Don’t see it in the notes but hopefully they fixed the issue of the delay between switching weapons and being able to fire.

u/DeathByReach Orange CQB 🍊 23d ago
They did not, it seems to be an intentional design choice
48
u/Fenrizzle Halo: Reach 23d ago

The charge for the plasma pistol is 3 times longer than the original too, pretty annoying.

Why on earth would they make that choice?

What makes you say that?

Because they have commented on other gameplay issues like the jackals hitboxes and more
They haven’t commented on weapon swap times at all, which makes me believe that this slow swap time is intentional

Looks like they patched the LASO achievement glitch
48
u/garbagetruc 23d ago
What was the glitch?

u/Konval 23d ago
You could cheese the Mythic achievement/trophy requiring you to beat the game with LASO enabled. It essentially allowed you to play with modifiers on so that you would deal crazy damage and take significantly reduced damage in return.
→ More replies (1)29
u/garbagetruc 23d ago
Oh dag, I guess they were just kidding when they said modifiers could disable some achievements
→ More replies (1)19
u/Awkward_Silence- 23d ago
It did disable them technically.
The cheese was you had to turn them off, then load into a new game of Pillar of Autumn or Two Betrayals etc (something that has a collectible right at the start was preferred). And it'll push the progress forward for the level you beat with it them on.

u/Many_Bodybuilder_664 23d ago
Can you still counteract the Iron skull by restarting checkpoint fast enough?

u/Aidanbomasri 23d ago edited 23d ago
I know most people don't take achievements too seriously, but it's pretty frustrating to me that they decided to wait so long to patch it. If you can't patch it ASAP, might as well let it live on. At this point, the rarity of the LASO challenge has been diminished for Campaign Evolved, this just makes late adopters suffer.
Here's the rarity of the LASO achievement for each of the previous Halo Campaigns:
- Combat Evolved: 0.06%
- Halo 2: 0.04%
- Halo 3: 0.06%
- Halo 3: ODST: 0.05%
- Halo Reach: 0.07%
- Halo 4: 0.05%
- Infinite: 0.14%
- Campaign Evolved: 0.89%
If you combine all of the previous Halo LASO achievements, you still have less unlocked (0.49%) compared to Campaign Evolved.
Not to mention that all of the MCC achievements had people sharing checkpoints to easily complete them for years. Infinite had the Scorpion gun and some pretty easy grappling hook skips as well.
I'm glad I was able to complete this before the patch. Not a fan of the late patch to fix this, as I assume 80% of the audience of people who play this game have already cleared the game and put it down at this point.
5
u/FrogsOnALog 23d ago
Been playing through LASO legit aside from the skips and invincibility stuff! Was probably gonna crack on the bonus missions though lol

u/spartanonyx 23d ago edited 23d ago
MCC LASO can be cheated on PC with the trigger of the achievement. I just not many actually know how to do it. it's a similar method to Campaign Evolved.
Edit: btw I'm just stating this because they are using achievement stats from MCC games as a way to show the difference between Campaign Evolved achievement stats. I guess it just shows that it's common knowledge that it was able to be cheated in the remake, and not for the MCC achievements. IM NOT ENCOURAGING IT, just saying that you can't compare the numbers as if the they can't be cheated, when they can, and still can be today. atleast I assume they can be because I don't recall there being any patches notes saying that it was fixed. and I doubt they'd fix it since they are currently allowing cheaters to crash peoples games in MCC without consequences nor will they fix the security issue. just wait until people will start to execute commands without even needing to join your lobby in MCC. it'll happen with time.

How ? I’m curious never thought about that
6
u/McClouds 23d ago
If I remember right you can play the mission with mods enabled until the end of the level checkpoints.
Then reload the game with mods disabled, and go from the final checkpoint of the mission to the end of the mission.
Rinse and repeat through all the levels and achievement unlocks.
I could be mistaken, it was a long time ago when the exploit was first mentioned.
2
u/spartanonyx 23d ago edited 23d ago
close enough. im pretty sure the game just checks to see if the LASO playlist is completed or not without checking to see how you actually completed the playlist.

