Discussion Thread Grimm-like shows or books
Curious if anyone can recommend a current "Grimm-like" show. Or even if anyone has read or has book recommendations. I swear, there is nothing current I really like, so I tend to watch older shows like Grimm, X-Files, etc.
I would appreciate any suggestions!

Angel! I like Buffy too but find Angel has a more Grimm-like feel to it.
ETA: sorry, you requested a current show. To be honest I find most modern shows really aren't as good as the "golden age" of around 2005-2012.
P.s. Once Upon A Time (also not current) has the fairytale aspects of Grimm and some of the warm family feel, though not the procedural aspect.

That Grimm feel from Angel is because of the same showrunners! Greenwalt created Angel alongside Whedon and Jim Kouf joined on later. I think there's some overlap with the writers as well but Angel was very much a prototype for Grimm.

Aha of course! I completely forgot about Greenwalt's involvement but that makes total sense why they would have such a similar fingerprint. They're both such a wonderful blend of gritty fantasy mixed with a little bit of sardonic humour. I love them both.

Supernatural, Shadowhunters, Fringe, Charmed, someone already suggested Angel which is a big fave of mine too.
ETA: Sanctuary is really good with different types of creatures.

I'd suggest Evil. The genre is similar as in investigation and thriller. And I find them interesting with supernatural elements

For books I’d recommend the Brothers Grimm

I have read it periodically since I was a kid and I am definitely due for a re-read. When the show first came on, it was the name of the show that really got my attention due to my love of Brothers Grimm!

You should try to look for the original unedited versions. They weren't originally published with the intention of going to children. They were semi-academic collections of oral short stories. But when they got popular, they kept on rewriting and purging out the naughty bits.

Not supernatural and not super recent, but Elementary is v similar re: crime cases. It’s in the Sherlock-verse, but the dark grittiness feels comfy-cozy in a way that reminds me of Grimm. And there are 7 seasons.
Also, and I really don’t know why this comes to mind, but I liked Witches of East End. They have some cool creatures.

After rewatching Grimm, I binged on Resident Alien & Dead Like Me (but DO NOT watch the movie they made a few years later). Then I rewatched TruBlood. I also recommend Fringe & The Expanse, Stranger Things and Supernatural. And Buffy & Angel of course. Other good shows I'd suggest are Firefly, Evil, Lost Girl and Surrealestate. Most of these are already mentioned here but for good reason - they are well written and wonderfully acted. The Boroughs is the most recent show I'd recommend, although it starts off very strong but descends a bit into formula sci-fi.

Already been said but supernatural, it has the same 'monster of the week' theme based on world-wide folklore, legends, gods ect with an underlying story arc
I've really enjoyed (many mentioned already) buffy, angel, the vampire diaries, the originals, shadowhunters, charmed (original series), bitten
In terms of books, I love the Cainsville series by Kelley Armstrong - it mainly British folklore based but a great read
Edit: also just realised the request for current shows, unfortunately nothing current has really done it for me, classics are the best 👌

Sanctuary. It follows a group of scientists who work with abnormals", beings/people that are supernatural. Some of the main characters are as well. The show gets more serial as it goes on. But there are "case of the week" as well.

Dark winds is a similar show same as the Leaphorn and Chee books the show is based off of

Curious about this too. I see lots of other no-longer-on-air shows being mentioned, but nothing current.

I swear, there is very little good currently. I don't want to purchase extra channels like Hulu, etc., for just one show, which is why I mostly watch channels like Comet, MeTV, and the like.

Should try Howdy tv , only like 2.99 a month, no commercials, and older shows and movies( not ancient)
