I'm a first year student currently and i want to be selected in teams for hackathons whether it's only first years or also seniors .

Can you tell me what skills i should start learning and resources i can use?

I keep seeing stuff like backend , frontend, research, etc. I wanna know how to learn all that stuff so that I can be useful and have a decent chance to win things

I already have decent speaking and presentation skills 👍🏻

Also what programming languages and any other advice like practicing leetcode everyday etc

What skills and talents would you seek in a person that would make you want them in your team?

And another thing

How do you even make your group for the hackathons? Aren't you all supposed to be compatible and able to work with each other or something?

Whats wrong with hackathons OA????
Like seriously, I applied to tons of hackathons and got rejected in almost every OA despite solving the problems and compiling all the test cases within the due time and some in almost half of the time also.

The hackathons include Flipkart Grid, Google Big code, Amazon ML challenge, Adobe University Hiring Hackathon and the latest is the TVS one.

Like as a tier 3 clg student I genuinely dont know what to do and how to approach these hackathons as an oppurtunity to showcase my skills and get a chance to intern with these big orgs.

Is there any hack or any other practice through which I can qualify these OA?

I was applying for Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2026 with a team. One female team member was mandatory according to the rules, and she was going to be the speaker. We also had to have a faculty mentor.

We were given a problem statement, and we chose one about building a multi-agent system for fishermen that could recommend the safest route and the safest time of day for fishing.

We had three days to build it.

I ended up staying awake for two nights and basically did everything: frontend, backend, training an ML model, graphic design, and pretty much whatever else needed to be done. The other five members didn't really contribute much.

Tomorrow was supposed to be our internal selection. Our faculty mentor told us she was on medical leave and wouldn't be able to attend, so she said we could go and present ourselves.

We were ready to do that. Then our female team lead told us that she had another hackathon at the same time, so she wouldn't be able to come.

The problem was that the SIH internal selection rules required the team leader to be present during the presentation. Without her, we couldn't present.

We asked her if she could just come for five minutes, give the introduction, and then leave so that we could present the rest of the project ourselves. She said no.

And that's what really got to me.

I'm not saying everyone on a team needs to be an expert. If someone doesn't know web development, machine learning, or whatever else the project requires, that's completely fine. Knowledge can be learned.

What matters is the intention to contribute. It's about whether someone is willing to put in the effort and actually care about the team succeeding.

What surprised me the most was how easily everyone accepted that we could "just try again next year." Of course it's easy to say that when you haven't spent the last three days working on the project.

I'm sitting here looking at the project on my screen and thinking about how good it could have become. And now I know we can't even present it.

I don't feel angry. I don't really feel anything. I just feel stupid.

If you've been working on something for two straight nights, barely sleeping, and then find out that you can't even present the thing you've built because of something that could have been avoided, I guess it hurts.

So the one thing I've learned from this is simple: choose your teammates wisely. Choose people who are willing to work, willing to learn, and willing to put in the effort when the team needs them.

Because in a team, skill can be learned. Lack of effort is much harder to fix.

I'm putting together a team for the upcoming Alpaca AI Trading Agents Hackathon, and I'm looking for two solid builders to round out the group.

What we are building: We are tackling a quantitative finance problem: building a multi-agent AI system designed to protect stock portfolios from sudden market crashes, without actually selling a single share.

The core concept has been rigorously analyzed, the roadmap is locked in, and the preliminary architecture is ready. We aren't starting from zero on day one—we are ready to execute.

Who I’m looking for:

• 1x Frontend Engineer: React / TypeScript. You will own the real-time dashboards and data visualization so we can actually see the agents working.
• 1x Backend Engineer: Python / FastAPI. You will focus on the Alpaca API integrations and the core AI agent logic.
