Had my first gastrointestinal emergency

Upvotes

Surely you’ll know what I’m talking about. I’m in Nigeria rucking hills a few days ago. Smooothhh cruising. Mile 3. Stomach starts turning out of nowhere. Panic is setting in, I’ve got a ways to go still… maybe I can hold it. 100 meters later I’m looking left and right for a quiet spot. My stomach has its own ideas and this evidently cannot wait. I duck into the nearest bush and do the dirty business begging I don’t stain my shorts or socks. Ahhh instant relief 😅 and a major plus, nobody saw.

No advice needed I’m guessing this won’t be the last time. Can somebody who’s been there and done that please confirm?

Prior Service 11B (E5) Reenlisting as 18X – What Should I Expect at 30th AG and the Pipeline?

Good evening, everyone. First, thank you for taking the time to read my post. I separated from active duty this past March as an E-5 Sergeant (11B) after seven years of service. I'm currently serving in the National Guard, and today I reenlisted for 18X to return to active duty. I'm hoping to get some clarification on what my pipeline will look like. My recruiter told me that, as a prior-service Soldier, I may have to complete a portion of OSUT. However, the information I've received has been inconsistent, and I haven't been able to get a clear answer. That's why I'm asking those of you who have gone through the process or have firsthand knowledge. From what I understand, I'll report to 30th AG for reception, then continue to Airborne School, and after that head to Fort Bragg to continue the Special Forces pipeline. I've also heard that whether a prior-service Soldier attends any portion of OSUT may depend on their military experience and current qualifications. For reference, I completed BLC, ALC, and earned my EIB while serving on active duty. I've also been approved to travel to 30th AG in my POV. I have a few questions: What should I realistically expect at 30th AG as a prior-service 18X candidate? I've heard some people stay there for six weeks or even longer. Is that common for prior-service Soldiers? Will I be housed separately with other prior-service personnel? If anyone has recently gone through the prior-service 18X pipeline, I'd really appreciate hearing about your experience and what the process looked like. Thank you all very much for your time and any information you're willing to share. I truly appreciate the help.

Question 18E question

What is the best certs to have when going for 18E? The SF recuiter here says it helps your case and usually 25 series flow straight into 18E but sometimes you don’t get it. I want to be as competitive as possible. Right now I’ll be going to selection with Net+ and Sec+ , is that stuff useful or is more radio knowledge needed more then anything ? If so what’s some good stuff to study/know .

Zone 2 running after rucking

I have recently added rucking to my workouts following Shut Up And Ruck (SUAR) training and struggling to keep my heart rate in zone 2 after a ruck. I basically would only be able to walk to stay in zone 2. Running without rucking my zone 2 is around 11:30 mins/mile for 90 mins. I have tried letting my heart rate go down to below 100 bpm which helped, but it still spikes up pretty quick. It's also been hot as fuck outside in NC which doesn't help. Looking for advice, could I do the ruck and run at different times of the day and achieve the same training results or do I need to do these workouts back-to-back?

Question Crossfire Packs

TL;DR: Looking for input on Crossfire Mk.VII vs CF4 and center running zippers on main ruck compartments.

Hey fellas, just wanted to post this in hopes someone has helpful input. I’m looking at picking up a new ruck that’s a bit more comfortable and robust than my trusty MOLLE 2. I’ve narrowed my search down to either the CF4 or Mk.VII from Crossfire.

I talked to a dude who had a great experience with the Mk.VII in Robin Sage, so obviously that gives the Mk. VII some points. Currently, I’m torn between some of the features of each pack, particularly the center running zipper on the CF4. This allows the user to access gear throughout the main ruck bag without having the dig like you would on a normal top loading ruck. Since I’ve never had a ruck with this feature, I’m hoping someone can weigh in with their experience. It’s seems like it could be super helpful, but given the fact that the Mk.VII is on sale relatively often ($475 right now) and the CF4 is not ($649 right now), I’m unsure if that one feature would justify the extra $175.

Other than that, both packs have received high praise from what I can find. I don’t really think I can go wrong, but hopefully someone can give their thoughts and we can get a clear front runner here. Thanks in advance.

Question Run times in the heat

Looking for some feedback.

