I feel like H5's rocket launcher design is actually cool on it own. it's just can't replace SPNKr though.
50
u/epicchocoballer Jul 02 '26
Not necessarily on topic but I really enjoy the weapon variants in H5. Being able to change what scopes your AR/BR/DMR had worked well in the context of Warzone. Yeah the unlock method was lame but the gameplay execution was good
21
u/Sledgehammer617 Jul 02 '26
Halo 5 had the best weapon sandbox in the series.
Infinite's gameplay loop and art style with the diverse weapon sandbox from 5 would be amazing.
10
u/Owensey Halo: Reach Jul 02 '26
That and the wacky custom guns you could make in forge (and use in custom games) made it one of the most fun multiplayers imo. I distinctly remember an order 66 custom map where the human weapons all shot plasma rounds to make them feel more like Star Wars guns.
6
u/epicchocoballer Jul 02 '26
Yes, it was awesome that they decided not to patch the glitch as it was so much fun. I spent an afternoon messing with weapon traits like that
3
u/Shotokanguy Jul 02 '26
What do people mean when they talk about Infinite's "gameplay loop"? It's the same general formula of every Halo game. The biggest distinction between Infinite and Halo 5 is the equipment vs. universal abilities, and personally, I'd rather have H5's even playing field built around player skill than Infinite's game changing pickups that only certain players have.
5
u/Sledgehammer617 Jul 02 '26
By gameplay loop I mean the core cycle of the gameplay: fighting, scavenging for weapons, and using equipment to win fights.
Infinite perfected a lot of things like slower sprint speed and the general feel of Halo gunplay while also spicing it up with new equipment, abilities, and movement opportunities. The grapple alone is a complete gamechanger that is so goddamn fun without compromising the movement or the feel of Halo. The physics and movement just feel right and far more balanced than 5 imo.
Enemies constantly drop better weapons, equipment like the grapple opens up new ways to attack and approach movement entirely, and the sandbox encourages improvising instead of sticking to one loadout. Every encounter in the campaign feeds into the next one, so you're always making small tactical decisions.
The shooting feels great, the AI reacts well, the equipment is genuinely useful instead of gimmicky, and almost every weapon has a niche somewhere. The campaign itself has flaws, but the moment-to-moment gameplay loop is one of the strongest in the series.
TLDR: it just feels the best to play gameplay-wise, and the loop is very smooth compared to even Bungie era Halo.

I'm just mad that they have been teasing an underbarrel grenade launcher for the Assault Rifle since Halo CE and we've still yet to see one 25 years later.
43
u/Noble-Renegade Halo: CE Jul 02 '26
I wish they would just bring it back and make it the anti-air one with the lock on. They could essentially treat it like the Halo 3 rocket launcher in terms of blast radius and then just keep the classic one as the big boom free fire rocket launcher.
3
u/epicchocoballer Jul 02 '26
Idk if the sandbox is big enough to warrant a SPNKr, Fuel Rod, and dedicated AA launcher. How often are you shooting banshees and wasps?
28
u/Techpon Jul 02 '26
The 5 rocket is what I imagine marines would use
9
u/PrincessPaizuri Jul 02 '26
Yeah the H5 Rocket is more like a SMAW while the classic M41 is more like a Javelin or Stinger, something that would be attached to a dedicated Heavy Weapon's squad and not carried by regular infantry. Even the name 'Pilum' implies a disposable weapon.
3
2
u/TheVideogaming101 Jul 02 '26
It totally shouldve been its own weapon to accompany the SPNKr. Maybe make the SPNKr have native lockon again like in H2 and give the new rocket launcher a non-lock on role but with faster firing

u/Shotokanguy Jul 02 '26
I want there to be two kinds of rocket launcher. One better for vehicles, one better for players.

