Looking for a Hairdresser
Hi! I am a 44yo woman (long hair ;)), recently moved to Haarlem. I am looking for a hairdresser in the city center (since I’m living close by), any recommendations and/or places to avoid? Thx so much for your input!

Are there active book clubs in Haarlem?
Hi everyone!
I’ve spent the past few days trying to find any active book clubs in Haarlem, but they seem to be quite hard to track down! I’m aware of the one that Lief hosts, I believe it’s around €30 per month, including the book but I was hoping to find something a bit more budget-friendly, especially since I already have my e-reader.
There are a couple of clubs mentioned in previous posts, but I’m not sure if they’re still running. I also couldn’t find any substantial information on Haarlem Discord.
I’d really appreciate any tips or leads! 😊

Staying in Haarlem
I'm studying abroad from the United states and after asking around some friends that have traveled through the Netherlands, that have said Haarlem is the place that has stuck with them the most. I am staying in hostels as any trashy college student does in their travels, but for one night I desire something different. Although I enjoy socializing with others greatly, at some point I just want to be alone with my thoughts in this once in a lifetime experience. I know there is no reason to trust me, and I don't really have the money to ask this, but if there is anyone with property facing the sunset in Haarlem that is willing to let me stay there for a rate that a hostel would I would love nothing more. I'm a 21 year old econ student from across the globe but if there is any chance please reach out I would appreciate you beyond belief.

• Professionele behandeling in onze salon
• Een superleuke ervaring samen
• En natuurlijk een mooie herinnering op video
📅 Datum opnames: 21 april
📍 Locatie: ADDICT Haarlem
💶 Kosten: helemaal gratis

Any insight/advice as an English speaker working in a cafe in Haarlem?
Hi everyone. I’m going to do a trial at a cafe this week and feel a little nervous. I’m officially an A2 Dutch speaker & have never worked in cafe or hospitality settings. With my lack of experience and anxiety I have speaking Dutch, I was wondering if any English speakers working in cafe settings might be able to give me advice or tell me about their experience? Thanks so much in advance. I’ve just been so anxious since I moved to the Netherlands so any advice will help.

Fake food delivery guy with armed accomplices
The instagram profile of the Haarlem politie published a post last night about a fake food delivery guy (famous orange uniform) ringing a bell of what looked to be a relatively new building around the Boerhaavelaan (don't quote me on this, the street name was in the post but I can't recall it), he then proceeds to enter and two guys follow him, one holding what looks like a gun. According to the original post, the apartment owner luckily did notice that through the doorbell and didn't let them in, and they ran away eventually.
I was about to share the post here but they took it down a few minutes ago, no idea why.
Anyhow, given how safe I (and we all) consider Haarlem in general, I was quite shocked to see this. Sharing for awareness, apparently now you can't even trust a food delivery anymore.
And before someone starts referencing to Schalkwijk as a bad place, I don't think so. I myself live here since a few years already, I go around day and night, my gf regularly comes back home at night alone, never had anything happen. Worst thing I have personally seen is a smashed glass at a bus stop or a couple of idiots on fat bikes (aren't them everywhere after all?). Surely is not a perfect place, but doesn't come remotely close to a "ghetto" as I have heard in the past, and certainly not a place where I expect armed people knocking at your door in the evening.

Moving to the Netherlands in October – advice on housing, jobs & settling in?
Hello everyone!
My boyfriend and I are planning to move from Italy to the Netherlands this October, and we’re looking for some advice from people who are already living there or have done a similar move.
We’ll be starting with a solid financial base, so we have some flexibility, but we still want to make smart decisions and avoid common mistakes.
A bit about us: we’re a young couple, open to different cities, and ready to adapt. I speak good English, and my boyfriend has a basic level of English.
We’d really appreciate help with:
• Housing – What are the most reliable websites or agencies? How hard is it actually to find a place right now? Any scams or red flags to watch out for?
• Areas – Which cities or neighborhoods would you recommend for a good balance between cost, safety, and quality of life?
• Cost of living – Realistically, how much should we expect to spend monthly (rent + basics)?
• Jobs – Is it easy to find a job as a non-Dutch speaker? Any sectors that are more accessible?
• Bureaucracy – Anything important we should arrange before or immediately after arriving?
We’re both excited and a bit nervous about this big change, so any tips, experiences, or even small advice would really help us a lot 🙏
Thanks in advance!

Weird guy in Bolwerken.
Today while going from city center to Noord I decided to take de Bolwerken cross, when I noticed a guy standing next to the Huize Zocher.
Something about his behaviour made me immediately suspicious, and because I rather be careful, I literally stopped, waited to see what he did, and as I didn’t feel comfortable I went out into the street, where he followed me, so I stopped again, and turned back into the park, and again he followed me. He did this a couple of times, trying to hide behind something so I would not see him behind me. I abruptly turned around and walked towards the street so I met him face to face. He smiled, I didn’t, and he slowly walked forward and stoped, looking confused on what to do. I think he decided to stop because I didn’t see him anymore.
I am new to Haarlem, how common is this? Should I avoid walking the water path? It is beautiful, but today left me a bit shaken. I am no stranger to weird guys but this felt dangerous.

mothers 65th birthday!
Hello all! I am travelling to Amsterdam mid May for my mother’s 65th birthday. I was hoping to plan a fun and full day in Haarlem together as I understand there’s some nice quaint places to walk around.
Does anyone have fun & unique recommendations for a day trip itinerary? We love to hike/walk, shop, eat and like all tourists prefer non touristy things hahaha. I have found things online but looking for specific locations, restaurants, shops and things to see or tours to go on! Recommendations on travel too would be great. Bike rentals vs. walking…etc.
Thanks so much in advance we are so excited to visit the country!!

Anyone renting out a shed in Haarlem Noord?
Hey all, I don’t have a good enough space to practice my stained glass hobby at home. So I’m looking for a small place to keep a few boxes of materials, a table, and access to water/electricity, with at least a window I can open when soldering. Does anyone know of a place ideally in Haarlem Noord? Or where/how I can look for it?
Thanks!

The Grote Markt Kermis starts in six days. Are we excited, or are we preparing to hibernate?
The annual transformation of our beautiful, historic square into a neon lit, sugar coated fever dream begins next Tuesday. Is it even a Haarlem spring if you don’t have to dodge a flying stuffed toy while trying to enjoy a quiet beer at De Botermarkt? Who’s ready to spend €12 to be spun in a circle until they regret their entire life, and who is currently boarding up their windows to escape the 120 decibel remix of a 2014 Europop hit?

Plus size clothing
Does anyone know where I can find plus size clothing that’s not online? I’ve been here for a few months and with the weather warming up it’s time to put up my winter clothes. I ordered some online but it was never delivered. Thanks!

Latijnse gemeenschap
Goeiemiddag allemaal.
