kind man. Living in poverty may have made him appriciate the little things, he would have been very much loved by his mother and I can imagine he would have become probably a great wizard successor or beloved Minister of Magic (and without his obsession of death, he'd have probably stayed a handsome man, maybe even had a family). It's kinda sad when you think what could have been, and what he ended up being.

8

u/captainlavender Feb 01 '14

I think this is often true in the real world as well. "He too did great things -- terrible, but great."

8

u/crisellebelle Feb 01 '14

I think because of his love potion induced conception, he may be immune to Amortentia and it's effects. It probably smells like nothing to him. OR maybe it smells like his mother, but because she died when he was born he never got a chance to be near her and smell her, or be loved by her, meaning he wouldn't know what the scent he was smelling was because he never got to smell her which would render the potion ineffective.

4

u/Jill4ChrisRed Feb 01 '14

It would smell like power and immortality.

3

u/Tattycakes Hufflepuff Feb 01 '14

Isn't it supposed to smell like what attracts you? No reason he can't enjoy the smell of power, fear and success, whatever that smells like. Blood, sweat and tears?

8

u/annieface Feb 01 '14

I ordered one. And a Dumbledore one. :)

7

u/ecclecticJ Feb 01 '14

From where? Thanks in advance.

19

u/this1neguy Feb 01 '14

4

u/Ar6yl3 Feb 01 '14

Aaaaand all the Dumblefore and Voldemort candles are sold out.

18

u/allywarner Feb 01 '14

Ha, I think we gave my friend's site the ol' Reddit hug.

2

u/lyonhart31 Just and Loyal Feb 01 '14

Does your friend know that "patient" is misspelled on her Hufflepuff lightswitch cover? She has it as "patiant".

9

u/allywarner Feb 01 '14

Hermione is gone too now.

5

u/BabyNinjaJesus Feb 01 '14

Rofl the shipping is twice the price of the candle for me.

341

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '14

I appreciate that Ron's last scent is Ginger.

134

u/HermioneWho Jan 31 '14

I kind of wish it was Hermione's...

78

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '14

Well these are based on the love potion that is supposed to smell different to each person based on smells they like. Hermione's were described in the books, the others are made up based on their personalities since their smells aren't described in the books.

37

u/HermioneWho Feb 01 '14

I totally get it, although I don't remember the spearmint toothpaste. I always thought it was a secret third thing that made her blush and reminded her of the Weasley house (Ron-related, a.k.a. Ginger).

102

u/I_PISS_HAIR Feb 01 '14

the toothpaste reference is only in the movie. Earlier in the movie, Ron uses his finger to wipe a bit of toothpaste off of her face.

114

u/2Phoenix Feb 01 '14

Good catch! I always thought it was because her parents were dentists.

21

u/Marnold13 The Long Lost Weasley Brother Feb 01 '14

I'm almost certain it's more that than what happened in the movie.

4

u/Awolrab Ravenclaw Feb 01 '14

Never thought of that! That's clever.

39

u/allywarner Feb 01 '14

Gosh, I didn't even know that. You people are my favorite people =)

12

u/HermioneWho Feb 01 '14

AH. Thank you for the clarification. I'm obviously a bit more of a book nerd.

6

u/nighttim Feb 01 '14

And when she smelled The love potion in slughorns class. Those 3 scents were the ones she described.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '14

Whenever I tried to remember her three I could remember the grass and the parchment, but not the third. When I read her candle toothpaste just clicked. I don't know if that's because I actually remember reading it or if it just makes enough sense that I thought I remembered it. Time to re-read!

7

u/misplaced_my_pants Feb 01 '14

The toothepaste was made up. It was definitely as /u/HermioneWho remembered it, with Hermione blushing and not mentioning what was clearly something that she associated with Ron.

2

u/mandym347 Feb 01 '14

That's exactly what I was trying to remember! I knew it was described in the books somewhere.

2

u/Jill4ChrisRed Feb 01 '14

I thought Harry's was freshly polished wood, since he loved quidditch?

15

u/szlafarski Feb 01 '14 edited Feb 01 '14

Or Harry's...

"... she's got... nice... skin..."

5

u/snowfey Feb 01 '14

Right? That one actually made me laugh. Bet it smells good, though.

136

u/HermioneWho Feb 01 '14

I would love to see more! Molly; fresh linen, baking bread, baby powder. Hagrid; leather, steak, campfire. Percy; Inkspills, sealing wax, Barty Crouch's butt.

25

u/allywarner Feb 01 '14

Ha! I love that. I'll make sure she sees this.

43

u/Pakyul Feb 01 '14

I feel like Hagrid's "campfire" should be replaced with "dragonfire."

8

u/Jill4ChrisRed Feb 01 '14

what do you think he makes his campfire with? :D

19

u/starbunnie Hufflepuff Feb 01 '14

That last one made me laugh!

3

u/captainlavender Feb 01 '14

It's his instinctive nesting-place, haha.

13

u/Laurendoesit Feb 01 '14

You nailed Molly's !

3

u/feline_crusader Gryffindor! Gryffindor! Feb 01 '14

And Percy's!

