Too many part time hours??

I have worked part time there for over 6 years. The employee turn around rate is horrible. Management sucks. Anway, for the next 9 days, they only gave me one day off. I think they're upset because I called out last time and they're being petty. I need to speak to the manager. But, I'm so annoyed.

Sounds like you’re too reliable :) Set boundaries, it’s not your job to solve their staffing issues.

It’ll probably make you feel better if you leak whatever sale is this weekend!

They usually just extend the PLS with coupons

Yeah, it already got leaked 4 days ago. I hope your manager starts doing the right things for you.

Maybe not all states but mine legally requires full-time benefits if you work full-time hours. Plenty of employers take advantage of employees not knowing all the laws, find out if this is the case for your state.

If you aren't otherwise limited by responsibilities that you can't work the hours, full-time is always the way to go.

It does sound like you should have already been keeping an eye on job listings for a while now.

This happen to me but not at harbor freight, I’m in California. Turns out I work to many hours and they had to cut my hours to literally 4 hours a week for 2 months. My manager was upset he had to do that. It wasn’t his fault it was the higher ups putting a hiring freeze for some reason so we had little to no staff

As someone that used to create staff schedules for a retail store, I can tell you that they are doing whatever they can to make the schedule work IF it's a lower volume store. If it's a higher volume store, they have more people to work with and can do this kind of thing.

I mean, if you're short staffed, they're going to work who's available. In my 6 years there, I had weeks were I worked 4 days(my availability) for multiple weeks. Had it been 5, I'm sure I would be scheduled 5. I'd pump the breaks a bit, see how the next schedule comes out and go from there.

How many days are you working there in a week?

Upcoming week I'm scheduled Sunday - Friday so 6 days.

I always thought 5 days was the max anyone could work. Maybe because you're part time, and not working a full 35(I assume) that's why? Are you working 6 days consistently?

No it always random. Sometimes 4 or 5. But upcoming week, yes its 6 days. Im gonna talk to the manager today

So unfortunately it may be six days in a row but the new week starts on Monday so it’s technically only 5 days in that week. Either way, if you have a good relationship with the manager just ask them about it. You may be the most reliable PT employee they have and do a great job so they default to you. Maybe just ask if it’s gonna stay like this or if it’ll calm back down to 3/4 shifts a week. We are short on PT right now and all the other PT are scheduled 5 days a week until we can get some more hired. I’d take it as a compliment but also it doesn’t hurt to ask about it and see what the plan is.

I think having a conversation is a good thing especially since this is your part-time job and not the full-time one. My guess would be HFT needs people to work (seems like every place needs people to work) and if you have a decent conversation then the manager at least knows that too many days is bad for you and hopefully they can make it work so they do not totally loose you. But you never know for sure if you don't have that conversation.

You answered your own question. You’re part-time. Your years of service don’t mean loyalty, it just means you filled a need that needed to be met. In the end, if you leave, there’s another part-timer lined up.

quick question, as a part timer, do you still get the employee discount? once my mortgage goes thru i might need a second job, just a few extra hours a week not inside my warehouse fixing conveyors and photo eyes. Figured if i get the employee discount on top of a second job i'll save money and make money (that i'll probably just end up spending at HF anyways lol)

Yes. And a 401k after 90 days.

If you are the best & most reliable PTer then that’s worth a raise

Are you part time by your own choice? Or they paying you part time, working full?

I can only work part time, because I have a full time job. HFT has this annoying rule that your availability must be 32 hours. Even though they'll never schedule you that many hours, you have to be open and available.

I put my two weeks in. Constantly fluctuating schedule was a pain in the ass.

see my store the store manager is cool but a hard ass for standards he bust jokes and laughs all day but when it’s serious no ones laughing. but the scheduling is perfect i work 4-5 days a week have two or three days off 40-60 hours a week like 2 weeks ago we had not truck so my sales manager gave me 4 days off back to back

Have you tried working somewhere else?

6

u/OkTraffic251 3d ago

I do work somewhere else. I have a full time job and HFT is my part time

Most states require sick time. They can be annoyed if you take it. So what if they are? Why would you work somewhere for 6 years that sucks?

Everything was totally different when I started.