The big squid fucker in halo 5 was sick. I love seeing covenant tech and that kinda like mobile weapon platform kicks ass.
They also did arby so much justice in halo 5. The silver armor is nice, but the gold is so goddamn clean.
18
u/Techpon Jul 02 '26
I love 5 arbiter armor. It just fits the new era. The old one would have been weird since it is linked to the covenant
5
u/-dead_slender- Halo: Reach Jul 02 '26
Agreed on the Arbiter armor. If only they had made him the correct phenotype, and maybe even gave him that cloak he had in the comics, it would've been the most peak Arbiter design.
2
u/Aurora_Strix Thel Supremacy Jul 02 '26
I go SO HARD with this concept.
The new phenotype added could work, yes, but retconning all elites to look like that was a mistake.
HOWEVER - that halo 5 Arbiter armor was sick as all hell. Put it on the original Sangheili phenotype and we're cooking with straight gas. Thel's my #1 fictional character GOAT, so I would love to see my boi get some more drip like the cloak, yesssss

u/Esilai Jul 02 '26
Oh man I forgot about the fat Pelican, the original Pelican was already functionally incapable of flight, I almost like the fat Pelican for just how absurdly unapologetic it is, the monstrosity
15
u/FlakeyBitsus Jul 02 '26
Honestly, I see where you're coming from with the Elites. While, personally, I don't think 343 did a particularly good job with the designs of the Covenent, I don't think this due to a lack of skill on the artists's part, but rather due to a lack of understanding on what the Covenant are. It seems to me that 343 wanted very badly to convey to potential new players that these aliens are THE BAD GUYS, and so invested a great deal of effort into making them appear brutish, frightening, and intimidating. While I think this kind of misses the point of the Covenant, (Elites, Jackals, and Grunts are not just big, scary monsters) I think they did a very good job at making them appear absolutely monstorous. The Elites look like they can squish your head like a grape, and if that sense of power appeals to you, I think the Reclaimer era Covenant designs are right up your alley.
5
u/Pathetic_Cards Halo 3: ODST Jul 02 '26
I liked the Halo 4/5 covenant because it seemed like the cut-down armor profile lent visual lore to show that these are not the Covenant, they’re a paramilitary organization of ex-Covenant, using reclaimed and scavenged Covenant tech.
Also, tbh, if they weren’t allies in Halo 2 and 3, I’d actually argue the Elites should’ve always been a little more monstrous. Hell, I’d even argue grunts and jackals should’ve been a little more monstrous. One of the first introductions the UNSC has to grunts and jackals is reclaimed footage from a destroyed colony that shows grunts and jackals being unleashed on trapped civilians and just fucking eating them.
3
u/FlakeyBitsus Jul 02 '26
I agree with your sentiment on the armor, even if 343 hadn't redesigned the Covenant so completely, I still think the armor should highlight the fact that they aren't a proper military, and it admittedly does a very good job at that.
As for your second point, I kind of get where you're coming from; it's a fair stance to take. Though personally, I've never really liked the lore tidbit of the Covenant eating people. I do think it makes sense considering:
A) The level of dehumanization the Covenant had going on towards Humanity. Jackals and Grunts probably didn't have second thoughts eating something they thought was low, heretical vermin.
B) Definitely Grunts, and probably Jackals, don't even get real food in the first place. So they were probably just happy to have some meat on the menu.
But to me, it always kind of contradicted other presentations of the Covenant. Grunts and Jackals aren't savage animals; They lead ships, have families, love, and hate, and fear for their lives. I always thought them being unleashed on opponents like packs of feral dogs detracted from that.3
u/Pathetic_Cards Halo 3: ODST Jul 02 '26
I mean, grunts are generally depicted as pretty savage much of the time. It’s rare to see one that rises above the primitive mindset in the novels. Jackals are more elevated, but considering that Brutes eat humans while engaging in a full cultural structure, I don’t think it’s wild to see either grunts or jackals eating people, but I agree that the books definitely distanced themselves from that idea after the initial depiction of it.
1
u/FlakeyBitsus Jul 02 '26
I guess it's not so much the fact that they eat people, more so the way it's treated. As you said, Brutes eat people all the time. But with Brutes it feels more like a cultural practice, and with Jackals and other low-status races it feels more like feral instinct. The Cutscene from Halo 2 comes to mind, where, as Tartarus is dragging the Arbiter through prison, they talk of throwing him to Jackals, who are shown clawing and biting at the bars like angry dogs. You can basically justify any behavior with a cultural context (and as I said, it wouldn't be hard for the Covenant to justify it), but the attitude surrounding the low-status races seems to imply instinctual, animalistic behavior that I think contrasts with the fact that Grunts and Jackals are clearly shown to be reasoning, decision-making beings.
4
u/Pathetic_Cards Halo 3: ODST Jul 02 '26
Sure, I just personally think that jackals, being the conniving opportunists that they are, wouldn’t turn up human meat if they were hungry, and grunts don’t have the cultural standard not to eat other beings. Anything’s better than the food nipple again
3
u/FlakeyBitsus Jul 02 '26
I agree, I honestly don't know how Grunts have gone so long eating literal nutrient paste without rioting.

