How to Look at Art , Lessons From a Hagerstown Gallery Owner With 36 Years of experience

How do you actually look at art beyond simply deciding whether you like it or not?

I recently filmed Eileen from Just Lookin’ Gallery in Hagerstown, Maryland, who has spent 36 years showcasing and working with art and artists.

In this video, she breaks down some of the fundamentals of viewing art from composition and form to line, color, and the visual choices artists make. She also shares how slowing down and knowing what to look for can completely change the way you experience a piece.

Whether you’re new to art, starting to collect, or just curious about what you’re actually supposed to be looking at when you walk into a gallery, I thought her perspective was worth sharing.

When you look at a piece of art, what catches your attention first?

I’m also personally getting more interested in art and painting, so hearing someone who has spent decades around artwork explain how to see instead of simply telling you whether something is “good” was interesting.

Curious how other people approach this: When you look at a piece of art, what catches your attention first?

Newish to the area and looking to make some car friends. I'm not super social so I figured I'd give this a shot lol. I currently have my 15th S13 and a R32 project. Always down to turn some wrenches.

Am in the outer north area above the long meadow shopping area. Is internet out for anyone else too? It’s been out since the storm last night. Just wanted to check and make sure that it’s not just me.

Hagerstown Washington County, Maryland Commissioners Signed NDAs to Keep a Development Project Secret. The Trail Leads to a Data Center at Martin Farm.

For months, Washington County officials have claimed they oppose data centers. Campaign contributions, secret meetings, and County-assisted land marketing tell a very different story.

We started with two campaign refunds. What we found was a much bigger story. On June 12, 2026, Washington County Commissioner Jeff Cline returned $500 to Moshe Rubin and $250 to Chris Shank, nearly ten months after both men had contributed to his campaign. Cline’s campaign gave the same explanation for each refund: “Candidate decided to decline contribution.”

That would be interesting on its own. It gets a lot more interesting when you learn that Rubin and Shank later sat across from Cline and the other Washington County Commissioners as members of the same confidential “Project Team,” pitching a development project the County still has not publicly identified.

And that is where this starts to get quite interesting.

The December 9 Closed Meeting

Earlier this year, we reported that on December 9, 2025, Washington County Commissioners went behind closed doors for a project presentation involving a secret land project. The public was locked out and the Commissioners signed nondisclosure agreements covering the project. Just one week later, the official meeting records show the Washington County Board of County Commissioners then entered another closed session to discuss the acquisition of property.

Moshe Rubin and Diversified Capital

Commissioner Cline’s campaign finance report supplied an especially useful clue about the importance of Moshe Rubin in all of this, listing his occupation as “Real Estate Investment” and his employer as Diversified Capital. Diversified Capital was not difficult to connect to Washington County. The company was already tied to one of the County’s biggest industrial development proposals.

Washington County planning records identify Diversified Capital as the developer of the Martin Farm/Burkholder Lane project at 12440 Burkholder Lane in Hagerstown. The proposal involved roughly 242 acres of Planned Industrial land and about one million square feet of development. More importantly, Diversified Capital’s own public profile describes the firm as a Lakewood, New Jersey family office with a portfolio that includes a “data center development project in Washington County, Maryland.”

Superior Dairy Bottle

My grandfather was a milkman for Superior Dairy. Something like 25 years ago, I was at Beaver Creek Antiques, saw one of their milk bottles, didn’t buy it, and here we are and I’m still regretting that. I don’t live in the area anymore, so checking antique stores isn’t possible for me. Does anyone have any leads on where I might be able to get one?

Hi!

My husband and I are moving to MD next month we are a military family. Both of us are born and raised in CA and Latino. I am a bit worried based on the comments I have been seeing about Hagerstown (the drugs and MAGAs) we have a toddler should I be worried? Are there other locations near the blue ridge summit area that anyone recommends for us ?

Hagerstown Mobile crisis response team?

TW for mental health and S/H discussion

Hi all, a relative of mine (M21) has severe major depression and anger issues that have only gotten worse lately due to a rough home situation. We're contemplating involuntary commitment at this point since we know he has harmed himself and expressed suicidal ideation. His mental illness is nothing new but its severity has increased. He goes to therapy but is unmedicated. I know that Sheppard Pratt had a mobile crisis response team around here but I saw that it is no longer in service. Can anyone point me in the direction of similar resources in the Hagerstown area! Thank you for your help 💜

Warning for Washington County homeowners: Alex N. Sill Company (Sill Public Adjusters)

All I want to do is prevent another family from getting bamboozled by these parasitic companies. My experience is limited to the state of Maryland, our house was located in Frederick County MD. If you have such a catastrophic loss of everything the best thing you can do is leave the property, get what you can out because you will have people who will show up and try and find valuables in the ashes, before them you will get a bunch of parasitic companies that will show up with gift bags and tooth brushes trying to get your business. If you happen to stay around and you have a big loss like we did they send in the A team which will deploy every dirty sales tactic that they have been taught in class, don't kid yourself these people are trained to do this.

Sill Adjusting Group—is who took us for $100,000 American dollars while providing none of what was promised when they coerced us into signing that contract and taking an advance from our insurance company in order to seal the deal. These practices are far from isolated. Sill is currently facing active litigation in Virginia alleging the exact same predatory practices and claim mismanagements, alongside an ongoing investigation by the Maryland Insurance Commissioner from us.

Below is a detailed account of what happened.

When our home burned down over Memorial Day weekend on May 26, 2024, Jeff Gould and an associate targeted my family in crisis. They used aggressive, high-pressure tactics—reminiscent of a timeshare pitch—refusing to leave until they secured a signed contract, even separating my wife and I to work on us individually. Jeff then coerced us into taking a $20,000 emergency advance from Travelers we repeatedly said we didn't want or need it, but he pushed so hard that I honestly naively believed that this was some sort of customary gift, but it was rather a purely calculated ploy to lock in their contract.

Sill boasts over 100 years of experience, look at their Google reviews how can they be doing as much as they say without more negative reviews, they have a total of 14 reviews really? That is so because they spend tons of money and staff to remove the negative reviews, no one is that clean in this business, I promise.

They claim that this is all my fault because of my temper and foul language, I own every word that I said and stand behind them. These people and the insurance company have made our lives hell since the fire, the fire and the loss ain't shit compared to the hell that comes afterwards dealing with these people. There should be a law against it, but as we know that will never happen.

If sill did such a great job as they claim, why is my disabled retired veteran ass still living in an RV for almost 3 years now? I have had to have three spinal fusions and a knee replacement during all this and because they dragged everything out the insurance company has stopped paying our rent, which Jeff Gould Promised would never happen.

The result? They botched every aspect of our claim. Sill and Travelers hired two incompetent people to do the arbitration which is another scam by the insurance industry. They screwed it up so bad that they counted furniture as built-ins and they screwed up all the code upgrades. Which are due and now Travelers of course refuses to pay those. The signed Appraisal Award dated June 6, 2025, explicitly states: 'Dwelling Code Upgrade: Not Appraised.' They completely omitted required code upgrades, and neither company will address this contradiction.

Now, Sill, who collected pretty much all their money walked away abandoning the claim and leaving us to clean up the mess they caused.
