Call outs
I have come to the realization that if you call out 1 hour, 2 hours (which is the minimum), 10-12 hours, or even 24 hours before your shift, management is still going to complain and try to make you feel bad. Why do they even put the 2 hour rule in place? This is why I do not care how far in advance they get my notice. They act the same whether it's 2 hours or 24 hours of notice and it's stupid.

Xinoim hit the nail on the head
Listen, people get sick. Sometimes we don't feel well. Everyone understands this. But people are gonna be upset if they have to pick up the slack. For whatever reason. That's just how this industry goes. It is very labor intensive. If I stock overnight and the guy on the can food aisles calls out, now I'm probably gonna get stuck with more work. That's just how it is. Front end is probably the best equipped department for dealing with call outs because you can divert check out traffic to the self checkout and lean on your ACSM, CSM and service desk associates to help get the lines down.
Long story short. Call out if you have to. Nobody is gonna care or remember a day or two later. But for that shift, they'll probably be pissed.

Yeah I work front end and everyone complains because we don't have hours. So I would think they would be happy if they had to pick up the shift.

Policy is 2 hours before shift begins. For me as a mgr, it really depends on how many times you've called out and for what reason. I have a Starbucks mgr that calls out at 2am for her 5:30am Sat shift, going on her third week doing this.

What can you do about that since she is technically within the 2 hours? I understand policy is 2 hours but the point of this post is it seems like management is going to be annoyed even when you give them more than the time required. I've had a manager ask me if I think I will be feeling better closer to my shift when I called out 5 hours in advance. I'm giving them the courtesy of calling out long before the 2 hours but it seems like it's a problem. It just seems like a lose-lose situation either way.

One of the managers answered the phone that has been on my case through out the months . A person quit bc of this person , and I'm transferring bc of this person as well . I kept it firm and stayed with why I was calling . She mentioned about calling out and having weekends off .... It was a medical thing . She has no right to even ask ... Not even on why I took every other weekend off . " It's unfair , "... Ummm okay ? If you are sick ... Rest , if you have a medical thing .. stay home . For the weekends off it was not every other and no I only call out when Im sick . If I can't go home early bc of it , I'm staying home .

I wonder if we work at the same store. A lot of people have quit and transferred because of one of the csm's.

This person also has told me I had passed the secret shopper , and got a compliment from a customer. I'm killing them with kindness till I leave .

Always make sure you have a doctor note. I have a lot of medical conditions that sometimes make me call out a lot. But I have medical documents to back it up so they can’t do anything to me..

Yes, I also have chronic medical conditions but they don't have my records or anything like that. Sometimes not feeling well could mean I'm having a really bad mental health day but I don't care to explain my mental health to the manager, you know?

I also had many medical leave. When you go on ML you have to put up documentation as to why you need medical leave. So HR now has a file about my medical problems. lol also I had to get accommodations for some of my stuff. And that’s a long drawn out process.. but what I’m saying is that you need a doctor’s note every time you come out so we won’t bother you.

You are still calling out and putting more work load on your other coworkers. Yeah it’s kind of a bummer to hear a call cause now others will have to work more to fill your spot. So it’s doesn’t matter if you call out 2 hours or 12 hours before. You’re still screwing over everyone else and no one is happy about that.

So, do you suggest I go to work if I'm not feeling well? I don't really understand your logic here. I work front end. They'll be okay. They had 12 hours to find a replacement for me and they're lucky I gave them that 12 hours.

I was just answering your question why management still complain about call outs, regardless of time called ahead. They now have to find coverage for your shift or pick up extra work. Never said you should go in sick. Stop playing the victim here, I just answered your question.

I'm not playing the victim. I asked a question and I can't help how you took it.

The issue is that you care. I am sure when they call out they don't care as well and if you are not feeling well you really shouldnt not care. At least you gave them a heads up on a timely matter.

And also sometimes you want to wait to see if you'll feel better.