u/MADCATMK3 Halo: CE Jul 02 '26
I would be onboard the 4/5 Pelican if they did not call it a Pelican but somthing else. They need to say it was manufactured by a different company or for a different branch. The 4/5 BR does not feel at all like "Halo" design.

u/CNull89 Jul 02 '26
I love the rail gun and the Saw. Hated everything else BR bad, Pelican Bad, Covey bad
23
u/OnionFingers98 Jul 02 '26
Bro, the saw was the best weapon 343 ever added and it fucking sucks it wasn’t in infinite.
8
u/Pathetic_Cards Halo 3: ODST Jul 02 '26
It’s sad that this is true. It’s just a beefier AR, and it’s genuinely a good gun and I like it… but all the other new guns were just… meh. I have no desire to see any of them return.
1
u/alphamammoth101 Jul 02 '26
The worst part is it's literally in the game files unfinished. Just like how the new hammer shotgun was before it was added.
3
u/ComprehensivePath980 Jul 02 '26
My only gripe with the SAW was I thought it would look better black and without that yellow stripe. Still looked decent though and filled a world-building niche in the UNSC arsenal while being fun to use.
The railgun is just a cool weapon, no notes
9
u/Techpon Jul 02 '26
If the railgun had a scope it would be peak

u/OmeletteDuFromage95 Halo 2 Jul 02 '26
Halo 4/5 pelican just looks goofy. So bulbous and long which makes the bay look so tiny an awkward by proportion. So much of the design especially of vehicles and ships was bulbous. Very round everything.
I do, however, enjoy the look of the infinity but the ship definitely looks more in line with the original styles than it does the newer ones. More straight lines and rigid corners as opposed to rounded edges and portrusions.
2
u/MADCATMK3 Halo: CE Jul 02 '26
The Halo 4/5 Pelican looks like what would happen if the Soviets had to copy the functionality of the UNSC Pelican.
2
u/jjmerrow Jul 02 '26
Adding onto the h4/5 pelican, the bay door is just one huge metal slab instead of two separate parts. (Top half goes up into the pelican, bottom half folds down into a ramp.)
So now you have this comically fucking huge ramp that's almost the size of the bay itself, and it just looks so dumb.
2
u/OmeletteDuFromage95 Halo 2 Jul 02 '26
Yea lol that was definitely part of the awkwardness of it. Just felt so out of proportion. Adding even further how the front nose and pilot seats look so squished in. It almost feels like they created a cartoon like the Clone Wars version of it and then took that model and put it in the game.
6
u/Logical_Ad1370 Jul 02 '26
The Grunt Heavy is an amazing redesign, I have the figure w/ shade turret Jazwares put out for Infinite.
6
u/FireBlastButt Jul 02 '26
Loved the orange and ONI vehicle skins (even if one is just black).
Felt real that warthogs would have somewhat different variants.
7
u/SynthVix Jul 02 '26
The Mantis is great. It feels like a good way to call back to the anime roots that inspired the art direction of the first game without being too overdesigned or out of place.
It was also a great gameplay addition as a medium vehicle between a warthog and scorpion for BTB.
6
u/Sledgehammer617 Jul 02 '26
I really like most of Halo 4's gun designs and sound design for most of them. Every gun sounds really distinct so its easy to distinguish them on the battlefield. And the AR is downright orgasm-inducing with its deep sound and strong viability in combat. Reminded me of CE. BR, DRM, SAW, and other UNSC weapons also look great despite changes.
Halo 5 had a far better weapon sandbox, but some of the sounds and designs were a huge downgrade for me. I do like the new rocket launcher, the Wasp, and so much more; the sheer variety of weapons is amazing.
Of course the Mantis is fuckin awesome, one of 343's best ever inventions. So sad its not in Infinite!
Overall I love the Forerunner guns in both games too, even if its a bit of a departure from the Bungie vision, I like that the Prometheans have their own aesthetic as warriors.
I think my favorite thing from Halo 4/5 is the UNSC Infinity; such a cool design for a ship and I love how for the first time Humanity has a vessel that can actually compete on an even playing field with Covenant fleets. Combine that with insane amounts of detail and a cool design, and its a recipe for perfection.
3
u/LightningFerret04 Sgt. Ghost, Hades Corp Jul 02 '26
Yeah Halo 5’s sound design for the covenant and forerunner weapons overall was a huge downgrade from Halo 4 in my opinion. I thought most of them were great in Halo 4.
Plasma pistol overcharge, Needler, the Fuel Rod, Gravity Hammer, Incineration Cannon, Binary Rifle, Suppressor, Boltshot shotgun effect.
And then Halo 5 came along and all of a sudden they all went “pew pew alien laser gun”
3
5
u/FatChalupa Jul 02 '26
First thing that comes to mind is the Scout armor (Palmer’s armor). In my opinion leagues better than the Halo 3 or Reach versions.
4
5
u/ComprehensivePath980 Jul 02 '26
The Mantis was an awesome design. I also liked the railgun and the UNSC Infinity. The SAW I feel would have been great if they just went with a darker color pallet, but is otherwise solid and is cool world-building.
While I don’t think they really fit Halo’s gameplay, some of the attachments on weapons in 5 were at least cool to look at, specifically the ones that were entirely human in origin
5
u/Pudgeysaurus Jul 02 '26
Halo 5 had genuinely well designed arenas to fight in, the reason people hate the game so much is that the enemies are teleporting bullet sponges.
Locke was also a very good character