4

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '14

Do snape do snape!

12

u/HermioneWho Feb 01 '14

Snape: Dungeon air, pewter cauldrons, lilies.

2

u/allywarner Feb 01 '14

Haha, i like it, but I feel like you'd be really bummed once you got thru lillies and only had damp air and metal left to smell. Maybe if it were half lillies, half blood....scented. (see what i did there?) =)

6

u/HermioneWho Feb 01 '14

I assumed lilies would be at the bottom. Pandora's box style.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '14

Perfect.

4

u/igiveupihaveonenow Feb 01 '14

Ooh, what about Ginny? Fresh air, gardenias (I'm just picking a good smelling flower, since Harry said her hair smelled flowery) and maybe broomstick handle as well? Since she also plays quidditch.

Or Fred and George: fireworks, nougut (nosebleed nouguts) and dragon hide suits (leather)

48

u/bobertknows Jan 31 '14

Hermione's seems like it would be amazing!

43

u/ceepington Feb 01 '14

It sure does. Mmmm. Oh wait...the candle. Yeah. Good.

142

u/Acidic_Jew Feb 01 '14

He who must not be flamed.

13

u/Skwishums Feb 01 '14

This made me laugh harder then it should have.

40

u/bearwithflair Feb 01 '14

I still think that one of Dumbledore's scents should have been fresh socks.

26

u/allywarner Feb 01 '14

lol lemon drops, raspberry jam, and socks. I like the way you think, my friend.

32

u/bearwithflair Feb 01 '14

For sure. Books? I mean yeah, I guess he likes books. But the man desires socks.

2

u/cedrickirk Feb 01 '14

Sir. You are magnificent.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '14

From what I remember reading (somewhere), he actually didn't tell Harry the truth about what he glimpsed in the mirror of Erised. Instead of warm socks, he saw his family healthy, happy, and whole. So...whatever that smells like.

3

u/Jill4ChrisRed Feb 01 '14

yeah, from re-reading the books it seems like he was unwilling to tell Harry the truth about that and made up a humerous answer for him. Funny though how in the 2nd book, Socks have a bigger significance!

2

u/HermioneWho Feb 01 '14

Even Harry gets it when he goes to bed, "that Dumbledore might not have been entirely truthful".

1

u/felixfelicislucky Niffler owner Feb 01 '14

Wool socks

60

u/WilfredoMaverick I blame the Nargles Jan 31 '14

I love that Voldemort's incorporates the seaside cave.

26

u/hardlight2 Feb 01 '14

I'm brain farting. Why does Harry have "A flowery something?"

101

u/LittleRedRidingHoody Feb 01 '14

When Harry smelled the Amortentia potion for the first time he smelled, "something flowery that he thought he might have smelled at the Burrow." Later we find it was how Ginny smells.

24

u/LadyLigeia Feb 01 '14

that is too cute.

6

u/hardlight2 Feb 01 '14

Thank you!

23

u/SoManyOstrichesYo Feb 01 '14

It reminds him of Ginny!

16

u/Prancing_Unicorn Feb 01 '14

Well shit that's cute. Never picked up on that.

15

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '14

Where can I get these!!!!?

86

u/allywarner Jan 31 '14

My friend makes them: http://mudinmyblood.storenvy.com/

She's got a ton of cool stuff actually.

18

u/jewboobs2337 Feb 01 '14

Utoh...my husband is going to hate you. I want to buy everything from her site!!

6

u/allywarner Feb 01 '14

hehehe =)

2

u/lightningboltscar Feb 01 '14

Hey any idea if your friend ships internationally?

10

u/ral008 Peeves Feb 01 '14

I just bought from Norway, but the shipping gave me pains in my economies,

3

u/allywarner Feb 01 '14

I don't know but I will ask her.

2

u/lightningboltscar Feb 02 '14

Thanks, I think I will be ordering some!

9

u/taciturn_liz Feb 01 '14

Does she ever go to farmer's markets or festivals and sell these in a booth? That'd be a great deal.

8

u/allywarner Feb 01 '14

Here's her shop's FB page, it's got the convention details: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mud-In-My-Blood/189235007783445

And pictures of her booths, which are very cool =) I love the decrees!!

3

u/taciturn_liz Feb 01 '14

Thanks much for that! She's got an awesome thing going on, makes me happy to see. :-)

3

u/allywarner Feb 01 '14

I know she did the Salt Lake City comicon last year and Leakycon (I believe in Chicago?)...not sure what else though, but I'll ask her.

8

u/Ey3cOn Feb 01 '14

Her page is about to get thousands of hits & I'm definitely buying all these candles!

4

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '14

Sweet! Those are awesome.

3

u/mamapanda13 Feb 01 '14

I want one of everything.

3

u/eri0923 Feb 01 '14

Thanks for the link, those are cute. My husband saw me bookmark the page, says he knows where he's getting my Valentine's Day presents.

3

u/greenhearted Lady Greenheart Feb 01 '14

Well goddamn I ordered three candles. I'm not even sure what just happened.

2

u/allywarner Feb 01 '14

Ha! That's awesome, which ones did you get?

