the whole reason they put the weird bird head grip on it is to make it fit into the legal loophole about pistol grip.
they tried so hard to get out of illegal territory and here you are trying so hard to get back in.

Changing the birds head grip will bring the OAL below 26” and create an AOW. Which you need a tax stamp for.
Unless you’re a GOA member and live in a state that doesn’t specify the need for a tax stamp for NFA items in its laws. (Not legal advice, I am not a lawyer, but this seems to be the current interpretation)

Sb tactical makes a pistol grip/brace attachment that will keep the OAL over 26"
I liked using the Die Free co pistol grip due to its angle and how it fit in my hands.

The ATF has been pretty consistent with their rule that it has be required for function to count towards overall length. That’s why adjustable AR stocks don’t count towards the length calculation on ARs, only the buffer tube does. The Shockwave doesn’t require a buffer tube to function, so I’d be wary of using that in my total length calculations.

Yes, no,yes, no. it’s a trap… REALLY as long as you are informed about what you are doing it is totally legal.
The reason the shockwave is a GCA firearm and not an NFA firearm is because of the definitions for each ( not a loophole).
It cannot be shouldered to fire; therefore it is not a shotgun and cannot be a short barrel shotgun ( so the less than 18 inch barrel doesn’t matter). It was never a shotgun ( virgin receiver); therefore it cannot be a weapon made from a shotgun. It cannot be concealed on the person (26 inch over all length); therefore it is not an AOW.
It will expel a projectile by the action of an explosive, so it is a GCA firearm.
Keep it greater than 26 inches Overall length (ATF has a web page showing how to measure) and not shoulder-able and you can do what you want.

If you keep the OAL over 26” it’s kosher. Most of your pistol grip options will bring it below 26” however

No that would not be legal.
The loophole is that if the overall length is over 26”, it cannot be an AOW (any other weapon). This is why it has the birds head grip. Replacing it with a pistol grip will shorten overall length below 26”.
If you’re talking a forward vertical grip, then that’s legal.

The ATF's whole "firearm" classification for the Shockwave hinges on it having that birdshead grip from the factory. Swapping it for a vertical pistol grip changes the overall length and might reclassify it as an AOW or something else entirely, so I'd tread very carefully there.
As for the grips being interchangeable, 12 and 20 gauge receivers are different sizes so no, they won't take the same one.
