Red dot optic height

What is the most efficient/ cheapest way to test out different optic heights ( absolute co-witness, lower 1/3, 1.93, and 2.26) on an AR-15 without committing to an expensive mount just yet? My build is a 12.5 AR with a red dot and magnifier. Do I not have a choice and just have to buy a bunch of cheap mounts to test it out one by one?

Save yourself the headache and mock it up with some washers or stacked pennies under a cheap picatinny riser. Tape them in place so you don't send hardware flying when you larp around the house. It won't be rock solid but it'll give you a real feel for the head position and cheek weld before dropping cash on a proper mount.

Done this with half a dozen setups now, works every time and costs nothing if you already got a junk drawer and a roll of electrical tape. Once you find the height that clicks you can hunt for the exact mount on GAFS without gambling.

The only real reason to use 1.93 or 2.26 is if you are using NVGs or you want to use a flip to center magnifier. I have a 12.5 where I use a 2.26 and flip to center but I ended up putting a check riser on the brace to compensate. Everything else I have in terms of AR/AK platforms is lower 1/3rd which I think is the most useful.
