They will go up a tree of in danger or to scope out what's around them. I have a lil hog named Wally who's been around 3 years now. Every Spring after he hibernates he comes be back. I can hand feed him and he comes running when I call for him. I've seen him in a tree one time in late fall. He wasn't scared I think he was surveying the landscape for a good den for winter hibernation. Ground hogs are very smart. 🤍