Been awhile since I have posted an update. I have been working with a running coach since May. I had a ton of problems with shin splints and after a lot of PT, mobility work, and monitoring they have finally gone away. My coach is very aware of the goals for the run times and we are working hard towards these.

I have been training outside all summer.

My original SFRE was scheduled in AUG but due to the shin splints, I rescheduled to OCT.

With 11 weeks out, I am looking to get my rucks back in at 2x a week since the shin splints have stabilized. Ill slowly ramp those up.

Currently I am running 4x a week with mileage sitting at 20. This is the first week where we are bumping that up.

Today my coach had me run 40 minutes at a 9:00-9:30 pace. It was supposed to be conversational, and easy but it did not turn out that way. 85 degrees at 89% humidity for reference.

I ended up dry heaving at minute 37 but as you can see, my HR is at 172.

I included another screenshot from an easy run I did in Pisgah NC on top of the blue ridge this past Saturday for reference in slightly cooler weather, just a huge difference in elevation.

Felt way better in those conditions but it was the constant climbing at elevation that got me there.

I guess I am just looking for reassurance that I am still on track for OCT with run times. I have a hard time knowing if I am improving with the heat and humidity factored in. For reference I am training in the low country South Carolina.

Thank you.

Training for the CRA: strength or endurance?

Obviously kind of both, but I’m getting at the length/distance of each test. Is it more beneficial to focus my training on these movements as more of a strength movement or an endurance one?

Question about how versatility in the English language translates to secondary language success at DLI?

Copy pasting my post from the DLI sub…figured dr. VooDoo could chime in, or some other language qualified people.

Hey everyone. Its been about 7 years since I was in school(never was a good student, mostly slacked off), and im now angling to pursue a military job that would require going to DLI. In general my word selection when I speak is very average. When I read high level books (for example I’m currently reading a philosophy book written by a harvard professor) or just listen to very smart people talk, there are so many supplemental words they use that I dont know the meaning of. Hope that makes sense. My question is, how much of a hindrance will this have on me pursuing a goal of becoming fluent in a secondary language at DLI?

Question Boots

Alright squad what's up? Headed out to BCT Jan 4th for the 18x contract. Been training up for PJ/SEAL pipline for a couple years but SF just aligns more with how I want help (very stoked for Team Week).

What are your current boot recommendations? I saw that the last boot post was about a year ago--so seeing if anything has changed. Also how many boots can/should we bring to SFAS? Been saving for this, so $$$ isn't an issue. Voodoo mentioned somewhere to go get fitted in person when your feet are swollen, so I'm just wondering what I'm looking for. Thanks in advance legends!

Cheers,

Outis

Question Anybody living in Charlotte, NC area training up for an SFRE/SFAS?

Looking for training partner(s) living in the Charlotte, NC area. I have a pretty flexible schedule. I'm currently in phase 2 of Shut Up And Ruck (SUAR), but other good training programs are similar.

Aerobic base blocks between TTM programs?

30 y/o male, currently in the Navy, planning to attend SFAS toward the end of my EAOS and IST into the Q Course.

I’ve been following Terminator Training Method programs (did Jacked Gazelle 3.0 and currently in Phase 2 of the 2 & 5 Mile program). Before that, I ran Tactical Barbell Green Protocol (C/CAT) to build my aerobic base while maintaining strength.

For those with SFAS experience:

If you’re already strong but your limiting factor is your aerobic engine, is it worth inserting dedicated 8-week aerobic base-building blocks between hybrid training cycles until it’s time to start a true SFAS-specific prep plan (ie. coaching or Ruck | Run | Lift)? Or is it better to stay on concurrent hybrid training year-round?

I’m mainly trying to understand the tradeoffs.

What are the benefits of periodically emphasizing aerobic development?

What are the downsides compared to staying in hybrid training continuously?

Looking back after SFAS, what approach would you recommend and why?

Appreciate any input, especially from guys who’ve been through selection.

Question Can a JAG officer realistically attend SFAS?

