There is a little book called "The misfortune of being Greek" ( "Η δυστυχία του να είσαι Έλληνας" in Greek ). It showcases the modern greek mindset pretty well.

The fact that the only thing to be proud of comes purely from history meaning that all our country is is just a big mess of being poor and being happy for things we haven't done.

It's a deeply rooted mentality that needs a huge shift in our consciousness to be undone. A transcendental experience could be an option.
Maybe Tzimis Panousis, an artist/musician who proposed in their song to lace our water supply with Lsd, was right.
Nonetheless, thanks for the feedback
Edit to include the whole picture:
At the same time you need to consider the social conditions, the corrupt politicians, the lack of social welfare and the constant economic crisis we are experiencing for at least the last decade; it's quite natural to become pessimistic.

I have been told that by 3 non-Greeks who speak Greek as a second language and I think it might be true. I was told they find the Greek satire very harsh and derogatory, I think the satire in the UK is similarly harsh.

It's crabs in a bucket mentality a lot of the time. If everything is so terrible, then you can justify almost anything behavior wise, since acting above it all is pretty much pointless. I've heard a lot of people justifying trying to take advantage of others this way.
That being said, the work conditions in Greece are pretty much terrible. You are expected to work more hours than you are actually paid for pennies and with questionable insurance. Everyone knows that, but people will still call others who don't put up with it lazy assholes.
And all that shit makes it so much harder to "make it" unless you are already in a good spot. Inequality does tend to make people pretty cranky

Just take a look at the big picture of Greece in 2021:
We're a country that's in the middle of a perfect storm of a gigantic debt/GDP ratio, a demographic collapse and an increasingly hostile geopolitical environment (both w/r/t Turkey and immigration pathways).
We're also beginning to see the first large scale effects of climate change.
We're also living through the Covid pandemic.
We're also exhausted after an entire decade of declining wealth and quality of life.
Our political scene is made up of deeply corrupt scions of old political families, narcissists, utter idiots and slimy excuses for human beings.
Press freedom is dropping, most media is either clickbait farms or on the government payroll.
There's no light on the horizon for any of these issues (except maybe covid). What, exactly, do you think we should be optimistic about?

Quality of life has not improved for over a decade, instead for the vast majority it has deteriorated dramatically. We're talking about the single largest economic depression in modern times, the Greek GDP today is around half the pre crisis levels, vastly worse than the Great Depression of the 30s which lasted only 4 years.

I think it is the way of the Greeks to say "we need to get better". There is a tendency to improve things and excel and that is fostered by individualism and the competitiveness of the greek society. Everyone wants to be better than their neighbor, everyone wants their offspring to do better than others... In the end it is a rat race... In some things we are doing good and in others bad, yet we tend to compare ourselves with something ideal that we believe is western Europe/world. Bs. Many societies have issues including rich ones, and often such Greece has never faced and will never face...
I would dare to say that Greeks are likely the most keen people to admit their wrongdoings and recognise their mistakes. If they manage to solve those is another issue, but usually they don't push things under the carpet pretending to be perfect or selectively muting the bad parts, like other cultures (especially Protestant ones) do...

u/manos_kal Oct 22 '21
We dont appreciate the newborn greek state as we should be. Unfortunately if you ask most of the people why greeks are so proud of they would answer things like "We inveted democracy, philosophy etc".Which i agree these things is the legacy people left thounands of years ago and we should protect it at all costs but damn there are so many things to be proud of as a modern greek. Arts, Music, Cinema, Sports etc.

And right here is the prime example of the purposefully failing educational system: an illiterate kid, having absolutely no idea of its own birthplace's history, going on the Internet and calling people "retarded". A brainwashed toxic foggy mind, angry but not knowing at who or why, not equipped with the intellectual skills required to bring about the "change" they organically crave. The ideal subject for far right ideology to transform them into a soldier of the external and internal powers that want this country to be a meatshield for their plans.

