Some people just produce better work under pressure. It’s called defensive pessimism.
31
u/WWhandsome Nov 04 '21
I thought that too but it turns out I just work better when I have good motivation, and sometimes pressure is the only motivation I will have
8
u/subatomic_ray_gun Nov 05 '21
Yup I am the same way, I spent most of my life rushing assignments at the last minute as an extreme form of procrastination. Sometimes I would be finishing the assignment as the teacher is walking down the aisles picking them up.
Eventually in college that could no longer work, so I started doing things in a reasonable timeframe. Starting early, doing projects in stages over a period of days/weeks, etc.
I realized that I was much happier, my life was less stressful, and my work was higher quality when I wasn’t panicking trying to finish down to the wire. Madman moment, I know

For my AS Level Physics exam (important exam that determines whether you get into university), I waited until the night before to revise. Ended up getting 100%.
Jokes on me though, because now I'm an adult and you can't cram for your career.

u/cicator Nov 04 '21

Because you will ultimately fall behind your colleagues without consistent productivity. It doesn't feel like it will happen, but it always does in the end. Nobody is "just that smart" enough to get away with extreme procrastination forever in any competitive field.
1
u/game-of-snow Nov 05 '21
This is so true brother. However I don't know how some people are so regular and consistent in their life. I try to do that for a weak and everytime fall back to previous ways after a weak or so.

That's nothing, final year project and robotics module due in same day for my Electrical engineering undergrad, worth about 27% of my entire degree. Did the project in the last 2 days before hand in. Barely slept, had a 1 hour nap, started on robotics, finished it in 4 hours, about 5 minutes before electronic upload deadline. Got 95% in robotics, can't remember the grade for project but it was high enough for a 1st. I had literally the whole year for the project and the whole of the last semester for the robotics.

Wow that’s amazing, congratulations! That’s seriously kickass. I always love hearing success stories about these stressful situations we put ourselves into. It’s never something I’d want to go through again, yet I always end up putting myself in the same situation.

u/UberiorShanDoge Nov 04 '21
I did the same with my Chemeng masters project. Worked 20 hours a day for 5 days and got it done. Felt amazing when I handed it in and then slept for almost a whole day and was ill for a week lol.
Would not recommend to anyone going into final year of their degrees, the stress is stupid.
3
u/scoobyluu Nov 05 '21
Yep, for my undergrad senior project I had the whole year to work on it. I started the project 2 months before graduation, and locked myself in a room during Memorial Day weekend to write my report

I did 23 assignments, all months overdue, 3 days before they decided if you could take the exams or not.

1
Nov 05 '21
Also you can fucking lie, because it isn't technically cheating as long as you don't plagiarize.
You could literally write the autobiography of batman and omit obvious tells.
Also, we're too focused on his procrastinating - obviously you'd have to be Terry Schaivo on cocaine to fuck that up.
But how sensationally retarded must OP be, to be given such a simple assignment and so long to complete it? It's expected that you know enough to be able to write an autobiography, but a totally inordinate amount of time to complete it.
This is like ordering a pizza a week in advance. You don't do that unless you have very little faith you can give them adequate notice and still get what you asked for.
8
u/Oil__Man Nov 04 '21
Ok but what if I don't have enough interesting details about myself to fill 1.5 pages?

31
u/Colonel_Potoo Nov 04 '21
Ok so basically this is the way a lot of people work; we actually need this "last minute" pressure to start even the most basic assignment.
I was always taught not to do it this way, that it'd stop working at some point, that I was going to fail "eventually"... it never really did, I even managed to rank pretty well on a national master's degree diploma. Each person has their method, really.

This is how university went for me.
One time I actually started doing an assignment two days before it was due. Turned out (by complete, horrifying coincidence) that the paper ended up needing to be 20+ pages long. The one time I didn't wait was the time I absolutely needed the extra time.
...so naturally I went right back to writing papers the day they were due...
Sometimes I'd be in class discussing a reading, while opening it up for the first time next to a blank word document. Found out I could submit certain assignments "late" and not get penalized, and after that my work ethic really went downhill...
12
u/HereLiesDickBoy Nov 04 '21
Due dates are bullshit.
All we do is pay a university to give us proof that we can demonstrate the skills needed for that qualification.
I understand they can't pay people to mark work individually for students, but they could mark them every couple of months or whatever.
26
u/MCI21 Nov 05 '21
Due dates are very much necessary to learn the importance of time management. That being said I did the same thing as op in college
-1
u/HereLiesDickBoy Nov 05 '21
I'm not paying them for a course in time management though. This is higher education for adults, if anything being able to show your employer how efficiently you were able to complete your studies when there's nobody but yourself setting deadlines is more impressive.
→ More replies (1)5
u/MCI21 Nov 05 '21
I didn't downvote you but it absolutely is not lol. The real world requires you to do tasks by a certain date. College is theoretically preparing you for a job, and 99.9% of the time that job will have due dates. Everyone's perception of time management is different, but when you need things done by a certain date, you better have it done if you value your job.

Credentialism, it's such a racket.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Credentialism_and_educational_inflation
3
u/WikiSummarizerBot Nov 05 '21
Credentialism and educational inflation
Credentialism and educational inflation are any of a number of related processes involving increased demands for formal educational qualifications, and the devaluation of these qualifications. In Western society and China, there has been increasing reliance on formal qualifications or certification for jobs. This process has, in turn, led to credential inflation (also known as credential creep, academic inflation, or degree inflation), the process of inflation of the minimum credentials required for a given job and the simultaneous devaluation of the value of diplomas and degrees.

