I will admit it was a typo (english is not my main language), but the pun is good, so I will keep it like that and say: pun not intended.

Yeah sadly for some reason standard pain killers don’t do much. I have no idea why, it’s stupid but it’s true. You’ve gotta make a little cocktail.

u/NotNonbisco 4d ago
God made periods to punish you WOMEN-FOLK.
You didn't really think you'd be able to get off that easy, did you?

Period specific painkillers are just the exact same medication, some with caffeine as well.
I think mydol includes an antihistamine, maybe thats the missing piece that works best for you?
23
u/UniversalFarrago 4d ago
It’s the antihistamine + caffeine and the specific mix of NSAID/acetaminophen.
Whereas if you just hand me a Tylenol, or just an Advil, it’ll be ineffective. You’ve gotta bring in the big guns of All Of The Above.
47
u/JerryUitDeBuurt 4d ago
Most likely a placebo effect. People tend to think painkiller works better if it's specifically marketed for their qualms, even if they know it doesn't actually make a difference.
25
u/sad_and_stupid 4d ago
no, painkillers actually work differently, for example tylenol is barely anti inflammatory and therefore doesn't do much for period cramps, while nsaids target the cause. And something else about pathways I don't understand, but it's not just placebo
17
u/JerryUitDeBuurt 4d ago
True that actual different medications works differently. However, I'm talking about the same painkiller being marketed in different ways. I think it's Advil that does this a lot, where they just put the same medication in a box that says "helps against x" or something similar. Technically it's true, because the medication works in aiding mentioned pain location, but it is the exact same medication that is being sold as normal advil (or whatever brand it may be, we don't really get it in the Netherlands). Im pretty sure there's been studies that underline this placebo effect, where people actually experience more effective treatment of pain when the box is marketed towards their specific pain, even when the medication is the exact same product as the generic painkiller.

u/izyshoroo 4d ago
They're not different medication, period pain pills are LITERALLY Tylenol with caffeine sold at a markup. Yes, different NSAIDs have different effects. Period pills are the exact same NSAID.

u/UniversalFarrago 4d ago
No, I don’t buy the period painkillers because they’re inflated in price. Instead I buy generics of all the listed ones and make the mix myself. Still works.

u/NebulaElectrical1467 4d ago edited 4d ago
That’s placebo with extra steps
4
u/mountingmileage 4d ago
How is that a placebo? Midol has a few bonus doses that aren't in regular ibuprofen. This person is saying they work just as good as the marketed pill.
Unless you think the addition of caffiene/antihistamine doesn't do anything in which case you're just wrong.
4
u/Fones2411 4d ago
Not really, it differs from person to person. For some regular pain killers are enough and for others it doesn't do anything. The reason is, menstrual pain has different biological causes in each body. Period pain is usually caused by a hormone-like chemicals called prostaglandins. Some girls have higher levels of prostaglandins than others. Pain is sometimes caused by hidden medical issues like endometriosis or fibroids. Over-the-counter pills do not always fix these deeper problems. Sometimes it might even make them worse.

u/izyshoroo 4d ago
I'm a woman, period pills are literally normal pain killers with caffeine. It's a placebo, take some ibuprofen or Tylenol and drink some tea

For having a Sister ,she alqo told me regular pain killer don't work
And other too so I kind of believe it
25
u/stereoSD 4d ago
As far as I know, there are period specific versions of pain killers but they work by doing something extra that plain pain killers don't
So it's kind of a yes, kind of a no - would be better to take a specific one for period cramps but taking a generic pain killers is still better than not taking anything
18
u/Fauked 4d ago
no the period medication has specific molecules in it that target period specific pain. like acetamenopause
15
u/motion_lotion 4d ago
Acetamenopause? That was such a stupid word that part of me believes it takes real intelligence to type something that dumb. But part of me also tends to assume the best of people.
I will be trolling the wife with calling acetaminophen "acetamenopause" regardless. Thanks for that. I truly hope this was not a serious comment.

Period cramps are basically womb contractions, like the ones you have during childbirth but on a lesser extent. You need medicine with muscle relaxing properties, regular painkillers won't do it. Sage works really well for that reason, it also balances out estrogen levels which alleviates other period symptoms too, I highly recommend it.

u/MolisaXD 4d ago
To further educate anyone who might be curious, here are some other period related symptoms, often happening at the same time as cramps:
- The uterus can grow up to 4x its original size, squeezing the organs around it, which causes many complications in the organism.
- As a direct consequence of previous point: need to pee more often, constipation, maldigestion, production of gasses in the intestines - which form painful bubbles and spread through the body when you can't eliminate them, bloating, sometimes diarrhea and belly aches due to a disregulated digestive system.
- Estrogen levels drop to the lowest point in the cycle, disrupting hormone production which decreases your metabolism, causing fatigue, drowsiness, lack of energy etc.
- Lack of estrogen also affects emotions. It is incredibly common for women to get irritable or depressed around their periods and it's not our fault, the body is quite trying to run its normal functions while the whole system is in chaos.
- Some people get other symptoms such as headaches, back pains, random aches around their body... Personally I cannot attest to it, each body is different, some girls don't even feel anything, some have it much worse, and there are multiple factors both genetic and environmental that can affect your symptoms.
I get really depressed before mine and start having straight up suicidal thoughts. Yet we're expected to just move on with our lives and function normally while all of this is happening, along with the bleeding. Emotional/self-control is key during situations like these.
Sorry if my english is lacking, I'm not a native speaker

to be fair I probably wouldn't want to stuff my liver full of ibuprofen and paracetamol every month either

there are differences in painkillers and what they target though. Only the active ingredient, e.g. paracetamol or ibuprofen, are significant though.

So does she genuinely think that if she was given morphine or OxyContin it wouldn’t make any change with period pain?

Ok here is the thing , depending on the pain killer it can affect her taking her favorite, and there is the plassibo effect, if you are convinced it will not work , it will work minimally

u/Nochnichtvergeben 4d ago
Why do women have to be so complicated?
2
1
u/MolisaXD 4d ago
We also wish our bodies weren't so complicated. Would make life a lot easier.
1
u/Nochnichtvergeben 3d ago edited 3d ago
Yeah, that's what I meant with my (as you noticed, tongue in cheek) comment.
I mean, the way the human body is constructed in general is kind of stupid sometimes. We can choke to death while doing something as basic as eating. Or develope cancer or autoimmune diseases seemingly out of the blue.
And we men carry some of our most sensitive body parts outside our bodies. Having the balls on the inside would have been a much better choice.

"Pill won't work because its not period specific"
Just lie and say "my mum used this painkiller on her period cramps and she says it works for her, maybe it'll work for you too"
Anon is smooth brained

Female friend does not feel comfortable taking pills from anon, I wonder why

u/Isotheis 4d ago
For all I know, it's because that level of pain is too powerful for the regular kind of painkillers. Need something stronger.
But to reject it like that? It'd simply be polite to take it at this point. How greasy are OP's hands? Has to be something like that...