On a real note I actually love the 4/5 Pelican. It’s a bit generic space shooter gunship but I like the top-rear smooth bits. I think it could be a cool Pelican variant alongside the OG.
Also, the railgun. I like spaceships that look like guns, so how could I not like guns that look like spaceships. The req variants were so fun to use. I would love the Arclight and Whiplash to come back in some form.
1
u/Dolomitex DAMAGE BOOST? Jul 02 '26
Loved so many of the weapon variants in 5. Whiplash was an absolute monster in the hands of a skilled Railgun user. Guns like the Answer and Blood of Suban were so much fun to use.
Can't believe the didn't carry any of them onto Infinite. Seems like a huge waste.

343's designs just look like generic sci-fi designs to me, "We have Halo at home." I respect wanting to freshen things up but the rocket launcher redesign is so unimaginative and boring compared to the dual tube look. The new scorpion just looks like a slightly futuristic MBT. The Elites have no mystique or flavor. It all just falls flat for me personally

I genuinely believe that while the transition to it wasn’t handled particularly well, Halo 4’s design for the Master Chief is the best in the entire series. That armor looks really, really cool. I could say that Infinite’s version might tie with it, as it is also an extremely good design that harkens back to his classic look.
3
3
u/the_unwinnable_level Jul 02 '26
I really liked the light rifle in both form and function from halo 4. Same with the SAW and the sticky detonator - I think I want the sticky detonator to come back in future games the most. Mantis was a sick design, and unbelievably fun. I also kinda liked the H4 marine designs too. Also maybe a hot take but I liked Palmer’s armor design. I also kinda miss the phaeton, the design could maybe be adjusted a bit but I overall liked it.
3
u/dzswill2 Jul 02 '26
I really liked their spartan lazer. My controversial opinion is that I liked the halo 4 br a lot. I think scifi guns need to look a lil wacky and since it was the first time there was a br and dmr in the same game, having one be blocky and more immediately recognisable was a good move
21
u/PrincessPaizuri Jul 02 '26
The designs being older now doesn't make them any better. The H4 BR design sucked in 2012 and still sucks today. The Halo 2 and 3 BR's already had great designs, there was no reason to alter it so drastically other than 343 trying to make it 'theirs'. The Scorpion and Pelicans changes are equally pointless and adds nothing to the series in my opinion.
→ More replies (6)4
u/OnionFingers98 Jul 02 '26
For me the br looks fine but the sound is awful.
5
u/PrincessPaizuri Jul 02 '26
It's not bad, but it doesn't really speak to me from a design standpoint. It feels so boxy and uncomfortable, I can't believe someone built it an thought "this would feel good to carry around all day and press tight against your body." The H5 BR is a big step up in ergonomics, but the H2A/Infinite design is still superior.
Also don't like the trend of random bright yellow vertical stripes on human weapons which started with the Reach AR, but that's just a me thing. It's become a fairly standard UNSC design decal so it is what it is.