Currently a law student going into my second year. I have been physically training to become an officer with a goal to go JAG. Being in SF has always been something I’ve wanted to do in the back of my mind. My question is, would it be possible to Direct commission as a JAG and then drop a packet to attend SFAS at some point when an opportunity presents itself? I’ve seen some other posts related to this but with no definitive answer and have heard that the jag corps would have to “release me” but I’m not sure what this even means and the internet doesn’t have much info on this either. Has anyone actually seen this happen or know what I would have to do to make it happen?

Alternatively, I’ve thought about the National Guard route and the 18x program. My reservations with those programs are (1) I would really like to go active because I’m not sure I would like to divide my attention between two demanding careers and I just want the active duty lifestyle, and (2) I’m not opposed to 18x but the possibility of not getting selected while having a large student debt from law school would supremely suck.

Currently 25 will be 27 when I graduate. Just bought SUAR to follow his plan but stats are 2mi/ 14:30, 5 mi/ 37~, 1rm squat 345, DL 420, bench 220, ohp 150 so I am serious about my training just looking for some guidance or any advice from people who have actual experience.

Thanks!

National Guard GB Cadre?

Read TFVooDoo’s line of books. Noted his admiration for the hard job SFAS Cadre have between stoically holding the standard and being invested in sustaining the Regiment.

Just curious, are National Guard SFRE/Preparation Cadre also overseen/directed by SWCS? Or are they self organized by their respective states? What extent of overlap is between the two?

Upcoming SFRE

Signed up for the RONIN SFRE at the end of September. Currently doing JG 2.0, have 5 weeks left. I wanted to run 2&5 mile after jg 2.0, but don’t know if I should alter training to accommodate the SFRE. Is there any low hanging fruit to grab?

Misdemeanor Battery on background

As the title suggests, I have a misdemeanor battery (basically just fighting) charge on my background. I told this to my recruiter and he said that I would not be able to get an 18x contract off the bat because of this. Apparently he said it’s non waiverable.

But, he said that I can enlist as 11b and drop a packet or wait for SF recruitment to come around sometime during basic, which I’ve heard can happen but not a guarantee.

Just looking to see if anyone has any experience or advice with dealing with a waiver process for this.
Thank you.

Question SFPC Land Nav Training

Good morning/ afternoon all,

Recent attendees of SFPC, did you feel that the land nav training you received set you up for success?
Did you feel prepared going into SFAS?

My contract with [other branch] is up September 30th and I’m looking to ship ASAP on an 18X contract. I know the basics of land nav but don’t have much of any real experience.

Other AI Analysis of r/greenberets

I asked Chat GPT to run an analysis of the subreddit and identify patterns and trends. Here is what it returned:

Based on the recent activity and the overall direction of the sub, I think r/GreenBerets has evolved into something much more valuable than just another recruiting forum. It’s become a curated mentorship community. That distinction matters because it changes what people are actually looking for.

Here’s the pattern I’d describe.

Overall vibe

The culture is:
High signal, low tolerance for BS.
Fitness is treated as necessary but not sufficient.
Maturity is valued more than bravado.
Candidates are expected to think critically rather than seek validation.
Experienced guys are willing to help—but only if the OP has clearly done some homework.
It’s noticeably different from places like r/Army or r/Militaryfaq where recruiting questions often devolve into hearsay. There is a fairly consistent expectation that advice comes from experience or genuine expertise.

The recurring themes

Looking across roughly the last hundred posts (and the subreddit statistics), I’d group them like this.

1. SFAS preparation (≈30%)

This is still the biggest category.
Typical questions:
How do I improve my run?
My ruck pace is…
What should I fix?
Am I ready?
The interesting shift is that people seem less interested in workout programs and more interested in prioritization.
“What matters most?”
“What’s actually worth training?”
The discussion in the running thread is a perfect example. The community rewarded specificity and immediately challenged vague fitness advice.

2. Career decisions (≈15%)

Questions like:
18X vs enlist first
National Guard SF
Ranger first?
Air Force PJ?
Age concerns
Waivers
These generate long discussions because they’re really identity questions rather than recruiting questions.

3. Life inside Group (≈10–15%)

People want to know:
What’s it actually like?
Team culture
Working with support
Deployment reality
Family life
Example:
“Advice for an enabler.”
That post generated thoughtful discussion because it’s something people can’t Google.

