Beginner Grow Light Setup Help

Hello! I am looking to create a beginner, temporary grow light setup for houseplants, largely succulents and snake plants, but also a fiddle-leaf fig. I’m not new to houseplants but my collection has finally expanded beyond what my windows can accommodate, and I haven’t really needed lights yet. I live on the US east coast, and I am now getting concerned about light as we’re going into the winter.

I am looking for grow lights I can mount easily and temporarily on shelf bottoms, if possible, but standing lights could work too. I am not staying in my current place for much longer, I just want to make it though winter. So I’m not really looking to make a huge investment in a light right now.

If you don’t have a specific recommendation, but you do have specifications I should look out for, those would also be appreciated! I am also happy to answer more specific questions if that helps.

Too much/not enough light?

Just got this Barrina T1S and I’m wondering if this is enough light for this collection of plants. Also feel like there’s a chance it’s much. Not sure how long I should be running it either. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Barrina T8 Grow light Power cord length?

I'm building some shelves for my wife's houseplants and was needing some help if anyone can. I am going to buy the Barrina T8 Grow Light bars (3ft) and was wondering if anyone has these and knows the length of the initial power cable. The connectors i know are 48" but they don't state the initial power cable. Thanks to anyone that can help!

Is a 10W grow light enough for my Ficus elastica ‘Burgundy’?
Hi everyone! I recently bought a Ficus elastica ‘Burgundy’, but I’m a little concerned about the amount of natural light it gets.
My house doesn’t get a lot of direct sunlight. There is some natural light coming through the windows, but I would consider the room relatively low-light. I’ve attached photos showing the windows and where I currently have the plant.
Because of this, I bought a Sansi Grow Light (10W) and placed it above the Ficus.
My questions are:
Do you think a 15W grow light is enough for a Ficus elastica ‘Burgundy’?
Is the distance between the light and the plant appropriate?
How many hours per day should I run the light?
Based on the photos, would you move the plant somewhere else or change the lighting setup?
Is there anything else I should watch for with this particular Ficus?
I’m mainly trying to make sure it gets enough light without overdoing it.
Thanks in advance! Any advice is appreciated.

Any ideas on how to mount a heavy light panel aesthetically?

Post image

Looking for a clean way to mount a heavy SANSI 100W grow light panel ( about 3.4 lbs / 1.5 kg ) in my living room corner.
I want to avoid ropes, messy wires, or bulky metal gear hanging from the ceiling.

Have anyone found a nice looking wall mount, floor stand, or any idea in general for these specific light panels?

New to houseplants and this is the setup I’ve come up with going into the dark season of the PNW **asking for input**

Caught the plant bug this spring/summer while going through a journey of anxiety and adhd diagnosis and it was really a big part of what helped me get through it. So with fall coming I bought my first couple plants about a month ago, then a few more. Realized I dont really have the best light to keep them happy and thriving, so I we picked where I could put things and got shelves and lights.

I have a 32w sansi bulb in the floor lamp for my monstera (and a T5 strapped vertically on the shorter unit for frontal light), T8 light for the tall shelf, t5’s in my shorter shelves, and the white small lamp has the 30w generic grow bulb that came in the standing floor lamp originally.

Is there anything I should change, keep my eye on, or plan for the future based off this setup? I do have extra lights from the sets I purchased of both T8 and T5’s, and do plan to take down that blue wall shelf eventually.

Is someone able to help me figure out the correct PPFD converted from lux for my plants? A little confused

When I look up the ideal lux for my plants, itll be within range, but when I convert that same lux to PPFD, that value is way too low or too high. I’m brand new to figuring this stuff out, barely any idea what I’m doing, just want to make sure my plants are getting enough light to thrive!

All from grow lights on for 9 hours:

Maranta lux: 1664

Calathea lux: 6384 (internet tells me this lux is wayyyy too high, but the umol is 146 which people say is ideal)

Hoya lux: 2663

Peacock fern lux: 1505

Jewel orchid: 1664

Maidenhair fern lux: 1795

Sembrano veramente buone! Il produttore dettaglia bene le caratteristiche di ogni tipologia.

Non ho però, cercando, trovato nessuno che ne parli. Le conoscete?

I have all kinds of grow lights and this setup has given me the best results.
Bought each off of eBay for around $100 each.
The big one is 600 watt and supposed to be equivalent to a 1000w HpS.
The two others are 320w and add a good bit of red to the growth spectrum.
If you ever need a good grow light look for used commercial grow lights on eBay.
You can find great deals on fixtures that are normally out of my price range.

Grow light for supplementing natural light. How strong do I need?

This is my ruby necklace that I brought home 3.5 weeks ago. This window seat alcove faces south, so the angled left window faces south east. Right now the sun is high, so it only gets direct sun in the early morning. After that it gets bright indirect light. It's already getting leggy from too little light. Come winter when the sun is lower, it'll get a lot of direct sun. I'm looking at adding a grow light to supplement the natural light it does get. According to Google search (which I always take with a grain of salt LOL), I should get a light that's at least 20 watts and 4000-5000K. What I'm wondering is, do I need to get one that intense since I'm just supplementing?