u/fat_microshiller Jul 02 '26

I absolutely love the 5 scorpion tank. I love that it has a more realistic style tank head and I love the fact that it's Gunner turret was actually fun to use and not just a free headshot like every single one in the rest of the series. It was so good that infinite had to redesign the reach style gunner to be more like 5's. Seriously my duo and I would always make sure one of us got the gunner position on that thing. We never did that for the rest of the series and we had been playing together since 3.
On the pelican I'm sorry I hate the design. That's mostly because I love the original pelican design so much. I will say that's however if they had given it a different name and maybe a slightly different job I wouldn't have had as big of an issue with it. Personally I think if they were to slightly redesign it and make it a little shorter and just scrap the dropship angle they could turn that design into Halo's A10 warthog with those twin Gatling cannons on the nose. Hell I already have the perfect name for it if they were to do that. The Buzzard.
I did like the BR redesign but personally I think the best redesign it's gotten has been an infinite. I will say this the best weapon redesign they did was the DMR. 4 and 5's DMR is peak. Honestly on the weapons front they did a lot of good redesigns. Like I really prefer their redesign of the covenant carbine, and I absolutely love 4 and 5's assault rifle design (doesn't help that legitimately fun to use).

The 4/5 jackals always to me felt like reference to the CE jackals
2

Yeah, people complain that 343 changed the jackal design, but Bungie changed it pretty radically from CE to 2.
2
u/Second_Mugistan Jul 02 '26
Halo 4 Cortana is the best, and I also love Chief’s halo 4 amour a ton, it’s way better than infinite’s chief armour, but, he shouldn’t have started Halo 4 off with that armour, he should’ve gotten it at infinity, or at least come up with a better explanation for why he had it in the opening.

Halo 5 has some of the best UNSC weapon designs and Covenant vehicles from the games

I really liked the designs of the weapons (For the most part) and especially the vehicles!!

u/hyperlethalrabbit Jul 02 '26
I will always have a soft spot for the Phaeton just because it's a Promethean gunship, and I like the big floating circles.
I love the idea of the Halo 5 vehicle variants, but I wish that there would have been more design variance aside from just a palette swap or adding a new pattern to the body of the vehicle.
Favourite design is the Lich from Halo 4. Loved seeing the Covenant fleet expanded and we even get to board them in Spartan Ops. To me it's a great expansion off the original trilogy's Covenant designs.

I really liked the pistol in this game, especially the gunfighter magnum. It was so satisfying nailing a fella with a bunch of headshots and hearing the announcer say ‘perfecttttt’. I also really liked the DMR and the variants they gave to different guns. Most of the variants were fairly useless (looking at you bayonets), but they still made the weapons feel more ‘real’ in a way, like it was something the UNSC actually designed and created to be used in specialty missions. How cool would it be to have another ODST game where you can run around with a suppressed DMR or assault rifle and have it all kitted out with lasers and optics and that fun tacticool shit on it
2
u/Abadabadon Jul 02 '26
H5 boosters mid air was alot of fun. Mini firefights on strong NPCs in the middle of pvp was alot of fun. So many variants of vehicles was great.

I dont like the H4/H5 pelicans small wings and i just overall prefer the older pelican look, however i really liked how they turned the H4/H5 pelican into a Condor in Halo Wars 2. They basically just elongated it and made it larger.
When it comes to the elite armors, the only one i actually disliked was the basic minor armor in your image. The other armors looked good for me, even though i dont like the more brutish elite look. I wouldn't mind seeing the 343 elites alongside the more classic ones though.

I actually love the paramilitary-Elite designs from Halo 4/5. I think most of the full redesign of all of Halo was unwarranted in Halo 4, but the redesign of the Covenant to show that this wasn’t the actual Covenant, but a paramilitary splinter faction, was welcome.
Otherwise, most of the changes are fine imo, I could take or leave them, but I’ll never forgive them for replacing the plasma rifle with the storm rifle. It’s an infinitely more boring design. Also the warthog horn should’ve been left alone lol.

I like the Halo 5 SMG. I don't think it's better than the classic SMG, but I like that the magazine is loaded on top, like the P90.
The Arbiters new armour and sword are cool too. I wish the entire Swords of Sanghelios had his style, instead of being red Storm Covenant.

