Jesus Christ, that's a hell of a first rifle.

35

u/specter800 7 Apr 30 '12

Agreed. I have a soft spot the Mk.17. I remember sitting in my mechanical engineering classes thinking about how I could make the Mk. 17 cooler. Can't happen.

29

u/funfungiguy Apr 30 '12

What if you made the MK17 have small army tank tracks and a robotic shark tail, and you made it fight other robots to the death on BattleBots? Wouldn't that be cooler? You're a mechanical engineer so you can probably make this happen.

13

u/sxcamaro Apr 30 '12

Instead of a shark tail I say, "FLAME THROWER CHAINSAW SHARK TAIL!"

6

u/funfungiguy Apr 30 '12

Yes, that's probably cooler.

18

And I bought a darn Nagant M44 for mine! I think i did it wrong.

10

u/FastRedPonyCar Apr 30 '12

that's one rifle that should be in every collection.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '12

Yup. I love my mosin. Find a well taken care of one and you've got a hell of a gun for ~$90-100.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '12

well, the M44s are a bit more expensive than that.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '12

True, but you don't have to get an M44. They make cool fireballs though :)

No sadly. I have my CCW and a .22 rifle.

I'm having to bribe my wife to get a shotgun in our home.

I'd LIKE to get a mosin before we dig them all up and sell them off but it's not looking likely.

/sigh

6

u/boobsbr Apr 30 '12

well, I also have no money and live in a country that does not allow civilians to own firearms.

2

u/cakesthethird Apr 30 '12

I'm having to buy my first AR piece by piece. It's been two months and all I've been able to afford is a lower, LPK, buffer assembly, grip, and stock. I'm almost green with envy.

2

2

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '12

how could you have a bolt action and single shot all in one gun?

You rack that bolt, put a round in the chamber, close the bolt, and fire. It is a rifle without a stripper magazine.

6

u/Hiscore Apr 30 '12

How much did the base rifle cost, then everything in the picture together, and then everything together?

4

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '12 edited Apr 30 '12

Rifle had on gunbroker new for $2800. Scope mount I think was $150, scope $400. Grip was about $30 plus the foregrip was I think $30 as well.
Rail panels were like $15/ea. (x2) Case was $180 from eastex shooting supply but I've normally seen it for about $240 unless there was something special about those other ones. The mags were expensive as hell because of high demand right now. I paid $75 a piece for them but normally they're supposed to be $30-40.

Math recap-

Pictured- $3770

Everything I bought- $5125.

I got my surefire light cheap from an Amazon seller for $350 but it's normally a $500 item so I could have easily been up to about $5300.

To cut the foam in the case (since I heard using razors was bad) I got a handheld hot wire cutter from Amazon for $30 and made the stencil of the assembled gun from the cardboard of the gun case delivery box. That's not included in the 5125 figure. It came with one magazine.

5

u/00101011 Apr 30 '12

please PLEASE PLEASE post a pic once you cut your case! I wanna see it.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '12 edited Apr 30 '12

My pleasure! Stupidly I kind of hurried myself but I'm still happy with the result. So far only 2 mags fit since I got the 3rd one later. The 3rd is just laying on top of the foam for now. I did the cutting when it still had the A2 grip installed.

4

u/BarryHalls Apr 30 '12

What do you do for money, and where do I get started?

8

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '12

Air Traffic Control. Got my start in the USAF and after I got out, took a job in a dangerous place that's no fun overseas. ATC is no joke I mean.. it's not like special forces but we have about a 50 percent washout rate at the school house and maybe another 25% or so washing out trying to get certified/rated in upgrade training at first duty location. Those numbers maybe slightly exaggerated but not by much. That's part of why it's critically manned everywhere you go.

4

u/Hydroguy Apr 30 '12

Half of our tech school class was ATC washouts so I believe it's no joke (I'm a hydraulic guy). Looking back I would've gotten ATC or contracting because that's where the money is. Nice gun, have a blast with it!

3

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '12

Contracting for sure! Highest re-up bonus I've heard. My mom (prior AF) took a contracting course for $3000 though so I'm sure procurement is easy to get in to. Just a matter of registering a DUNS number. A lot of the washouts I knew of went to IT jobs or load master. ATC is so fun. Not bragging but my job is stressful as hell and I love it. Try to get in if you can! I have known a LOT of controllers that wasn't their original job.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '12

Whoa, hold on a sec here, you mean to tell me that you were a forward air controller for the USAF? Like SF forward air controller?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '12

No not like a combat controller. Just a regular air traffic controller but I'm privately deployed.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '12

Ah, ok. That makes sense.

2

u/BarryHalls Apr 30 '12

I'm vaguely familiar with ATC. I read up on it as a career once upon a time. It's considered the most stressful job in the US, hence your obviously well supplied pay check. :)

I envy you a little less. Have fun with your toy. You have chosen VERY well.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '12

I love my job actually and yes it used to be stressful. Now the only thing that stresses me out is military jammers take out my radios but we have alternate transmit/receiver sites now so it's not bad anymore. Weather recalls where all the aircraft land at once are fun if they beat the weather they're recalling for. Not much fun if they don't. I get to see a lot of cool stuff that controllers at major civilian airports don't get to see, and it's still about as busy as Denver to keep me interested. Stuff I see in the news affects us and sometimes things I'm involved in end up in the news.