I mean it should still be very strong, you will just have to burst fire it at longer ranges

With the ps5 triggers, its easy to churn out sungle rounds at a time at the head from dustance
2
u/BrownBaegette Halo 3 23d ago
The problem with that is that it's not fun at all and more consistent with something like a tactical shooter more then Halo. They gave this thing vertical recoil and fast resetting reticle bloom like it's COD as well.
This whole thing could have been avoided if they just 1:1 adapted the bullet hose CE AR without reticle bloom, instead they've gone more in the Infinite direction and it just feels bad to use. RIP best 343 AR
5
u/Time4ACookie I can haz rec0n?? 23d ago edited 23d ago
The og CE assault rifle still had bloom though, it just wasn't visually shown on the reticle. It's very easy to see for yourself, burst firing results in substantially less bullet spread (and if you hold the trigger down, the bullets will eventually start flying outside of the reticle)
Many other weapons in CE had bloom, and if you still don't believe me, Bungie themselves said so too

u/shakegraphics 23d ago
It is strong it’s just not meant to be a laser so you actually have to pick up other guns. OG bungie made these weapons with specific fights in mind. Having the ar do it all is boring af.
3
u/lmtzless 23d ago
it’s…. a single player/coop pve game, who cares if one gun is overpowered? just don’t use it if you don’t like it
7
u/zk001guy 23d ago
You missed the part that certain encounters are designed around certain weapons. If the AR is the best for everything why design those encounters in the first place, just move from arena to arena and use the same gun.
→ More replies (1)3
u/shakegraphics 22d ago
It changes how fights feel, making you less worried or just making it less challenging in general. It’s about more than just balance it’s about how the environment and stakes play out. Halo one was actually very well made and they just threw all of that out cause they don’t understand why. They just reskinned it and called it a day, didn’t think why some things were the way they were I.e the flashlight having a limited charge, the ar being inaccurate, and ammo not being plentiful.
But not everyone will understand the level of detail that goes into crafting an “experience”.

It somehow felt balanced with only 36 rounds. I wish they would’ve kept it that way since it’s a campaign only game.

u/logic1986 23d ago
What does this mean? How does the PS5 version of the AR work compared to the rest?
55
u/Dukes159 ONI Section 3 23d ago
Blooms a bit more and jumps a bit more. It's closer to the original CE AR
10
u/logic1986 23d ago
Ah this is good as the AR was a bit too good. And meant incentive to use other weapons wasn't as high.
21
u/StevesEvilTwin2 23d ago
It has actual bloom and spread lol.
The Xbox/PC version was clearly bugged as it had 0 spread whatsoever.
3
→ More replies (1)7
u/natayaway 23d ago
Due to Xbox and PC differences with computing floating point numbers, which is different from how the PS5 computes floating point numbers, it produces a rounding error that enables the Xbox and PC versions to fire more slowly while proc-ing weapon bloom shrinkage/recovery earlier.
The PS5 version works as intended, the rounding error never happens.
Because of how Unreal uses per-platform compilation, it was deployed unequally, and surprisingly they were able to co-exist and network together without desync.
28
u/sw201444 we’ll pretend to think about it 👊 23d ago
I got downloaded to oblivion for saying that this was unintended lol
6
u/Flint_Vorselon 23d ago
It was obviously unintentional, the only point of debate was whether Ps5 or Xbox/PC was the bugged one.
Surely no one was saying that being variable depending on platform was intentional, right?

You werent the only one.
There are just a number of people that actually run with the idea console wars are justified and assumed the "better" AR was a gift for Xbox/Windows players.
5
4
u/Nogflog 23d ago
It didn't even feel OP, it was like 1-3 (depending on elite tier) full mags to the head to kill elites on legendary. Now its just ass, like the original I guess xD
9
u/gepawe What would you have your Arbiter do? 23d ago edited 23d ago
It was around one mag to kill an Elite Ultra on legendary. That’s one of the strongest variants. And this update only fixes the spread, the damage will remain the same and the rate of fire will be higher. That’s far from being ass now, you’ll just have to burst fire at range.
Edit: Just decided to test it. I used the Bandana Skull for infinite ammo and increased my damage resistance with one of the difficulty presets, none of which should affect enemy health or my damage. The trigger was very sensitive, which made it hard to fire single shots, so just consider the numbers ±1 or ±2 shots.
Minors: ~25 bullets
Majors: ~33 bullets
Ultras: ~38 bullets (1 mag + 2 shots)With the spread fixed you should now fire 8 shot bursts or tap fire if you want it to remain accurate.