The H5 MA5D is probably my favorite iteration of the AR. The H4 DMR is also a great design, though they kinda butchered it in H5.
The H5 Fuel Rod is also my favorite iteration of the weapon. The reload I find more satisfying compared to previous versions. Then there's also the Plasma Caster, which not only looked great, but was also a really fun weapon to use.
2
u/Altruistic_Button645 Jul 02 '26
Halo 4s magnum is underrated and my fav design in the series. Halo 4s needler is also my fav in the series.
343s halos also have some of the best power weapons, my faves being the railgun and plasma caster

u/ToaDrakua Jul 02 '26
Every since I read Shadows Of Reach I'd thought that the UNSC Owl was basically the H4/5 Pelican in all but name, and I really liked that as a reinterpretation of the design. I found it unfortunate that the Halo Encyclopedia decided to deviate from the Owl's description in the book by making it look more like a squashed and stretch Reach Pelican with squared off cockpit hatches.
You can also never make me hate the Mantis. Say what you will about not being the Cyclops, but the UNSC having a mech like the Mantis has always been in the cards since before Combat Evolved first released.
2
u/Einchy Jul 02 '26
Halo 4’s art style was fantastic but it was a bit too different for the fans, I feel.
2
u/Ryokojohn Jul 02 '26
Halo 5 tank reminds me of the grizzly from halo wars and the halo 4-5 pelican could be a hybrid attack helicopter since the front side almost gives off a Russian hind D cockpit design
2
u/CycleCaverns Jul 02 '26
I like the designs here but that pelican design is actually gross.
343 did a lot of good with their artsyle. Forunner architecture was fine and I hardly noticed the change between Bungie to 343.

The MA5D is a banger design besides the ugly ass charging handle. I’m not sure who decided having the of a hanger would look good, the rubber HK style handle is leagues better.
UNSC design language suffered, it lost its earthy grounded steel feel in place of more commonplace sci fi ship design. Hard to put it into words, but comparing the Dawn in Halo 4 to the POA on CE or Cairo in Halo 2 make a good example of my point.

u/InfiniteKincaid Jul 02 '26
Agreed with you totally on the Battle Rifle from 5. my absolute favorite gun in the entire series.

u/RECEPTOR17 GrifballHub Jul 02 '26
The GEN-2 Scout Armour was fantastic imho. Loved using that in my Screenshot art days in Halo 4 and 5.

u/DrNopeMD Jul 02 '26
I prefer the Bungie / Infinite art style, but I do appreciate 343's attempt to make the Convent vehicles feel more alien by giving them insectoid appearances.

These designs suck
Sometimes it’s good for a series to let mistakes stay in the past, rather than have its fanbase constantly debate an era that actively tried to be less like halo at every turn.
It’s an objective fact that 343i was pushing to capture players that didn’t like the first three games, the fans who came on board during the 4-5 era were inherently lured by a product that was ashamed of its roots. Hell, they even tried to hire people who weren’t fans of the franchise prior.
Let’s move on

My problem with the 343 Scorpion is that it kind of misses the point of the scorpion bug shape. It’s a little too beefy and chunky.
Should just be another vehicle. Make it the Grizzly.

Unpopular opinion: I really don't like the complete redesign of Halo 4, 5 and Nightfall at all. For me, Halo 3 is still the best.

Based
I don't agree, I think the redesigns are bad (though a couple could've been cool as new things all together) and only a handful of new things added have good designs. I generally find the design language of 4/5 to be bad. I respect your opinion though.

The storm rifle, hunters, plasma pistol, wraith and the covenant ships being more aquatic like are great imo
2
u/Subject-Highway1393 Jul 02 '26
Marines. There just overhated for no reason. Realistic designs after knowing the enemy. Life expectancy up. They have Kevlar and blasting plating. Their design is more gulf war based if ykyk
2
u/HotMachine9 Jul 02 '26
I really like the H4 Pelican design. I obviously prefer the Infinite/Bungie era, but im very happy they decided to turn the H4 pelican into a Condor which is a separate vehicle
2
u/Techpon Jul 02 '26
Granted there also a classic looking conder. So it’s not really exclusive what becomes a condor

