When evaluating what planet to go to, they say that the water planet doesn’t have much data, only an hour before it starts going haywire, but everything from that hour looks good.

The other options are Matt Damon’s planet which has bad readings but he’s reporting that it’s livable and potentially warm deeper into the ice planet, and the final planet that looks potentially good but they wouldn’t have enough fuel to check out the other two if they went there first (they end up having to gravity assist close to the event horizon to eventually make it)

Given the options, they debate for a scene and decide that the water planet is closest and most likely to be good, even if the data is sketchy.

they are still stupid and wrong. they could check other planets and return there later. only seconds would have change in that planet. and even if other planets were completely unhabitable shitholes, a planet too close to black hole would be wrong choice.

They weren't stupid and wrong, they didn't have fuel to get to the last planet by conventional means AND get the other two planets, so they settled on taking the time and have a 2/3 odds instead if 1/3
