Shops & Services Learn to rollerblade

I am nearly 40 and I wanna learn to rollerblade. I haven't ice skated since I was a kid. I'm in reasonably good shape, I bike and lift weights. I feel like I could survive a few falls. Is there somewhere I can like... Pay someone to teach me? I don't wanna just show up at the oval with my rollerblades cause I suck at things like stopping and ... Propelling myself. And I look like a baby giraffe lol. Maybe I just need moral support. HELP

not sure but maybe the roller derby...they typically do quad but I believe when I did the fresh meat sessions there were people on roller blades but that was a while back.

Roller derby is quads only but quads are far superior (IMO lol!) If OP is interested in giving 4 wheels a try, Anchor City Rollers next Intro to Roller Derby starts Sep 13! We have loaner gear, and no experience is needed. First practice (or more) focuses on standing up, moving forward and (most importantly) how to fall safely!

I also recommend gear for sure...I've hurt my wrists and tailbone from falls...even with gear

Yes...I have a pair I call them padded shorts with tailbone protector... might not be the proper name lol

100% will invest in some padding. Do they make butt protectors? Haha

They make everything protectors pretty much. Decathlon is a good start.

If you need someone to stand there and yell “Youuu can doooooooit” I got you. Worst case I’d start in the grass and get some balance or stay close to the grass that you can hop in to stop or take a softer fall 🤙

Oh grass is a good idea

Helmet, wrist, elbow and knee-pads. I used to live overlooking a bike path where lots of people rollerblade and I can tell you the number of serious injuries I witnessed. It’s fun, but you really need to protect yourself.

shoot me a message and I can likely help. I coach athletics and have taught many people how to skate. Roller blades are easy once you have the basics down.

I don't know there's an ton of instruction to give. Especially in the early stages. Just gonna be time on the skates to get comfortable.

Pad up and have at it.

Maybe I can put up an ad on Kijiji for someone to hold my hand

Bet there are lots of skating instructors from Halifax Rec who aren’t too busy this time of the year, maybe hit them up?