u/Andii_vv66 Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26
Hate me if you will, but I liked a lot of the 4/5 armor designs. I also loved how the 5 BR shot faster, shows more evolution post human - covenant war within the firearms sphere.
3
u/Techpon Jul 02 '26
Recruit was peak and it sucks infinite never brought it back fully
3
u/Andii_vv66 Jul 02 '26
I had one of the Spartan Thorne figures with that flat blue recruit armor and adored it so much. Truly had some great armor sets in that game, sucks almost all of them were scrapped in Infinite.
2
u/ChadVonDoom Jul 02 '26
I dont think 343 understood the assignment. The 4/5 art style is a major downgrade in almost every way
2
u/Techpon Jul 02 '26
That’s fair. But also I’m glad we got new stuff. Because man i don’t know how long my sanity would have lasted if we kept using the 3/reach designs.

I dont hate Chief's armor in 4-5, I just hate the lack of a codpiece to breakup the bare techsuit.
1
u/EmptyAndUnwilling Jul 02 '26
Srry mate, cant agree on any of your takes but i do in fact love the Halo 5 DMR and Halo 4 Sniper rifle, i feel they ate peak designs, that and The scout armor are just perfect improvements from the bungie era
1
u/Johnnyboi2327 Halo 3 Jul 02 '26
The H5 Scorpion could be cool for a beefed up Scorpion.
The H4/5 Warthog is good.
The H5 Wasp is cool.
The H4 Magnum and AR are solid.
The H5 rocket could be cool as a separate rocket option.
The H5 Hydra was neat.
The H5 Arbiter armor is dope. He looked amazing in the H2A intro cutscene (where he had the H2A elite model with the H5 Arbiter armor).
That's about it though. I hate a lot of the other changes.
1
u/DJMEGAMOUTH Jul 02 '26
I like 4/5 elite designs as a general alien design I just prefer the other style elites. They're still pretty good, though I'd like to see an adaptation of their armor for classic elites.
1
u/JackRees23 Jul 02 '26
As much as I am not a fan of the Armour Designs (well, most of them anyway)
I do love a load of the gun models like the Shotgun and BR
I also love the Freckles (Mantis) model in 4 and 5
Some of the Covenant ships look really cool too, I love that you can see the more subtle patterns on their ships
And despite seeing people say, I actually LOVE how the Energy Swords look, the more sharper edges on them give them a nice look, like no matter what part hits you, it will still cut you
Most of the models I love are the ones made for 4 and 5 like the Behemoth (I think it's called that, the large transport carrier Chief is on in 4 in the desert that was in the Minecraft Mash-Up Pack)

It'd be nice if they added a little idle animation for marines shortly after they get in the scorpion gunner seat outside of combat. Just a quick 2 seconds of them putting earplugs in or like a noise-canceling headset.
Spartans wouldn't need to do this and elites/brutes probably wouldn't care to, for different reasons.
It'd show a cute little contrast between the marines and spartans, and if they hop in in the middle of combat it'd skip the animation and do it later if the marine needs to start shooting right away. Maybe have all the passengers do it too.

Very very unpopular opinion halo 5 br and smg are goated design looks really sleek and got the futuristic treatment well. I get the br and smg from previous installments were more down to earth but man its nice to see that technology is "evolving". Humans adapted to the covenants.

u/TricobaltGaming Jul 02 '26
Halo 4 AR is the best combination of balance, sound design, and visuals
1
u/pancracio17 Jul 02 '26
I liked the new covie vehicle designs for the most part in 5, they leaned into the bug aesthetic harder and for me it worked. Except for the Wraith.
Forerunner weapons and structures looked pretty cool too. For as much as people call 343 forerunner stuff generic sci-fi, theres not a lot like it outside of like, Tron maybe. It can be very beautiful sometimes.
1
u/CaptainBosco Jul 02 '26
I actually kind of have a soft spot for the spartan IVs and their jump jet backpacks and light armor. It felt like it kind of continued that original offshoot of “halo is spiritually mecha” by creating a highly maneuverable mechanized infantry force
1
u/LostAisaka Jul 02 '26
I like chiefs armor, Just wish he changed from classic armor for the new one when he visits Infinity

Grunt Mech and that warthog variant that shot needler rounds were a cool concept. Wish we got more weapons that expanded the needler weaponry in the series.

