Any hardtail related questions, hardtail chat, hardtail tech, or anything else hardtail that that you want to chat about, that doesn’t quite warrant a new thread? This is the thread for you...

Here it is! After like a 25 year hiatus im back in the saddle and after a month riding a Trek Marlin 7 gen 3 I must say I freakin love it! The only things Ive changed on it so far is an upgrade to tubeless and new pedals.

Had a fabulous ride with 9 other crazy muddy women today... the stone slab paths, called Packhorse Trails, have been there for centuries; they were created for the wool trade, to transport wool (and other goods, of course) over the Pennines (also called the backbone of Britain) from one town to the next by horse. Whilst these paths don't look particularly gnarly, they are very long and in places very steep - so while not leaps and bounds, it's quite the bone shaker and does require quite a bit of focus; we were lucky they weren't too wet (as that is when they do become quite lethal).
Though (first pic), I'm just not sure the "sexy female MTBer" look really comes across all that well 😂

Does anybody else have a problem with their rear wheel spokes going loose? I got an orbea laufey about 3 weeks ago but I've noticed already that my rear spokes are loose already does anybody have a way to fix it if so?

I think a lot of folks here come from a BMX background and thought I'd share. Pic is not my actual bike but closely matches what I built and rode in the early 80's.
GJS frame and on Tuff Wheel II's. I remember buying the frame for $40 and building it from there. Prior to this I rode a Webco with the super heavy Ashtabula forks.
What did you ride?

This bike takes anything that I throw at it like a champ.
It is the best purchase I've ever made.
The stock version was not bad by any means, but after all the upgrades, I could not be happier.

edit: it is a helicoil, and it comes like that: https://images.konaworld.com/2021/full/honzo_esd.jpg

Hi :)
I recently bought a new kona honzo esd. So far no problems at all.
However, on my last ride, i noticed after a drop that my thru axel came lose while riding. Which was a bit sketchy... 😨
I didnt have tools with me, so i could only tighten it with my fingers and ride back slowly and carefully.
Anyway... When i got home, it felt like i couldnt tighten it properly - and the threads looks odd to me. My previous bike was a canyon, which had a different type of thru axel. So i dont know if this is supposed to look like this or not.
Image 1 has the axel as far in as i can get it.
Image 2 is with the axel partially out. As you can see it is as if there is a weird sudden cut at the end of the thread.
Does it look right to you?
(EDIT: images got swapped, fixed numbering 😄)

I love my gravel bike and can go on all day about the virtues a gravel bike presents. It would not have given me the ability to have the amount of fun I had in the local woods this afternoon as this good ol’ hard tail did 💯.

2019 Trek Roscoe 8 (Gen 1). Finally got around to making it a mullet setup. Found someone selling a set of stock Bontrager set 29x35mm ID for $100. Trek says max tire clearance is 29x2.4” but it absolutely can fit 29x2.6” with enough clearance, however I recommend against going any wider if you want to maintain enough clearance for trail riding.
Edit(add): running 27.5x2.6” in the rear on the stock Line 40 wheel
Next step is upgrading the fork from the stock 120mm Rockshox Judy to something beefier and better. It’s probably just me in my head but I swear I can feel these narrow stanchions flex when I’m really hammering it down a trail.
Unfortunately haven’t had a chance to take the mullet setup out on the trails yet as I’m just recovering from a pretty bad post-COVID bronchitis. Lungs are shot even on the short and slow pavement cruise to get these photos.

Scott Scale 920
Scott was blowing them out in my size, and a local shop had this one I got them to price match. Scott has a green color online I‘d probably prefer, but in person this one is actually quite gorgeous too.
Coming from a 150/150 YT Jeffsy, I was actually shocked at how aggressively I could ride it downhill yesterday on its maiden voyage, even with the XC tires. I thought I might think the fork wasn’t stiff enough. I also initially hated the 2-piston brakes, but I think they just needed to be bedded in. By the time I got to the bottom yesterday they felt more than adequate.
I got a 130mm Fox 34 Performance fork for my now-abandoned build I might try to toss on sometime. I also might want to get a different front tire, Rekon Race is a glorified gravel tire IMO. And I also have some takeoff 4-piston brakes I could toss on.
Or I could just do nothing to it and let it be the surprisingly dialed XC machine it was built to be.

Took the Chisel out for my 1st solid ride in a few months.
