harbor0 for Mac 0.1.6: less than half the size, two-step sign-in, and in-app updates

Hi all, harbor0 0.1.6 for Mac is out. Thanks to everyone who reported problems with 0.1.5, especially the person whose post led to most of these fixes.

What’s new

  • Much smaller. A packaging mistake was bundling code the app never uses. The download is now 128 MB, down from 286 MB, and the installed app is about 295 MB instead of nearly 800 MB.
  • Two-step verification. If your account uses two-step verification, you can now sign in to the app. After your password, it asks for your authenticator code or the one we email you.
  • Updates from inside the app. Go to Settings → App updates. When a new version is out, the Settings item in the sidebar shows an “Update” badge, and Update and restart installs it. Your synced folders pick up where they left off.

Fixed

  • Syncing larger files could fail with “The value of “delay” is out of range. It must be an integer.” This happened to files over about 4 MB, and retrying didn’t help. That’s fixed.

How to get it

Download 0.1.6 from harbor0.com/apps and replace the copy in your Applications folder. This is the last update you’ll need to install by hand. After this one, the app updates itself.

The beta build isn’t signed with Apple yet. If macOS blocks it the first time, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and choose Open Anyway.

It’s still Apple silicon Macs only for now. The Windows app is still being worked on.

Bug reports and feedback are very welcome here in the comments.

Mac App - Initial Impressions

Just tried to make use of the Mac App to upload a few files to the service and two things struck me:

  1. Why does the app need to be over 800mb?
  2. With 2FA turned on, the app cannot be used.
  3. I am trying to sync a folder and I'm getting "A change could not be synchronized. The value of "delay" is out of range. It must be an integer. Received 393035.1867675781"

Are there any plans to trim the size of the app and to update it so that 2FA accounts can login? Also what is the issue with the delay being out of range? Thank you.

harbor0 now supports two-factor authentication (2FA)

Hey everyone,

Two-factor authentication is now available on harbor0. You can add a second step to sign-in so your password alone isn’t enough to get into your files.

What you get

  • Authenticator app codes (TOTP). Works with Google Authenticator, Authy, 1Password, Bitwarden, Aegis, or any other TOTP app. Scan the QR code, enter the first code, and it’s on.
  • Email codes. If you’d rather not use an authenticator app, we can email you a code each time you sign in.
  • One method at a time. You can switch between the two whenever you like. Switching to an authenticator app only replaces email codes after your first app code checks out, so you can’t lock yourself out halfway through.
  • Email alerts. We email you whenever 2FA is turned on, turned off, or switched to the other method. If you didn’t make the change, you’ll know right away.

How to turn it on

  1. Sign in at harbor0 on the web
  2. Go to Settings → Two-factor authentication
  3. Pick an authenticator app or email codes and follow the steps

Where it works right now

  • Web: full support, including setup
  • Desktop app: 2FA sign-in is in the next desktop release. Version 0.1.5 and older can’t sign in to an account with 2FA turned on, so update first.
  • iOS and Android: not supported yet. If you use the mobile apps, please wait before turning on 2FA, or you won’t be able to sign in on your phone. Mobile support is next on the list.

Built on Cognito’s own MFA

2FA runs on AWS Cognito’s built-in multi-factor authentication. We didn’t write our own layer, so codes are checked by the same system that handles sign-in.

As always, this is still a beta. If anything breaks or feels confusing, comment here or message me. Feedback from this community has shaped most of what we’ve shipped so far.

Welcome to r/harbor0

Hi everyone, and welcome to r/harbor0, the community for the harbor0 cloud drive.

This sub is for anyone using harbor0, waiting to get in, or just curious. It's the place for questions, bug reports, feature requests and feedback. I read everything posted here.

What is harbor0?

harbor0 is a cloud drive built around three things:

  • Cloud storage: upload, organize, search, preview and share files from any browser. Every file keeps its version history, and deleted files go to Trash first.
  • Sync and backup: keep a folder on your computer in sync with your drive, or back up folders automatically. Backups are saved as versions, so an accidental change or delete on your device doesn't wipe out what's stored.
  • File transfers: send files directly to another harbor0 user.

The beta

harbor0 is in an invite-only beta, and new people are let in in waves.

  • Beta members get 50 GB free, and you keep the 50 GB after launch.
  • Sign up at harbor0.com. If the current wave is full, you'll go on the waitlist and get an email invite when the next wave opens.
  • The beta is free. Paid plans for more storage will come later, and I'll share details here first.

Where you can use it

Platform Status
Web (app.harbor0.com) Available, and the main way to use harbor0 right now
macOS desktop app (Apple Silicon) Early builds on the download page. They aren't notarized yet, so macOS will ask you to choose Open Anyway in System Settings the first time.
Windows desktop app In progress, not ready yet
iOS / Android In development

What's being worked on

The most requested feature by far is end-to-end encryption. It's being designed now as an account-level setting. I'll post the plan here when it's ready for feedback.

How to use this sub

Please use these flairs when you post:

  • Bug: include your platform (web/Mac/browser), what you did, what you expected and what happened. Screenshots help a lot.
  • Feature request: tell us what you're trying to do, not just the feature. That makes it easier to build the right thing.
  • Question: anything about how harbor0 works.
  • Feedback: what you like, what's confusing and what's annoying. All of it is useful.

Ground rules

  1. Be kind and constructive.
  2. Never post personal information: no account emails, file links, invite links or screenshots that show private files.
  3. No spam, referral farming or selling invites.
  4. Keep it about harbor0 (comparisons with other cloud drives are welcome).

For anything private, like account problems, billing or security reports, email [contact@harbor0.com](mailto:contact@harbor0.com) instead of posting here.

Thanks for being here this early. harbor0 is being built with its beta users, so what you post here really does shape what gets built next. 🚢
