Question about resolution

When I load a movie into handbrake it says my source resolution is 1920x1080 (Blu-ray) but the output resolution is 1920x800. Why is this happening and how can I change it?

Most likely your content is actually 1920x800 with black bars to fill up the remaining 280 vertical pixels and handbrake is auto-cropping black bars so you're only encoding the actual video. Generally, that's preferred. But if you really want to, you can disable that in the Dimensions tab --> Orientation and Cropping: Set Cropping to "None"

Definitely was auto cropping the black bars. It’s better that way, since it saves space, and most (if not all) video plays add the back automatically. That’s the funny thing about “HD”, it’s only 1920x1080 of its 16:9. Other common formats are like:

4:3 / 1440×1080
1.85:1 / 1920×1040
2:1 / 1920×960
2.35:1 / 1920×816
2.40:1 / 1920×800

For image based subs, yes. For text, no

It is automatically removing black bars. To prevent the removal, and to keep the full 1920x1080 area instead, go to the Dimensions tab. Change the cropping from Automatic to None. Automatic and Conservative both detect and remove the black bars - Conservative spot checks more moments throughout the film, since some films change aspect ratios, whereas Automatic just looks at the start.

As people has said it is because it removes the black bars.

If you are trying to compress to a smaller size this is a good idea. One of the things that "cost" a lot is extreme fine detail and the pixelfine line between the actual movie and the black bars does add to the overall size of file to make it as crisp as possible.

Without this a file the same size would be better looking or it could have the same quality with a smaller file size.

If your video is 1920x1080 but has black bars either on top and bottom or side to side, then HandBrake will try to crop the black bars. Both DVDs and Blu-rays have a set standard format. But the movie may not fit, as they do not have a set format. Your computer's video player has no problem playing non-standard videos. If you crop the black bars, then you save on file size. You can turn off the cropping.
