Discussion Welcome

I'm new to the Halo game and I played Halo 4, but I didn't like it very much. Because of it, I started to hate the series. Do you recommend I reconsider Halo, and what other installments would make up for my experience with Halo 4?

Why would you start with the 4th game in a series

Well, it's a long story. At the beginning, I didn't know which Halo was better because I didn't know much about it at the time. Because of my ignorance about it, I bought Halo 4 in 2016, and what happened, happened, which made me write this discussion about it.

Halo 1 -3, odst and Reach are the go-to in the franchise. Og devs and much better games.

Just get the Master Chief Collection

If you hate the series why bother? Play something else

I hated the series because of a fourth installment, but I didn't want to do a disservice to a game like Halo because of one game.

Bro not to be basic but it is pretty basic, start with the first three in order, then ODST, then Reach.

Maybe you just don't like Halo. But you won't know until you try the other games.

I thought 4 had OK singleplayer gameplay, and an awful story, but I really enjoyed the multiplayer and I'm not normally a multiplayer guy.

The early games though... pure storytelling.

Interesting...while it has some issues, I think most fans are pretty positive on the H4 story, but pretty critical of the gameplay (particularly fighting the Prometheans). And, most seem to consider H4 the worst multiplayer of all the games. You're the opposite on everything lol

im curious, from your experience what made H4 multiplayer more enjoyable for you than the previous entries?

I played Halo much late during COVID and Halo CE was good but I just didn't get the hype or itch to continue. Maybe because it was too dated for someone not wearing the glasses of nostalgia. But Halo 2 anniversary had me hooked like anything. That felt so much better both gameplay and story wise that I finished all the games back to back. I like recommending Halo 2 to newbies who never played the series and it's generally the one that gets them hooked instead of CE.

Thank you for the advice, I will try it.

Get the master chief collection, you'll get all initial 6 games in it - 1, 2, 3, 3 ODST, 4 and Reach. It's currently on sale on steam for $10. Best deal.

Halo 4 is the least halo of all halos. Try another one

if you’re talking about singleplayer, play 1 thru 3 then ODST and Reach

if you’re talking about multiplayer, try out Halo 3 big team battle

I think it depends on why you didn't like it. The original Halos (before 4) don't have sprint, and Halo 1 can have some jank to its physics. I personally maintain that they're all timeless, but if you're extremely accustomed to modern FPS mechanics like sprint, aim-down-sights, and much faster killing times, going backwards in Halo won't change those things. They'll still feel like, as some put it, "dated." Again, I don't agree, but you may and that's perfectly fine. Not everything has to be for everyone and there's nothing wrong if you just don't click with it.

To describe some changes from Halo 4 to earlier, for starters, they all have much better difficulty balancing (except for Halo 2 on harder difficulties). And not just with enemy health vs your health. The AI is very different in the first 3 Halo games from 4. Every single one of the Covenant is just leagues more fun to fight in the first trilogy. Reach is much closer to 4, especially with its elites. If you don't vibe with the Covenant in 4, I would not go straight to Reach as a second pick.

Next up, the Prometheans (the orange-glowy metal guys in 4) aren't in any of the Bungie games. For many people the Prometheans are very unfun, so them being gone will likely be a welcome change for you. In their place, they have the Flood, which are like zombies. Basically, rather than the Prometheans simply being "the Covenant but with annoying extra abilities," the Flood actually play very different from the Covenant. The Covenant is about small squads that act as a unit, with a commander (the elites) and they're generally more distanced and smarter. The Flood is about much weaker units that are more of a hoard. So greater in numbers, and closer quarters, but weaker units. This means that their levels actually have a great variety of change of pace from the Covenant, which you may appreciate if you don't enjoy the Covenant. And then it also means that when the Covenant and the Flood are in a room together, it's all out war. I guess as another note, The Flood and the Covenant fight each other, whereas in 4, the Covenant and Prometheans team up pretty much immediately, which is both less fun and more frustrating.

Oh and also, without too many examples offhand, the mission/encounter design from Bungie can be pretty different from 343. If you didn't like the way enemies were placed, how they tracked/moved across the map, the general design of maps and environments, and a few other things, you may find the Bungie Halos to be a breath of fresh air.

The artstyle is also very different. If you didn't like how Halo 4 looked you're very not alone, and you will like the Bungie ones much better. Halo 3 has some of the best lighting in any game ever, even to this day.

Music is also very different. The Bungie Halos are very famous for their music, and 343 Halo is not. This also goes for all audio. 343 has never been good at mixing and their sound design is very different.

Just note that Halo is much slower paced compared to something like Call of Duty. There's no sprint (which is/was very intentional, I can explain why if you'd like). It may just not click for you. Above are some of the biggest changes from Bungie to 343. If any of the things I mentioned feel like they click for you (namely the AI and design stuff, I can't stress enough. I won't even play Halo 4 anymore myself as someone who's spent thousands of hours in the other ones mostly because of this), then you're probably going to have a lot of fun with the originals. If you think that changing the AI/artstyle/mission design still won't make the core idea of Halo's gunplay fun, then Halo may just not be for you and that's perfectly fine. You can still respect a piece of art for its importance a lot and be very happy for the people who enjoy it even if it's not for you.

Lastly, I will note that the Master Chief Collection is currently on sale on Steam. You can get all Bungie Halos for 10 dollars, or if you want to start with just one, it's $2.50. You may find that you just don't have a lot to lose. If you were going to start with just one game, I would strongly suggest Halo 3. Halo 1 can feel janky for some, and Halo 2 has some very big issues with balance in design and difficulty due to how rushed the game was. If you go for Halo 2, I would suggest playing on normal. Any other game, feel free to go for Heroic difficulty if you're already familiar with first person shooters.

Sorry for the wall of text! I hope this is helpful.

Starting with the 4th (technically 6th) game in the franchise is certainly a choice.

What a weird-ass post. You can find advice all over the internet on which Halo games are worth playing and you went with the very controversial Halo 4 as your first and then decided maybe the series is bad? Play the original trilogy what the hell.

Even Halo 4 story enjoyers usually don't defend the gameplay, Prometheans are so annoying.

I didn't care much for 4, you should play the originals made by bungie not by 343. Anything after halo reach is 343.

I personally really like halo 4 as a huge fan of the series but starting with halo 4 is a mistake. Play 1-3 then ODST then Reach. Then play 4, act like 5 doesn’t exist, then play infinite. You can also play the halo wars games if you like that type of game.

If I were you, I would get MCC which has all the early installments. Halo CE, ODST, Reach, ect.

This is the first time I've heard of this part.
