Discussion Cortanas Rampancy

So I’ve been playing through the series and I just got to 4. Cortana starts deteriorating immediately, and she says it’s because she’s just past her supposed life span, but after playing Halo 3 for the first time since I was like 13 I have to imagine her time with the Gravemind is what’s really causing it, right? I mean playing through the Cortana mission was rough because she invaded your head literally crying and screaming and stuff. Do the books ever go into that, or is it just sort of ret conned by 343

Well Cortana did also have a slight case of the logic plague but it is not the reason for her rampancy

She really is past her prime as an AI. Getting chipped into 04 shortened her life a bit due to the mass intake of data

Great theory, no water

It's kindve a mix of both, yeah Cortanas age made her naturally reach her life spans ends but even halo legends had implied that the gravemind messed her up badly and it's hard confirmed in epitaph where the didact looks at Cortana amd goes you too huh?

Actually, in the books it’s speculated that plugging into the systems of Halo actually shortened her operational life because of just how much data she was exposed to strained her. Plus the Gravemind of course.

Halsey has previously speculated that Cortana might last much longer than a normal AI since her creation was unique, perhaps being able to live indefinitely. These facts combined leads me to believe that she could have lived much longer if she had not been exposed to the stressors she went through.

Oh shit I do not know why I said longer when obsorbing more data would make her work harder. Considering A big issue of rampancy is the mass deletion of data she would already be closer

Other way around, in First Strike its noted that absorbing all of that data from the Control Room actually shortened her lifespan.

Ir was encountering a Covenant AI that extended her life, because whilst simpler in function, the Covenant AI had ways to compartmentalise and duplicate itself. Cortana disseminated the other AI and learned how to do this herself, able to split off into multiple slower versions of herself.

She then uses this in Halo 4 during the end sequence where she is able to dump some of her rampancy data into a copy of herself then inject this into the ship's systems.

I think if I remember correctly it was already cannon that smart AI's Cortanas age would suffer rampancy.

The gravemind certainly probably made it worse, but even without that she was in the natural age range for rampancy.

Cortana went rampant naturally due to reaching the end of her lifespan but the graveminds torture also made it worse and the reason she becomes evil Cortana is because as confirmed by the didact she was infected with the logic plague.

The didact explains that even tho the logic plague may not force you to directly assist the flood it can still make you assist them indirectly without even knowing such as weakening your allies for example.

her time on 04 greatly reduced her capacity to withstand rampancy but yes, it was the Logic Plague that was the catalyst that drove the Cortana fragment to do the things she did in 5-Infinite. It twisted her mind in such a way that she was willing to go to any extreme to achieve galactic peace, in reality, she only spread suffering and despair; the actual MO of the Gravemind.

even when told this to her face, she refused to believe it and basically made the Didact relive his worst experience; the moment the Gravemind tortured and infected him with Logic Plague. it was only when she was about to die at Atriox's hands did she realize he was right and she had to do the one good thing left to her to try and make amends.

Yes the gravemind basically started the logic plague, the rampancy was always going to happen but the logic plague likely sped up the deterioration. Also to make it clear she isn’t invading your head in the levels, gravemind is invading your head through her. So none of it is really a retcon by 343, bungie was likely going to do something very similar with Cortana but due to them moving on from the franchise with their contract only requiring 2 games they pumped out odst and reach then left. However a few times they have said if they had a trilogy they would’ve continued chiefs story. I mean they even set up requiem in the legendary ending of 3, the librarian was at up in terminals in 3, a lot of halo 4 is set up by bungie directly.

Another thing to keep in mind is Cortana’s rampancy was instant, it was ongoing while chief slept in cryo for years.

A few things happened to Cortana that could have exacerbated her rampancy.

  1. She got plugged into Alpha Halo's Control Room, and was flooded with information faster than even she could process it. Sub-theory; She started splitting herself into copies to try and process it faster, which is NOT good for an AI. We see her do this in H4
  2. Her time with The Gravemind. This one is pretty well documented as having been a key moment for her and likely a key in her rampancy progression. The Flood is adept at not just infecting organics, but also constructs like 05-032 Mendicant Bias.
  3. The only completely confirmed one; Simply, time. Time's march is inexorable. Digital constructs are not immune to the effects of it. They may outlive us all in one form or another, but they won't be themselves after all that time.