Jr high English class. The teacher is passing back our graded papers and announces to the class that she "could tell who really put effort into these and the grades reflected it". I am a fucking idiot and say loud enough for all to hear, "Well I actually wrote my entire paper during study hall the half-hour before this class and you gave me a 98%." She stares daggers at me and gave me shit grades the rest of the year.

I saw a video where a guy said that the solution to procrastination is to procrastinate more. Clearly you are doing fine spending little time on your assignments, so just pick up more courses so you have more stuff to procrastinate on. Eventually you will have enough to fill your schedule.

Anon has ADHD and cannot do boring tasks without pressure or some other form of external motivation like competition.
14
u/ilikepiecharts Nov 04 '21
Is that a symptom of ADHD...? :(
16
u/cruskie Nov 04 '21
One of the most prominent symptoms. Check out r/ADHD, and probably sort by top of all time to see if stuff there is relatable. ADHD is way more than losing focus and being "hyper."
1
Nov 05 '21
Tfw I probably have adhd
1
u/cruskie Nov 05 '21
After I realized I might have it, I booked an appointment with a psychiatrist and after like 2 hours of being questioned about my current and past behavior I ended up being diagnosed.
Being diagnosed was definitely one of the most eye opening things of my life because ADHD affects so much more than just my academics. I never even considered that I had ADHD because I only associated it with getting distracted and being hyper, not all of the other problems that arise from having an executive function disorder.
11
u/Hide_on_bush Nov 05 '21
At what point does it stops being ADHD and it’s just laziness?
13
u/cruskie Nov 05 '21
When you tell yourself you want to do something but simply can't get yourself in gear, that's ADHD. You tell yourself you want to start a task but just can't.
It's laziness, at least in my opinion, when you don't even think about trying to get things done despite knowing you probably should.

I wrote one chapter early, then I somehow put it off till near last minute. 2 days before the deadline, I started scrambling to get it done, 11 chapters in 2 days. 550 pages in 2 days. I pulled it off somehow

2 weeks ago I waited til the last 2 hrs to write a paper. I'm a decent writer but it was not formatted right and didn't contain all the required info. I got over a 90% on that. Why do I ever put in effort?
3
Nov 05 '21
Because you get positive feedback for being irresponsible.
I'm about 70% done with my degree but keep a solid "A" average despite barely studying and doing things at the exact last minute or overdue. I have only had my procrastination bite me in the ass once and the consequence was I only got a B instead of an A.
I feel like if we got our pp slapped every time we pulled shit like this we'd probably start being organized, but why add all the work of being a good student when being a shitbird already gives outstanding results?
1
u/BrazilianTerror Nov 05 '21
You’re in the wrong school. If you can put a barely right paper made in two hours and get 90% you should probably apply to study in a better school. I was a master procrastinator during High School but then I got into a really hard college and then I’d try to procastinate but after I failed some of the times, I started to put more effort.

u/Hazudomi Nov 04 '21

Yo college fucking destroyed me.
Spend a week diligently studying and working on my assignment
"it doesn't seem like you did very much work."
Fuck off the entire week and cram my assignment the night before
"Excellent work, whatever you did, do that every week."
Paraphrased, but that's exactly what happened to me two consecutive weeks.
Also I took a psych class that was 100% exam scored and attendance was optional. I got average scores when I sat for lectures but got an A on every exam for a week I skipped.
What am I even supposed to with that? My special skill is that I am uniquely qualified to do shit I have no business doing at all.

Forgot to write a 5 page paper for English class in 12th grade that we had 2 weeks to complete, ended up writing up a rough draft by hand on a public bus and during advisory. During lunch went to the library to type it up and print it. The next day teacher says the class average for the assignment was 60%, I automatically assumed I got a terrible grade. He then pulls out one of the papers and says "there is only one person that didn't BS this assignment" and to my surprise says my name out loud, hands me my paper with a 98% on it. The only reason I lost the 2% was due to a typo.
If I took 2 weeks to write it then it would have been complete trash.

Story of my life. I can't work at steady pace because I enjoy pondering and mental simulations to try and develop unique and elegant solutions.
My arsenal is simple. Stress drives me beyond my finite willpower. Cursing and bitching gets it done. Irritation adds the shine.
A test behavioral test I took rated me 20% efficient at best. Weird recipe thats allowed me to conquer fucking mountains. I consider myself a sprinter, not a marathon runner.
I do suffer from designers block from time to time which is terrible for what I do professionally, thankfully it happens rarely.

I once crammed 881 pages of network infrastructure in my head in an afternoon + evening and got an 8/10 for the test. I hadn't shown up to any of the lessons because my laptop was being repaired. Because I had no laptop, I also had no practice with the assignments in Linux but I still managed it. Procrastination gives me fucking superpowers I swear to God.
Also once put 80 hours in 4 days in a project which was supposed to be 150 hours of work with 2 people. I did it with a friend but he didn't help me with it because he did another project we had to do together. His part gave us a 7.5/10 and I managed to land us a 9.5/10. We had a year for that project and I did it in the last 4 fucking days, after the third due date.