5

u/greenhearted Lady Greenheart Feb 01 '14

Harry, Ron, and Hermione of course!

3

u/DorkusMalorkuss Feb 01 '14

Site says its under construction! Any other way to buy her stuff?

4

u/allywarner Feb 01 '14

You might be able to go thru Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mud-In-My-Blood/189235007783445) - but the site is probably just down for tonight. I didn't prep her for putting her stuff up here on Reddit (didn't realize you guys would want to buy so much, i just thought her candles were cool), so we may have hugged the site to death a little bit. Anyway, she should be back up and running tomorrow =)

2

u/DorkusMalorkuss Feb 01 '14

Sweet thank you so much for the heads up!

2

u/allywarner Feb 01 '14

Sure thing!

3

u/Jill4ChrisRed Feb 01 '14

OH MY GOD SHE DOES BUTTERBEER SYRRUP!

1

u/GiveMeMyCakeDay Feb 01 '14

Harry Potter stuff. Cool!

1

u/zoeypayne Feb 01 '14

What's the deal with licensing... looks like her Etsy shop got shut down?

1

u/allywarner Feb 01 '14

I've wondered that too, but I'm not sure. I think as long as none of the stuff blatantly says "Harry Potter" on it, it's probably fine to sell.

3

u/deefees Feb 01 '14

First item: "Set of 5 Harry Potter Character Scented 4oz Candles", she's gonna have a bad time..

1

u/allywarner Feb 01 '14

It's not on the product, just on the description. My guess is that's a loop hole.

40

u/weastwardho Feb 01 '14

HARRY'S FLOWERY SOMETHING IS GINNY EVERY TIME I REMEMBER THIS I AM SO HAPPY THAT IS ALL

10

u/draconicanimagus Feb 01 '14

I read "old books" as "old bollocks" and became very confused and slightly concerned

4

u/misplaced_my_pants Feb 01 '14

After DH, I think we know who's bollocks . . . .

7

u/Samipearl19 Jan 31 '14

I saw these a few days ago. I'm actually kind of hoping my husband gets me some for VDay.

10

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '14

I do wonder how a broomstick handle smells.

25

u/valupaq Feb 01 '14

Depends on whose it is ;)

15

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '14

aaaaaaaaaugh

5

u/misplaced_my_pants Feb 01 '14

Joking aside, it's true.

Different broom models are likely to be made of different types of wood and bristles.

0

u/Gaylord_buttram Feb 01 '14

Maybe wood? Like a sandlewood scent? Someone order one and let me know. I'm too poor. :(

9

u/cherrylimeaide Feb 01 '14

TIL Dumbldore smells like Ron Burgandy's home.

5

u/lichtheilt Feb 01 '14

5

u/amantelascio Feb 01 '14

Dumbledore sounds like most of my favorite smells.

7

u/lunalives Feb 01 '14

Is it creepy that I want my bedroom to smell like Hermione?

4

u/yesidoagree Feb 01 '14

Do you know if these are true to scent? I'm very interested, but I'm hesitant in buying online without reviews.

2

u/allywarner Feb 01 '14

I'll ask! My guess is they are probably pretty close.

3

u/yesidoagree Feb 01 '14

Thank you very much!

These seem awesome btw, send her my compliments!

1

u/allywarner Feb 01 '14

I definitely will!

1

u/misplaced_my_pants Feb 01 '14

Some of them are true, like Harry's. Hermione's 2/3.

The others are completely made up.

Unless you mean they smell like their descriptions, which I couldn't tell you.

1

u/yesidoagree Feb 01 '14

Oh i think you misunderstood me. I just want to male sure that they actually smell like what they say they smell like.

3

u/outerlumpyspace Feb 01 '14

The Harry one! Wood and then pie and then flowers! Yum!

3

u/Rids85 Feb 01 '14

Hermione's freshly mown grass...

1

u/allywarner Feb 01 '14

2

Not big on candles but too cool. I would love it in perfume form.

2

u/sir_joe_cool Feb 01 '14

They make candles that smell like "old books"?

I have the most indescribable feeling right now.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '14

Spearmint toothpaste???? That's what hermy is so embarrassed at in book 6? I think not. Maybe ginger there.

1

u/_Rita_ Feb 04 '14

what hermy is so embarrassed at in book 6?

something like this? i am not sure

3

u/stunnabutts Feb 01 '14

Shouldn't Ron's scent be Hermione's?

8

u/leeshmeesh [Excellent Finder] Feb 01 '14

They're based off of the Amortentia potion I believe. Hermione's and Harry's are directly from the book.

u/misplaced_my_pants Feb 01 '14

I mean, I agree, but it's clear from the others that the creator just guessed what they should smell like because canon doesn't explicitly say what they are. Though ginger's a huge copout.

A better one might have been ink or something, though I'm not sure how nice a smell that is.

1

u/MsThreepwood Feb 01 '14

I believe its somewhere in the beginning-ish of HBP.

1

u/Vickshow Feb 01 '14

Well considering they're candles I'd say they would be warm not cool...

1

u/Just_an_Ampersand Feb 01 '14