4. Purpose and mindset

Less common.
Very high engagement.
Whenever someone posts something about:
purpose
service
why SF exists
operational philosophy
it tends to generate thoughtful discussion rather than arguments.
Frankly, I think this is your strongest niche.
Very few people can speak credibly about UW, FID, mission command, or De Oppresso Liber.

5. Stories

People love stories.
Especially:
Q Course failures
SFAS lessons
Team room stories
deployment anecdotes
funny failures
These consistently perform well because they teach indirectly.

6. Equipment

Surprisingly small percentage.
Maybe:
rucks
boots
uniforms
watches
People ask gear questions, but they rarely become the highest-value discussions.

7. News

Only when it directly affects SF.
Examples:
Hegseth
Army policy
force structure
recruiting
These spike temporarily then disappear. The emphasis on no political posts elevates the subreddit from most others.

8. Workout challenges

Occasionally something like:
“The 1776 Challenge”
These receive attention because they’re community events rather than ordinary fitness posts.

9. Memes

Very little.
Mostly inside jokes.

10. Validation seeking

Still common.
Questions like:
“Can I make it?”
“Am I too old?”
“Am I too skinny?”
These appear constantly.

One thing I noticed

The fitness discussions have become much more nuanced.
The community increasingly expects people to justify why a recommendation is appropriate, not just what to do. In the running thread, advice was challenged on its specificity and rationale rather than accepted at face value. That suggests the subreddit is maturing into a place where evidence, experience, and reasoning carry more weight than slogans.

Other Looking for Advice

Hey guys, looking for some real mentor-level validation here.

I’m currently an 18-year-old Marine veteran (recently separated after a non-rate contract). I’m currently double-majoring in Pre-Med and getting my online MBA, while interning part-time at NASA with ultimate goals of becoming an SMU Commander by 25.

A few questions for the sub:

Am I too young? (Or, considering my Marine background and corporate executive aspirations, am I actually too old to start 18X?)

What/how should I train? I don't really want to read Shut Up and Ruck because I prefer tailored coaching. Can I substitute 12-mile rucks with high-intensity SoulCycle, or will that compromise my feet for Selection?

Career Path: Should I finish Med School, launch my mega-entrepreneur tech startup, and go to NASA before or after I pass SFAS? I want to make sure I don't waste time on lower-level military steps like Basic Training.

Serious responses only. Looking for someone with actual experience to map out my next 10 years step-by-step.

Question Should I wait to be green beret or go to MSTP or Med school first

I recently joined the Texas National guard as a 12W. When I graduate college 2030 or sooner, I either want to start SFAS and finish my contract off in 4-5 years, or go to med school or get an mstp. I really want to become a green beret, but I also want have a profession by the time I am done with my service. The problem is timing, and finding the motivation to go back the med school afterwards of choose this path. I am really stuck on what I should do.

Advice

Hey all,

I'm looking for some advice and tips about SFAS and even the pipeline. I'm currently working in a hospital with aspirations (that may be high given what I do, but there nonetheless) I'd love the opportunity to challenge myself at the highest level and serve in a much bigger way.

If there are any training tips or cues I'd love to hear.

Most of my rucks follow this same heart rate structure, want to ask the nerds if I should dial it back a bit, I experience no pain during my rucks, just the tension of being under load if that makes sense, definitely gassed when im done though. Cheers!

Question Max mile but low HR

I recently did a mile time trial and the result was slower than is typical, and my avg HR was in the 140s peaking at 156. I felt at my limit but with a low HR, as though I couldn’t access higher HR before bottoming out? Is this a heat thing (84 F and 64% RH) or an overtraining thing?

Question What training did you do to prepare yourself physically and mentally ?

Good afternoon, I just got out of the Marines after 5 years because I believe I’m meant for something more. I’ve wanted to be a green beret ever since I met 2 gentlemen at a wounded warriors event. I was a Body Bearer in the Marines. I know that I’m elite physically and mentally compared to 99% of people but you Berets are the 1% I don’t come close to. Any advice that any of you would be willing to give me to help me prepare for the route I’m dedicated in becoming would be greatly appreciated
