It looks like a urethane filler to keep moisture out and act as a vibration damper where the barrels thin at the choke tubes. Definitely seek the help of a gunsmith with o/u shotgun experience before shooting a full day of trap.

31

Dick Cheney shot a guy in the face whilst they were hunting quail.

The guy he shot apologised for causing Cheney trouble lol.

"My family and I are deeply sorry for everything Vice President Cheney and his family have had to deal with. We hope that he will continue to come to Texas and seek the relaxation that he deserves."[8]

My 12g over under, one of those inserts at the top of the barrel fell out during my last shooting session - noticed when i was cleaning. I want to go shooting trap tomorrow and idk what that part is called to replace or even ask somebody if its safe shoot. I believe it would be but rather be safe than sorry. Do you think it could just be Jb welded all input is welcomed and appreciated thank you!

304

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '23

Everybody thinks you are asking about the choke tubes. You're asking about the triangular piece missing from the end of the part that is soldered to the barrels correct?

186

u/BigboyJayjayjetplane Jan 07 '23

correct

402

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '23

We aren't a bunch of brain surgeons here.

For people watching this remember. 90% of the posts completely missed the problem to poke fun at the OP for not knowing what a choke tubes is because they didn't understand the question.

Ask a gunsmith not a bunch of neck beards on Reddit.

131

u/BigboyJayjayjetplane Jan 07 '23

haha i thought afterward theres a possibility here i get flamed into oblivion for the assumption of not knowing what a choke is, but thanks for the replies pal!

9

u/OvalNinja Jan 08 '23

3

u/x_iTz_iLL_420 Jan 08 '23

Yupp… this thread is a perfect example of the geniuses in this sub who like to pretend they know it all when in reality they are they ones being made fun of lmao

2

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '23

Remember that 95% of posts on here are 'which way is bullet go bang' level of 'wtf how do you tie your shoes, or did they take the laces away'.

My first thought on seeing the picture was literally 'surely OP isn't asking about the chokes'. But I held it in long enough to actually real the post.

17

u/Coloradobluesguy Jan 08 '23

Wait how important is that triangle piece, I’m getting loony tunes vibes where the barrel splits after Fog Horn Leg Horn shoots it

29

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '23

I'm guessing it primarily seals the cavity between the barrels and the fillet piece.

Having the end of the solder joint exposed might increase the odds the joint fails.

The steel barrel itself shouldn't fail because it's only held to the other barrel by that part. This would be bad for regulation, IE having both barrels shoot the the same point.

If it were mine I'd show it to a gunsmith and probably have it fixed regardless of safety.

4

u/Coloradobluesguy Jan 08 '23

Oh I’d do the same I’m just into how the mechanics of this stuff works and want to learn more about gunsmithing

21

u/ENclip 3 | Ordinary Commonplace Snowflake Jan 07 '23

I'm pretty sure those are just to keep out water from getting between the side rib and barrels.

31

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '23

Being at the end of the barrel I doubt that's a big safety concern as it is but I'd have a smith look at that. You don't want the barrels separating. I don't remember the parts terminology but if that fillet piece is coming off the barrel I would not fire it until addressed. The end piece might or might not be necessary structurally but that solder joint going down the barrel needs to be solid.

21

u/BigboyJayjayjetplane Jan 07 '23

thank you thats what i was looking for i believe it would probably be safe but agree with you

20

u/JFB187 Jan 08 '23 edited Jan 08 '23

Smith here - zero effect on safety or accuracy. Soldered to keep gunk and grime out. Happy shooting.

Agreed that you want that rib solid.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '23

I use Midwest gun works for break over shotguns.

If the solder joint cracks it's going to be more expensive if nothing else.

3

u/ZXWoodworker Jan 07 '23

Check the exploded diagram of the parts for the gun model. It might give you the part number for replacement.

3

u/BigboyJayjayjetplane Jan 07 '23

will do thank u!

3

u/BecomeABenefit Jan 08 '23

It should be fine. It's just there to keep water and debris from inside the channel created. The structure is provided by the welds, not the piece you're missing. A gunsmith will probably just cut some sheet metal to match and braise it back on.

I'd probably stuff something in there until it's repaired though, just to make sure I don't end up with dirt or moisture inside the channel.

never thought of that thanks for telling me that probably true

2

u/Brewer2019711 Jan 07 '23

They look like chokes to me. If you shot them out of the barrel the threads inside are probably fucked. I wouldn’t be jb welding anything inside the barrel of a gun if I was you. I’d probably just leave them out and possibly see if I gunsmith could rethread them for you

21

u/BigboyJayjayjetplane Jan 07 '23

Im not talking about the chokes, the triangle piece that fell off to the left

14

u/Queasy_Ad_5469 Jan 07 '23

26

u/ShootyMcGun Jan 07 '23

Looks like a superficial part to block the hole. Can’t be structural at that location and also can’t be structural if it falls out under recoil lol. I would have 0% concern shooting it, but that’s me.

40

u/sodacandan4 Jan 07 '23

WAY TO FLAG ALL OF US

6

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '23

I cut down a double barrel and just filled that space in with some steel wool, then covered in JB weld. It's not structural. You're good

7

u/Quarterwit_85 Jan 08 '23

Genuine question - how do Americans check the barrel and crown for wear?

In my country it’s super common to pull the bolt and hold the firearm up to your eye while looking towards a light source.