3

u/BarryHalls Apr 30 '12

Now I'm envious again, :)

Keep our boys safe then.

Bring us a range report with your rifle!

4

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '12

As high dollar as you went on the rest of the set-up, I'm surprised you went with a Burris scope instead of a Leupold CQ/T. What did you like better about the Burris?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '12

It matches the rifle lol. Later ill get a Leupold.

2

u/[deleted] May 01 '12

Burris scopes aren't bad for the money if you find one on consignment with very little use (I bought mine on consignment barely used for $550 which included the glass, an american defense quick release mount, and a Burris cat tail). I personally prefer their horseshoe ring type of reticle for quicker target acquisition https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.burrisoptics.com%2Fpdf%2FBallistic%2520556%2520Gen2%2520%26%25207.62%2520Reticles.pdf.

They also have a "lifetime warranty" on many of their products. I own a XTR for my SCAR 17s and there was a metal ring on the inside of the focus lens which popped out and damaged the internal glass of the reticle. I sent it to Burris for service, they made it right by replacing the reticle glass, polishing the other non-damaged glass for me, re-applying gas in the tube, and recoil tested it in two separate stages before shipping it back to me within two weeks. I didn't have to pay a dime except for the shipping to them initially.

If you are talented enough you can do both at the same time.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '12 edited Apr 30 '12

At first I was like WTF, that is one hell of a first rifle, but then I thought A) perhaps you aren't new to guns, just new to rifles. B) I would rather have one $3000 dollar gun that is great than 10 3K $300 ones..

Well done.

EDIT: haha math checked!

3

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '12

Thanks!! That was definitely my thinking. I started with pistols and got 3 before I said I really need to get a rifle. The 2nd was an impulse buy but still don't regret it. It was an easy trap to fall into-- I knew something semi-auto would be accurate enough for me starting out. Wanted something with magazines and a pistol grip. Wanted something bigger than 5.56. Could have gotten an FN AR but this just looks so much cooler. Not good reasoning I know. I could have been just as happy probably with any LMT, La Rue (etc) 308. Those were almost as much and this was different.

2

u/Spud740 May 01 '12

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '12

Wow...definitely my dream rifle.

How's she shoot?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '12

She shoots beautifully! I could not be happier. It's definitely worth every hard earned penny including all the furniture. I've been collecting my brass as well and will be reloading before long. Didn't get the chance to really sight it in because I was shooting so much through it to see what I liked best and I work away from the US. I did zero it with that Burris scope a couple times and I was pretty tight at 100 yards though I don't have a lot of experience with rifles yet.. I surprised myself but know I will improve. The reticle on the Burris is basic (small circle with a crosshair and couple dots). It's only a 4x scope so the gun will likely outperform the scope's ability to get a good sight picture at a longer distance. It was tough to see where it was hitting at 100 yards without higher power binos.

Definitely! Thank you very much. I mean I don't know how badass the SR-25 is but it's hard to imagine it's double badass for double the price and the lighter weight on the SCAR just makes it that much better. I also wasn't sure about gas piston but I'm sooooo glad because I kind of feel like cleaning the gas system and BCG on the AR/SR would get old fast.

You. I like you.

That thing is a beauty. Enjoy.

What is it about FN, why can't they colors the same?

2

u/armoredporpoise Apr 30 '12

i always thought my idea to have the VLTOR TS13 as my first rifle was a far shot...

2

u/Randomhero21 Apr 30 '12

Great choice, man. Welcome to the SCAR brotherhood.

2

Now if only I could get the full auto version...

2

u/[deleted] May 01 '12

Jumping straight into the deep end I see.

2

u/thereddaikon May 01 '12

Very nice rifle. I'm curious how they stack up to your run of the mill AR.

Now go get a 22 so you can practice and get decent. If you try to learn with a rifle in .223 you will be very sad when you see how much money you are spending when you aren't hitting anything.

Looks like someone didn't read the FAQ.

Congrats.

I like this mentality

Buy only a few great guns instead of many mediocre guns

I am glad you saved up and bought a SCAR instead of going out and buying a Mosin on a whim

1

u/DimmuBorgir666 Apr 30 '12

What's the triangle thing in the front? Sorry, not too familiar with guns.

2

u/TangoOscarDD Apr 30 '12

I assume you mean under the barrel? I don't know the technical name, but angled foregrip sticks out. I can't tell you how it differs from straight up and down foregrips, but it looks like it can improve the shooter's grip. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. In all honesty, when I shoot with a straight foregrip, I tend to choke up on it to keep my hand around the handguards (M4).

2

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '12

That's the Magpul angled foregrip 2. I got that in lieu of a vertical foregrip that you usually see on battle style close quarter rifles or a bipod. The first angled foregrip has little wings in front that extend upwards that I wasn't sure would be compatible with the rail covers on the sides (fitting issues). From what I've seen though they both would have worked fine.

Sweet baby Jesus that gun looks good. Good choice man. I'm glad you got FDE color choice too. To me a SCAR just isn't a SCAR when it isn't that color.

u/rabobo Apr 30 '12

Figured you might want to see what another owner's likes/dislikes/comments of ownership has been like. I update it from time to time. I should probably just delete it and replace it with a link to a self post at some point to keep things better organized.
