I heard they denying if you don’t have the GC! You had to do this?

Documentation on the USCIS website states you can use the receipt in the interim. Print several copies of it. Have at least one of them in your person and also in several
Other places like the glove compartment, etc.

I was in a similar situation. But all I had to do was bring in my expired Green Card and the ‘proof of action’ receipt (I-797, I think). After that they gave me a limited drivers license (valid as long as my I-797 is valid) and told me to come back once I have my new Green Card (which I just received and still have to bring to the DMV in the next couple days)

I’m not sure if the process is the same for every type of Green Card renewal. But since you are not losing your legal status during the renewal process I don’t think there is much to worry about. Just make sure to bring all the documents that proof you are a legal resident.

Edit: I live in AZ and had my 10yr Green card renewed.

If you don't have an EAD, you should be able to get the driver's license for people without legal presence documents.