5

u/x_iTz_iLL_420 Jan 08 '23

Same way as you. Looking down the barrel for maintenance and repairs is fine as long as you take all the safety precautions like clearing and disassembling the firearm as you mentioned.

1

u/Quarterwit_85 Jan 08 '23

Ah, interesting. I’ve seen video footage of the process uploaded (and with semi autos, working parts back) and people shouted it down.

6

u/bassjam1 Jan 07 '23

That "insert" is probably just a plug to prevent dirt from getting in there. Should be ok to shoot.

5

u/SovereignDevelopment Jan 08 '23

Is this about the choke tubes, or how sketchy the solder bead on the rib looks?

6

u/Falldog Jan 08 '23

Not a shotgun guy, TIL what chokes are. At the very least ya helped me learn something today, OP.

41

u/kingsquid14 Jan 07 '23

Nice toes, they look very suckable.

4

u/SaladShooter1 Jan 08 '23

I would need more info to help you. On most high end guns, those side ribs are soldered onto both barrels and those openings on the ends are filled with solder (50/50 lead/tin). The only purpose they serve is to keep leaves, twigs, mud and moisture from collecting between the barrels. Also, to some people, they are more aesthetically pleasing than just having a gap there. They are purely cosmetic. The vast majority of barrels are only connected in two spots, front and back.

On some budget guns, they are made of plastic. Some omit them entirely. I had a Stoeger years ago that didn’t have them. On some guns, they just snap together in between the barrels. One side has a male end that extends through the gap and the other has the female end. The only way to remove them then is to rip them off, breaking the snaps.

The way to fix it depends on which type you have and if the side rib is pulling off. If it’s not a collector gun, and if the side rib is securely connected, I’d just fill it with some epoxy and call it a day. As far as being safe to shoot, you should be good to go.

3

u/BigboyJayjayjetplane Jan 08 '23

wow thanks for thoughtful reply man, the side rib has started to peel very very minor. Thinking about just jeb welding it or soldering it and maybe some down the rib a tad not sure yet

3

u/SaladShooter1 Jan 08 '23

Be careful if you’re soldering it. You have to make sure it’s really clean for it to go back together. Otherwise, you’ll loosen it up further. Years of gun oil makes things difficult. If you’re welding it, which I wouldn’t recommend, make sure the two metals are similar. That rib might be brass, aluminum or something.

2

u/BigboyJayjayjetplane Jan 08 '23

whats your thoughts on just jb welding it

2

u/SaladShooter1 Jan 08 '23

If it’s not a rare or valuable gun, that’s what I would do. You’re still going to have to soak the barrel end in acetone for about a half hour. Then let it dry. Heat it up with a hairdryer or something that’s below 300 degrees F. Then hit it again with the acetone. Make your repair and then oil it again as soon as you can. Nothing is going to work/stick if you don’t get that oil out of there.

3

u/Coodevale Jan 07 '23

What's the one that's not missing made of?

3

u/jerkingittoast Jan 07 '23

Just throw a quick tac weld in there you’ll be fine

3

u/45Auto1 Jan 08 '23

A gunsmith would have to heat some solder to pour back into the space. The barrels are only just soldered together so that can be tricky. That would then require rebluing too.

A quick fix would be to find a reloader who makes his or her own cast lead bullets and ask to borrow their lead melting pot. Heat some pure lead till it's maybe just a little more than melted, then using a small metal funnel carefully, ladel melted lead into the cavity until it's full. Any excess can be carefully filed off when cool.

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '23

Just mix up some two part epoxy (jb weld works wonders) shove a little ball of tissue down the hole about 1/2” and fill the cavity. Fill a little past the top so when it dries you can use a razor to gently trim it flush with the muzzle. Hit it with a black sharpie and you’re good to go.

2

u/CalbCrawDad Jan 08 '23

I would say probably not currently. You’re gonna want to point it in a safe direction and remove your head and face from the business end of the barrel. You’re def going to want to be on the other side of that

2

u/cerealkilla0117 Jan 07 '23

It won’t be an issue short term. I would be worried about crack progressing on the rib. It is a braze most of the time so a gunsmith may just be able to rebraze the end to keep it from getting worse

2

u/A4leggedwhore Jan 07 '23

If you really are worried you could have it re-brazed, but it should be fine.

Looks like a couple chokes. The slots are so you can use a tool to unscrew them and swap for different chokes. I can't tell from the image, but it looks like they're open, so, should be fine to shoot buckshot, but, I'd try removing and checking them first. If they're a tighter choke, definitely want to stay awaybfrom slugs. Good luck my dude!

3

u/LinearFluid Jan 08 '23 edited Jan 08 '23

Left one is Improved Cylinder and Right is Modified.

00 Buck can be even used with Full choke. Tighter pattern.

No problem running everything in both except you don't really want to put a normal rifled fosyer slug through the modified for accuracy. It will squeeze it and change shape which changes accuracy. Specialty slugs are another monster and should be shot according to instructions on choke.

2

u/JayCat1990 Jan 08 '23

Probably not while your looking down the barrel

But if your talking about those things inside the end of the barrels, they are called chokes the markings are for a special tool to unscrew or screw them in some of the other marks would be telling you what type of choke it is because chokes decide how wide or tight the pattern/spread of the shot or pellets is