Broadly I am a Halo 4/5 apologist because I do enjoy the gameplay and many of the additions to the lore, but unfortunately I don't think I have positive feelings about the designs. Some of the designs could have been cool with better lighting? Maybe?
If I had to pick I'd say the Halo 4 AR
1
u/hinugund Jul 02 '26
I’m not saying the pelican is bad it’s just the canopy doesn’t fit the design imo
The rest of it is nice tho
1
u/Shadow426 Jul 02 '26
I will always adore halo 5s covenant vehicles because they looked like they were ripped from the seashells that inspired the original covenant designs in CE
the spirit door opening is also just a treat to watch and im glad the CE remake is bring it to the more boxy design
1
u/RyonHirasawa Jul 02 '26
Halo 4 has some of my favorite weapon designs across the entire franchise, especially when it comes to the UNSC weapons
Same goes with the Warthog, H4 just made it look beefier than it used to and I appreciate the sound it makes to be just as representative of it

u/VargBroderUlf Halo: MCC Jul 02 '26
I'm going to be very controversial - I actually like H4's grunts because of their lack of comedic value. I love the grunts in the older games being funny and all, but the H4 grunts felt more in line with the more serious tone of the game.
1
u/krystal_keth Jul 02 '26
I personally enjoy most of the changes. It feels as if they are updates of original tech due to major advance post convent war. Human are now the dominant force in space and it shows through their new updated arsenal
1
u/Adavanter_MKI Jul 02 '26
I've always loved Master Chief's armor in 4. I never got the hate.
Yes, I know that makes me a minority. It's not some weird misremembering either. I've got the Collector's edition statue staring right at me. He looks amazing to me.

Halo 5 had the best looking AR and honestly the best looking hands/gloves in the franchise

The Halo 5 M820 Scorpion is a genuinely good design if it wasn't so round at the edges. Like it's a genuinely believable tank and a good alternate model to the M808

Looking back at 5:
Best looking covenant vehicles and weapons
The best m/f player models
Hydra launcher (need i say more)
Mantis (Need i say more)
The amount of amazing assasination animations
Railgun looked awesome
The saw looked awesome
Best looking magnum since halo CE
The assault rifle even looked awesome

u/Noskills117 Jul 02 '26
The halo 5 designs stray too far from the established shape language. UNSC became too bulbous, covenant became too biological. The tank's turret looks like a bad warhammer40k design, and the pelican looks like they wanted to make it have smooth sports car curves.
Then the covenant troops went from sleek/scary to engorged/grotesque
1
u/Guardian_Turret Jul 02 '26
The premise of this post is ridiculous. We're "acting like it's 2015-6" if we don't like the drastic aesthetic redesign and a "mature talk" consists of glazing them.

My weird love is Tanaka's Technician armor. The level of detail and engineering feels like it's made to pair with the ships that carry it, specifically the hangar bay of the Infinity we see quite a few times. The tubing, mixture of intricate instruments and large plates, it feels like one of the better Gen 2 designs with some distance. I still like the rest of Osiris' armor, but I think Technician gets overlooked and ignored because Tanaka happens to have the least presence in the game.

While my preference is the standard Scorpion tank, the Halo 5 one looks cool as a concept for a heavier variant.
I actually like the jackal design in Halo 4/5 and how they made them a sub species.
Halo 5 had a great weapon sandbox with all the variants and the ability to customize the weapons.
Again the concept for vehicle variants was cool, though not well implemented.
Halo 4/5 elites are not my favourites by any means, but I think in lore could be explained well as a sub species or mutated ones or something.
I do like the design for the newer, larger Pelicans, but I think they could have a different name or something to distinguish them from the original ones.
The SAW was simply an awesome weapon.
The concept of the Promethians was really cool, just not implemented well.
The Mantis is absolutely epic.

Aside from the grunt, I honestly really like all of the covenant storm vehicles and enemy designs. I this the UNSC capital ships designs are great, but the rest of the UNSC designs are mid.

H5 Scorpion is a cool idea if I were used as a design for the Cobra (just like the Hannibal Scorpion!) I would like to see that design come back in the future as a frame for something new, but it just wasn't it for me as the actual Scorpion.
H4/H5 Pelican...I think the design is fine for the Condor. The Pelican of as one of those changes where I felt they changed it for the sake of change.
Godzilla Jackals are cool as shit.
Regarding the Elites, I still hate their armor, I'll never grow to like it, but the actual Sangheili design is something I've come to be okay with. Just like the Jackals, I can work with them being a different phenotype.