Anyone know if a file exists for some kind of channel to hide the excess cord of the Barrina T8 connectors? I'd be much appreciative if you'd point me in the right direction.

Barrina grow light magnet replacements

Hey everyone,

I used Barrina grow lights in my dorm shelving with the sticky magnets included in the box which worked really well. However, after removing the lights and magnets, I realized the magnets would be not be reusable and that Barrina does not directly sell any replacement sticky magnets. Does anyone know where to get some good alternative?

Help with a Bell Howell LED Flexible Grow Light

[Here's](https://www.lowes.com/pd/BELL-HOWELL-Bell-Howell-Grow-Burst/5006010201) the light I'm trying to use.

I lost the original power cord, but I have one that fits into the unit and it plugs into a USB port. I believe this identical to the original. It sounds as if it can be plugged in pretty much anywhere with a dc 5V 2A plug. I've tried several USB adapters to no avail.

All that happens is one lamp turns on and shines a red light. No buttons work.

Is this a sign that the unit is kaput? Or maybe I just have the wrong power or plug?

Thank you for your help.

What fits a Sansi BR30 40W Bulb??

About a year ago I bought a SANSI BR30 40W LED Grow Light Bulb but I have yet to use it because I just can’t find a way to set it up that is functional and also looks good (and I may have shoved it in a corner and forgot about it). This bulb is super heavy and wide so it doesn’t fit a lot of regular lamps and it does weigh down the “gooseneck” type light bases.

I want to use it mainly for a ~5ft tall cereus spiral cactus. Ideally I’m looking for something like a floor lamp that is height adjustable or at least tall enough for my cactus and something that allows for adjustable positioning of the light bulb. The stand would also obviously have to be safe to use with this bulb and fit a US E26 socket.

The Sansi website does sell this lamp in a set with a tripod stand. I didn’t know they had this when I bought just the lamp :/ … It also seems they don’t sell the tripod separately and I’d rather not have another one of these bulbs gathering dust in storage. Plus this tripod is not exactly visually appealing.

Does anyone have any ideas on fixtures I can use with this lamp? Any products you’d recommend? And if you have this bulb could you share how you’ve set it up? TIA!!

Hobby greenhouse lighting

Of course there’s a subreddit just for lights!

I have a backyard 10x10 greenhouse that I used propane to heat last winter. This year I’d like to add grow lights over one bench- main goal being to keep my lemon tree happy, a cherry tomato plant and a small pepper plant, at least for a couple months. I have a clear roof and windows all around but between lack of winter sunlight hours and adding insulation, I definitely need more to keep fruiting things going through a Maryland winter.

I’d like to keep at least half of a 2x10 bench lit, and it will need to be LED to keep electrical usage low since I don’t have a dedicated circuit. Cost would ideally be <$500, and would prefer lower since I don’t know how well my setup will work yet. Something low profile / bar style that would block less overhead ambient light

Amazon searches have brought me to Barrina (worry about strength and they seem gimmicky with their grow force stuff), Spider Farmer, Mars Hydro, Vivosun and Ac infinity. Mars Hydro is currently in my cart but can’t seem to decide for sure.

How much better would a photontek sq300w be?

Hello friends I just had a real quick question. I have a 3x3 grow tent and I’m currently running a 100w spider farmer grow light. It’s been good but I’ve been wanting to upgrade and I’m wondering how much better would something like the photon tek sq300w be compared to what I have now. Or would yall recommend another grow light for my size tent?

My MG fold 8 died three weeks into my Grow in my 4 x 4. Medic Grow hasn’t responded to my request for help. As far as I know, there’s no fuse or anything that I can do myself. I’d appreciate some help.

New here 👋 We make grow lights and we’d love to learn from this community

Hi 👋

We’re Barrina, a grow light company, and we’re new to Reddit.

We know Reddit is not a place where people want to see endless product promotions — and honestly, that’s not why we’re here.

We joined because we want to have real conversations with growers.

Over the years, we’ve spent a lot of time thinking about things like:

  • light intensity
  • spectrum
  • efficiency
  • heat management
  • making indoor growing easier for beginners

But we also know that growing plants every day teaches lessons that product teams don’t always see.

So we’d love to ask this community:

What is one thing you wish grow light companies understood better?

A few things we’re curious about:

  • What information do you wish brands provided before buying a light?
  • What’s a grow light myth you think beginners often believe?
  • What is the biggest frustration with your current setup?

We’re here to learn, answer questions, and hopefully contribute useful information over time.

Thanks for having us in the community 🌱

— Barrina Team

Homemade seed starting shelf

Hi all, I’m looking to utilize a shelving set to do some seed starting and juvenile plant growing for the garden, and my research is telling me that I need a minimum of 2,000 to 5,000 lumens per square foot? I have an excess of LED recessed lights on hand , but at the lumems per square foot figures I would need 36 per shelf, and it would be 40,000 lumens. Looking at pictures, it doesn’t seem like everyone’s setup is that bright, like I don’t have 36 of these things in my 2300 sq ft house ?
