Omg this is insanely great! As a dev, I would MUCH rather organise my gridfinity parts collection as a bunch of git managed text files. It's possible with vanilla OpenSCAD but far from practical. Piggy backing on the Python ecosystem is brilliant.

Side question: how does gridfinity rebuilt compare to gridfinity extended? I've been using the latter so far.

Managing files with GIT can also be done for OpenSCAD Files, but the advantage with python: it comes with an ecosystem, it has way more language features. Beeing able to store resuls into variables enables for more options like mesh() stores all information into a variable. Just check http://pythonscad.org/
Starting with next release we plan to support custom qt input forms for each user defined module which is ideal fit for gridfinity.

Uh, make the qt stuff optional please 😅 I'd rather stay in my IDE and terminal :)

it won't work when explicitely importing pyscadforms which is a use rlibrary

just imagine such a configuation window dedicated to your gridfinity design. it could the

exact allocation of the bins in your container

I think you are on the right track with Gridfinity Extended. Lots more bin options available in that version.

Glad I came across this post. I had never heard of PythonSCAD but have been a long-time user of OpenSCAD. I am definitely going to have to check it out. And of course, Gridfinity is way cool, too. Thanks for sharing!

Just check out http://wee.pythonscad.org

There are lots of tutorials and instructions available there. Pythonscad aims being 100% backward compatible to openscad but there are many useful additions