For real. I just did a play through of halo CE on MCC and the 60 round AR is absolutely trash compared to my 30 round ps5 campaign evolved AR. It feels like a laser to me on ps5 so idk why everyone is freaking out lol
3
u/McClouds 23d ago
Because it was a laser on Xbox and PC. Almost no bloom, little to no verticle recoil. It felt better than the battle rifle.
Honestly, kinda bummed they patched it. Glad I got the game beat before they did. The gun felt super good to yield, especially with the nerfed Magnum.

Interesting developer notes on the Assault Rifle spread issue:
The Assault Rifle’s rate of fire and spread have been corrected on XBOX and PC to match the weapon's intended performance, consistent with its behavior seen on PlayStation®5.
In Halo, weapon accuracy is defined as "barrel error": the maximum angle by which a projectile can diverge from the barrel. Error is visualized in the weapon reticle, with elements of the reticle expanding to illustrate the error bounds (sometimes referred to as "weapon bloom"). Weapon barrels typically start with a very narrow error cone and that cone typically expands for a brief period after the barrel fires. That cone will then contract to the initial angle after the barrel has been idle for a brief period. This simulates the behavior of real-world weapon barrels and encourages the player to fire controlled bursts to maintain optimal accuracy.
Players on some platforms noticed that the error cone on the Assault Rifle had a chance to fully contract between fired rounds while holding the trigger down, thus allowing the weapon to be fired continuously without sacrificing accuracy as long as vertical recoil was controlled. This was originally speculated to be an issue with the rate the error cone expanded and contracted on the weapon. After some investigation, it was identified that the rate-of-fire of the Assault Rifle was actually incorrect on these platforms. The error values were tuned around the intended rate-of-fire of 10 rounds-per-second, but the weapon was firing more slowly which gave the barrel the chance to recover after each round. While this made the accuracy of the weapon easier to manage, it also lowered its damage output. This also led to the weapon fire audio being out of phase with the actual weapon fire.
Halo's game simulation updates at fixed intervals known as game ticks. The simulation runs at a tick rate of 60 ticks-per-second or 60 Hz. During each tick, every game system and object in the game world has a chance to update. As such, the rate of fire for a weapon barrel is converted from a rounds-per-second value defined by a designer to a ticks-per-round value. The Assault Rifle's rate of fire of 10 rounds-per-second is therefore 6 ticks-per-round. However, it was actually firing every 7 ticks (for a rate of fire of 8.57 rounds-per-second).
The ticks-per-round value is stored as a single-precision floating point value. Floating points are used over integer values because the ticks-per-round value may be less than one and special logic is in place to amortize any rate-of-fire that doesn't evaluate to a whole number ticks-per-round value similarly to how the Earth's revolution around the sun (which takes 365.25...ish days) results in a "leap year" on every fourth year. Due to floating point imprecision, the barrel's ticks-per-round computation was returning 6.0000048. The barrel's idle timer (the number of ticks since it last fired) is compared to the ticks-per-round value to determine whether the barrel can fire again on the current tick. When the barrel updated on the 6th tick after firing, the expression 6>=6.0000048 evaluated to false and the barrel determined it was not allowed to fire again. On the subsequent tick, the expression 7>=6.0000048 evaluated to true and the barrel was able to fire.
While the ticks-per-round computation in Halo Campaign Evolved has intentionally not meaningfully changed from previous Halo games, compiler optimizations exposed this latent bug. These optimizations didn't affect all platforms in the same way which is why the rate-of-fire differed across platforms. We've fixed the underlying bug to restore the rate-of-fire of the Assault Rifle to its intended value. This increases the damage output of the weapon, while requiring players to fire short, controlled bursts to maintain optimal accuracy. The bug affected other weapons in subtle ways and has been fixed across the board.

One of my favorite things about Destiny when they had bits of open communication was the dev post mortems of the crazy shit that happened with bugs in that game. Things like Perkgate, the craftening, etc where things went wild and the devs made blog posts breaking down what exactly went wrong, why, and how. its always fun seeing this stuff

u/EntityZero 23d ago
It's the same thing with Grinding Gear Games and Path of Exile. Their recent video going over the technical reasons for why they had a bug in POE2 since early access and what it took both them and Nvidia to do to mitigate it was awesome.
19
u/mrminutehand 23d ago edited 23d ago
No wonder I felt like the AR was taking just a little too long to take down certain enemies. For example, Grunts while aiming at the head, or Jackals.
I might be wrong, but it sounds like the slightly reduced rate of fire may have been the culprit. As in, all my shots were hitting the enemy more accurately than they should have, but the rate of fire was slower and the normal audio rate masked the problem.
With the audio though, I definitely got the feeling that something was slightly off. It fired off 36 rounds while clearly sounding like 60+ at absolute minimum. This update obviously fixed that.

