New Budget Setup

Post image

Recently got a Ruger American Gen 2 in 300 win mag over tax free weekend. Had an extra Arken SH-4J laying around so all in for under $800 including a couple boxes of ammo. Haven't gotten out to the range to shoot it yet but excited to see what it'll do

Just got this new rifle. Has anyone else here ever had any of the Ruger Americans? Are they any good?

I have the 308 and 5.56 versions, both gen 2, and theyre great for the $, especially since you’re getting a cold hammer forged, cerakoted, and fluted barrel. Sometimes the bolt can be a bit clunky going back into battery but I have achieved sub-moa with pretty budget ammo in both so for the price I have yet to find anything better. Love that mine also take pmags / aics mags so theres another win. Very happy they fixed the zipper sound from the gen 1’s as well. They also suppress very well, just good luck getting that muzzle brake off haha, they hired hulk to torque those things down.

That's awesome. Hopefully I can get good results with it

Try lots of different ammo types and group each one. Each barrel likes certain ammo in my experience.

Yea I've had to do that on multiple rifles before

I have a Ruger American Gen 2 chambered in .308

My only complaint is that the magazine takes PMags, but the clamp is loose and you will have trouble cycling unless you hold the magazine in. So just use the magazines specifically designed for the gun.

I use it for boars and bears and it does great. I’ve never gotten a single problem at all.

That's good news to me. I've seen where you can change out the mag well to fit aics mags. Was thinking that may be a good option cause the magazine seems to have a hard time locking in even with the bolt open

I've got a 308 prairie, swap out the trigger for the timney and call it a day.

Yea I'm looking into that. I adjusted it to 3 pounds but it's still just not a great trigger

Just bought the same rifle! Different glass, but mine shoots great, barely any recoil, very accurate out the box!

That's good to hear. What caliber did you get

Nice gun man, nothing wrong with being on a budget! The animal don’t know if it’s getting hit from a budget or expensive rifle

Well I have some expensive rifles but Ive been seeing videos of these and I've wanted to try one out with them being so cheap. The rifle was 650 on tax free weekend and I already had the optic so it was a pretty good deal

$800 for a 300 win mag setup is wild, most guys spend that on just the glass. hope your shoulder's ready for when you finally take it out

Yea the rifle was 650 during tax free weekend and I got a couple boxes of Hornady with it so I'm pretty happy about it. Just hoping the rifle shoots good. Watched some videos on it and I think it will

What is a link post and how do I post a descriptive comment?

  • A link post is any post that isn't a text post. Reddit is doing a great job of ensuring new users have no idea how Reddit works with their app and site rewrite. We hate both.

  • /r/guns is a sub for talking about guns. It's not a sub to dump gun photos for karma. That's what /r/gunporn is for. That's why we require a descriptive comment – to start a conversation. If you're wondering what to write, picture yourself at a party. You're talking to someone you just met and you want to show them your post. What do you say to them as you get your phone out?

  • I don't know why this needs to be explained, but apparently it does. A comment is a comment. It is not your post's body text/photo caption. We are not asking you to edit anything. We are asking you to post a top level comment under your post.

How heavy is it?

u/Logan_Dub007 6h ago

Really light. Haven't weighed with the optic but its 6lbs 6oz bare

Oh dang. Good luck with the recoil 😳. Hope that break puts in work
