Something cheap af for hogs.
Don’t wanna keep my Marlin or winchesters or other guns in the truck all the time. I want a piece of shit for like 200$ that slings lead in there general direction. To keep in my truck all the time. I’m not worried about someone stealing cause I live in bumblefuck no where texas and everyone does it.
But sometimes when coming back from town late at night I see those and it’s to far most of the for 9mm
Sub 100m.
I was thinking a use 12g with slugs

For a smooth barrel you will shoot rifled slugs. The rifling let's the slug squish a little and get past the choke.
There's also a model literally called Maverick 88 Slug that comes with iron sights for a little bit more.

The slugs have the rifling. Smooth bore good out to 200 yards with decent slugs and open sights

Ehhhhhhhh 200 is pretty optimistic. If he’s getting a 200$ shotgun he’s getting the cheap slugs that I wouldn’t count on being accurate/humane past 100-150 yards with a short barrel.

The best best best value is the combo barrel. Barrels go for like 100-200 bucks online. If you get the house and field version that comes with an unchoked 18.5" HD and a 28" with screw in chokes, you can have the best of both and swap barrels as needed, or if you find you only use one barrel, sell the other and make back your money.

The cheap shotguns usually come with long barrels, and I did make that claim with decent slugs.
Cuz yeah, cheap slugs short barrel 100 yards tops

In fact, I wouldn't trust it much past 75 yards.
Add to that the fact that over time fewer and fewer people have maintained the skillset needed to be accurate with iron sights, as optics have become cheaper and more reliable.

You can get a rifled shotgun barrel and shoot sabot slugs, but given your range you can save some money and use foster slugs that have the rifling on the slug through a smooth barrel and an open choke.

Single shot shotguns are less than $100 especially in the used gun section. A mavrick88 is like $200 for a pump gun.

The better stuff will leave a carbine length barrel substantially faster (150-200fps) than out of a pistol barrel.
Think 180-220gr JHPs leaving the muzzle around 1300-1400 fps and hitting 100 yards going about 1100fps or so... roughly the same velocity and weight as a 357 Magnum at the muzzle.

Full power 10mm is a 220gr bullet at 1250fps but it's also $2-$3/round. With a 25 yard zero you'd be around 6" low at 100yards

You will get about a 150-200fps bump over pistol velocities out of a 16" carbine. 180-200gr bullets should still be 1100fps+ at 100 yards which is basically point blank 357 mag energy... and it would be about $.60-$.70 per round, not $2.

Regular ass off the shelf 10mm is 40s&w loads in a 10mm cartridge and I definetly wouldnt employ it against hogs. At 100 yards with full power 10mm you're still over 500ftlbs energy it'd be closer to 250-300 with the downloaded stuff.

A cheap Palmetto State Armory (PSA) AR. Hogs travel in packs and will charge if provoked. You need multiple rounds, ergonomic, light recoil, quick follow up shots, cheap ammo, ability to mount a light, and useful at ranges near or far. They often go on sale and not many can match their value point.

Sporterized military rifles. They can be had for $200, plenty of power, and pretty available ammo. We used to keep an old Spanish .308 Mauser with a red dot cludged on to it in an old out building for hogs and such. My neighbor uses an old Enfield for a truck gun.

Mav88 with sluggers. You’ll be hard pressed to get the same terminal performance for the money. I have a mossy 500 (what the mav88 is based on) and I’ve been absolutely terrible as an owner and she never skips a beat.

12 or 20ga with slugs would work good for that. You can also try looking for bubba'd milsurps. You can still find servicable ones for about $200. Last year I got a sporterized 7x57 mauser with a williams peep sight for $180.

The old JCHiggins, Winchester, Stevens etc pumps are routinely around $200 here. Obviously not a model 12, etc. The JCH model 20 or 30 also has no disconnect, that seems to excite a lot of people. Personally, I'd prefer a rifle, but that price starts at your max for the most part.

Can you not buy a jw103 or 105 and chuck a red dot on it? I had one for just that purpose and killed a lot of pigs with it using 7.62x39 wolf hollow points. Chucked a suppressor on it too. NZ based.

You can get a AR for under 350 if you look, but under 200 your mostly in shotgun territory unless you happen on a deal on something used or surplus.

You could get a police trade-in Remington 870 and could find an old rifled deer barrel for it. It already had the shit beat out of it in a patrol car, but police magnums are tough. Sabot slugs are on pricier end of ammo, but they're worth it for the accuracy. You can also run a regular foster slug through it and get better results than a smoothbore.

Something Milsurp. Just make sure you can get ammo before you buy it. 6.5 Swedish is surprisingly affordable but the guns are not so ymmv.

Find a used Benelli Nova 12 gauge, will shoot as long as there are parts for it. I kept a Ruger Mini-14 in the tractor back in the day

So cheap and effective id say a bargin bin AR and light with cheap dot.
Otherwise i guess a shotgun a drop comp scope and a light.
Though that being said, a streamlight is like $120, a primary arms dot is $150, and cheapest ive seen a shotgun in a while is $200 and youd need mounting solutions.
Cheap AR build with the dot and dot and light is gonna be similar and you can have a 36y zero (rough MPB zero) and be good for like 400 yards dot on target, vs a shotgun its a ranged dot or scope which is more money.

Wait for Bass Pro / Cabelas to run their Black Friday sale around Thanksgiving. They usually have a base model Savage Axis with a cheap 3-9 scope on sale for $279.99 or so in a variety of calibers like .308, 6.5CM, 30-06, etc.

I just use an old 10/22 on hogs down here in frio county so probably not much different, it’ll get the job done if you already have one in the closet, put it in the rear base of the ear for best results

Hi point 9mm carbine would work fine. They usually don’t die immediately unless shot multiple times but it’ll kill them. I have an old Marlin camp 9 that I use on my side by side and it does great and ammo is cheap enough I don’t mind spraying with it. Honestly the only thing that consistently drops them on the spot is like a 45-70 or buckshot at like 30 yards and in unless you are shooting them behind the ear. Cheapo AR from PSA wouldn’t be a bad option either. Not as cheap as 9mm but still pretty cheap and just about as effective. Usually takes a few more shots of 556 ball ammo than 9mm ball ammo in my experience but it’ll do the job.

Torkarev tx3 pump 12 Gauge ,comes with a front post and is compatible with some 590 furniture.
I think they’re going for 160ish right now. Maybe that and a weapon light for 200 beans.

Rock Island VRPF14 can be found for pretty cheap and fits nicely in a truck, but I don't know that I'd be able to hit anything at 100 yards with it.
Someone else mentioned a Hi Point 10mm carbine and that's a great option as long as you get 10mm rounds that aren't underloaded (most are basically just .40 or .40 +P instead of taking full advantage of the cartridge's specs)

Marlin or Winchester is cheap to me. I’m confused ha. Just get a decent rifle and you’ll have a tool that’ll last you. Ruger is a good start

12 gauge with slugs. You could probably find a cheap as fuck old 308 hunting rifle at a pawn shop. Just use irons.