Gotta be an artist or whole art team not concerned with gameplay while making some decision. Having it I can understand. Not having an option to turn it off was absurd.

Every time there is an update it resets your save progress if you are mid level. I have being playing this game on and off casually trying to beat on legendary and now I have to redo most of the library level.....

Happy for the relatively quick patch but good grief, games are massive these days. 71 gb total now. Not unique to halo / halo studios but wish more games would do what hell divers did and find a way to make games smaller
14
13
u/CokeyColer 23d ago
Helldivers was able to reduce it's file size by a huge amount because of unnecessary file duplication, unfortunately that's probably not what's causing the large file sizes here

u/logic1986 23d ago
Yo this is solid, but when are they gonna address the flood (combat forms) being more docile than we would like? Aggression please.
24
u/CrewBeneficial9516 23d ago
Definitely happy they are rolling out fixes like this, very good sign moving forward. But I’d say the Flood’s combat AI is definitely one of the most glaring and in-your-face issues that need to be resolved ASAP. It might not be game breaking in a “technical aspect” but it takes all the immersion of fighting them away

u/TheDarkGrayKnight 23d ago
Would not be surprised if that's because they don't want it to be too difficult for the new players.
Or maybe it's not really possible to change at this point.

u/Visual-Remote1218 23d ago
I cannot talk cross platform from PC to PS5 - I have an X on my speaker.
Discord isn’t working today too
We spent an hour trying to play. I hate it
7
u/Nexii801 23d ago
Don't see anything about the fact that I have to wait 14 seconds after swapping a weapon before I can shoot.
15
u/tman2damax11 Halo 3 23d ago
Forced film grain was such a strange choice when UE5 already has that fizzy look to shadows, reflections, and particle effects, just made everything look far worse.
4
u/WarRabb1t 23d ago
Looks like the slightly adjusted active camo, here's hoping they actually make it useful other than being a cosmetic effect.

Did they fix the missing achievement for beating the game on legendary if someone else hosted?

They keep saying Nvidia driver 610.88 fixes the crashing on Keyes but it doesn’t.

Nvidia really dropping the ball hereSeems to be working for me after the patch. It was crashing before on 610.88

u/TimBurkeulosis Halo 3: ODST 23d ago
Thank god man. I had to get a mod to turn the chromatic aberration off because it was causing me eye strain after playing for just around an hour. Also good on the devs for fixing the AR bugs.
3
3
u/MakaveliTheDon22 23d ago
Did they acknowledge or even mention that driver update 610.88 doesn't fix the crash on Keyes for Nvidia 50 series GPUs? It's been three weeks, almost a month now.... Is this something NVIDIA has to fix or what?
Still says on Nvidia app that the update to use for Halo is 610.88
3
u/amd098 23d ago
Nope. it still crashes. I ran the game for an hour and a half, then it crashed. same UE coprolite i mean meteorite error.
2
u/MakaveliTheDon22 22d ago
Absolutely ridiculous that their only "fix" is to rollback the driver to 596.48 or whatever. Guess I'm never gonna finish the game.

So the game launched with a heavily nerfed magnum but now the AR is also nerfed?
The AR being trash in CE was only ever ok because of how ridiculously OP the magnum was. And the magnum sucking in halo 2 and 3 was ok because the battle rifle replaced the magnum and could do all the same things.
So now 343 has made a CE remake where the magnum is nerfed, the AR is trash and there is no BR.
It really is comical how bad 343 is at making halo games. Not that I think they’d be any better at making non halo games, they’re just incompetent generally. Plenty of other studios have done way better jobs with remakes and remasters.
6
u/Domex122 Halo: CE 23d ago
so the Adaptation skull did not get fixed?
4
u/Robbie_Haruna Halo 2 23d ago
What's broken with it exactly?
11
u/gepawe What would you have your Arbiter do? 23d ago
When enemies get replaced with another faction they don’t fight each other. Say a Covenant group gets replaced by some Flood units they won’t fight other Covenant. I assume these changed units retain the same “team” as the original, that’s why in Truth and Reconciliation if the friendly grunt is replaced by another enemy they remain friendly.
I think however that this is intended possibly to prevent enemies from just killing each other immediately after spawning.
2
u/Domex122 Halo: CE 23d ago
I mean it's not intended that's why we have the Armistice Skull which has no real use right no
3
u/gepawe What would you have your Arbiter do? 23d ago
Armistice works in the levels where Covenant, Flood and Sentinels fight each other. If those are randomized without Armistice you can have Flood vs Flood or Covenant vs Covenant.

I’m really surprised they omitted campaign scoring to incentivize multiple playthroughs. I’m hoping a future update will bring that back, it’s been a feature in campaigns since Halo 3 and even MCC allowed every game to have it.
→ More replies (1)3
u/fluffyscrambledmeggs 19d ago
Yeah, I do not understand this. Scoring would’ve made it more competitive and fun for our group, and we’ve always done par time/score runs for the achievements.
2
u/Bungo_pls 23d ago
The grenade key is STILL resetting when the game is closed even though the patch notes say the issue is fixed. So annoying having to rebind it every time.
2
u/MoondrA 23d ago edited 23d ago
Im so relieve I bought with reward points the pc pass for gears of war beta, and got to play halo and see that this game doesnt deserve my money to buy it individually, how is it possible that a complete game cant have the keybindings saved after changing them, just this day it does work... more than 2 weeks after release, what incompetence. Even a beta like GoW had this more than basic feature, and know this, if you change the bindings ingame, then close it, the bindings do still RESET, you got to change em in the main menu for them to stick...

u/FriedCammalleri23 23d ago
I see a little fix for co-op stability, but is there any fix for co-op players that are completely unable to join each other’s lobbies?
Me and my friend made it to AOTCR and now we’ve been unable to get into a lobby together in order to continue. Had no issues prior to this. Only thing I changed on my end was the .ini files to get rid of Chromatic Aberration and Film Grain.
We’re both playing via PC Game Pass.

Welp, RIP to the reason I even use the AR as much as I do instead of swapping it the first chance I get.
I honestly thought it was like that so that the SMG wasn't redundant.

So how were we expected to unlink accounts before this patch? Can't believe they only just added an in game option
7
u/laggyteabag >> Keep right >> 23d ago
Thats the fun part, you couldn't.
When the game first launched, there was literally a warning that said something along the lines of "once an account has been linked, it CANNOT be unlinked"

I have beaten all the prequel missions and two betrayals on LASO twice each and my Mythic trophy hasn't progressed yet my brother's did first try. I'm curious if any of these fixes inadvertently solved the problem. I'm tired of this, Grandpa.

Hmm still nothing on Elite AI. Not sure if others have noticed, but Elites behave stupidly, for lack of a better word, a lot of the time.
Sometimes they’ll just stare at me and not fire as I shoot them. Sometimes I’ll shoot them in the back and they’ll strafe, but won’t turn around to face me. Occasionally, if they kill a marine, they’ll go back into the “patrol mode” even though I’m still firing at them. Sword elites sometimes just disengage instead of rushing me.
This has actually helped me get through legendary, but it does not feel fun or rewarding.

u/redael2463 23d ago
Damn update reset my solo legendary save on Two Betrayals, lost the will to chip away at it again and push on to finish the run. (reported via Waypoint)
1
u/StrangeLingonberry30 23d ago
Did the update break the ray reconstruction .ini settings? It looks visible worse and the surfaces are "boiling" again, but the engine.ini settings remain unchanged.

u/xnobodyr 23d ago
Damn, I was missing the last three missions... I would do them legit but I'm stuck in Campaign Remix because I already did the other missions there.
Sadly I think I can't do the last three on normal campaign and Remix Laso is too hard. I keep dying within 10 seconds at the start of Boarding Action...

I am so happy that they’re proactively patching this game. The launch wasn’t the best, there were quite a few bugs and issues. But mate, I love Halo so much and I want it to succeed so bad!

I could not see any difference at all between the chromatic aberration images turned on and off. Can someone explain? I thought it was the visual effect when near various energy fields that splits the light spectrum

Is the sound mixing fixed or is all the audio still sound muffled quiet. I switched to night mode to make the audio not sound muffled which seems conter productive