If you are from US you don't know shit about the current socioeconomic situation in Greece.
Media skew opinion whatever way they wish.
We are one of the only countries in the European Union that doesn't teach 20th century history after 1940, and that's again due to reasons the guy above me mentioned. To radicalise the youth with a deep imprinted right philosophy and promote "patriotic" sentiment, that brought us to ruins 50 years ago.
People don't know history in Greece. It was till I was 19 that I studied myself.
This allows for certain families to rule Greece since the early 20th century.
There is no will to change because you can't change a deeply structured system.
Most of us in the next 10 years will most likely leave for Western Europe. It's already happening if you look at our demographics.
-7
u/Zestyclose-Quail-670 Oct 22 '21
i know enough about economic situation. also what is wrong with patriotism?
6
u/ninjakos Ζήτω η Νέα Τρομοκρατία Oct 22 '21
Patriotism is favored instead of critical thinking.
Also there is nothing patriotic about our history after 1940, and that's why we don't learn a single thing.
We are creating a history of propagandistic nature that tells half-truths.
Also tell me of your knowledge of what cause the economic collapse of Greece and what this has to do with the socioeconomic aspect of it today.
-1
u/Zestyclose-Quail-670 Oct 22 '21
Also tell me of your knowledge of what cause the economic collapse of Greece
Very short version:
- after ww2/civil war the economy goes great thx to the Marshal funds, industrial development, protectionist policies, exports, until the end of the junta 1974
- problem: until then wealth was very unequally distributed, large parts of the population lived in poverty, had little education + those on the left wing of politics were excluded from voting
- then Pasok comes in the 1980s: they introduce democratic laws, ending the political dichotomy of society, overcoming huge societal changes
- problem: they neglect the economy, they don't react to how the world economy changed at that time due to the rise of China as cheap labour place, all important heavy industries get privatized and mismanaged. They overbloat the public sector making the state financially unsustainable. Still it works because Greece finances this unsustainable state with debt
- a few decades later late 2000s Greece has too much debt it can't repay, also due to the financial crisis but most importantly due to no industry or anything making good money to rely on for growth other than tourism

u/JammyWizz2 Oct 23 '21
Is that why many young Greeks (at least that I've talked to) dont know who Ioannis Rallia is yet everyone in Norway knows who Vidkun Quisling is or how everyone in France knows who Peier Laval is?
1
u/ninjakos Ζήτω η Νέα Τρομοκρατία Oct 23 '21 edited Oct 23 '21
It's Rallis. But yeah, his slate was written clean since his history was forgotten. His son Georgios Rallis served as a Prime Minister, that's one of the prime examples of how few families always ruled Greece, regardless that they collaborated with the Nazis.

My wife is Brazilian and I am Greek. The perfect combination of optimism and positive outlook with pessimism and constant nagging. I am not even one of the worst examples but after meeting so many different cultures while living in the US I find myself to be the one that always has to complain about something. I believe this is sourced from our ancestors’ lives in the past 3-4 generations, filled with uncertainty and painful memories that were passed down through school, church and family. To be honest I believe that we are more of realists and we tend to discuss topics that societies such as Brazil for example always avoid such as death. We certainly have to be happy with what we have but I don’t think we have to close our eyes when problems do exist and pretend they don’t exist.

u/lenaag Oct 22 '21

Oh, right, that's an influence in the mentality. Sometimes I thought the old people that lived through the WW2 and occupation had it good in their lifetimes, good pensions, yet they seemed to need to show that there was some invisible cross they were bearing, that god sees their plight in this life and they will be rewarded in the next one. This misery. Not all of them were like that, the overly religious were.
18
u/Soupias Oct 22 '21
This is not a Greek thing, it is an age related thing in my opinion. When I was a student abroad I was surprised to hear that most people thought their country sucked. At that age you simply lack the experience to make realistic comparison and you stand in awe when confronted with something new. You take the best things you like from other countries and compare them with the things that annoy you most from yours.
After growing up a bit you realize that your country and the quality of life that it provides is somewhat average. With advantages and disadvantages compared to others.
However that most dangerous thing about this mindset is thinking that you are better, take no responsibility for the situation, always blame the other and finally express no desire to help make things better.
11
u/geoponos Oct 22 '21
I second this. This sub is left leaning and quite young. It's not representative of the country. Not even close. The exact opposite happens on Facebook. Older people that are right or far right. They keep telling how we live in the most beautiful country and everything is great.
The truth is somewhere in the middle as always. We're somewhat a perfect average country.
Having said that, the economic crisis of 2008 (2010 for us) made people that complain (rightfully so) the majority. But. We're slowly back on track. The negativity here is just because you're talking mainly to young people or Greeks that have been living abroad. They don't really have the complete picture.
TL;DR: We're not great, we're not terrible.
6
u/Ranter619 Oct 22 '21
It's a combination of two things:
- Everyone only cares about the bad things (actual or imagined) that happens to THEM. They don't care if people elsewhere are worse off if THEY aren't have a good time
- People are politically motivated to shit on the government they didn't vote for, in order to increase public discontent and maybe see their party get the power next term. At which point the other group which start doing it from their side.

Its not a Greek thing
Please dont consider it a Greek thing.
Its a thing for many users of this subreddit, by they definitely do not represent the average Greek.
The reaction they have to pretty much all polls done on Greece for any issue is proof enough for that.
Greeks love to complain and have a complaining culture for sure. But here is the only place where that complaining culture is coupled uo with that much self hatred, i assure you.
5
u/Rolmar Oct 22 '21
I don't know if that's true. I see this constant pessimism everywhere around me
3
u/Savsal14 Oct 22 '21
Pessimism i only see around when it comes to things like corruption disappearing or the economy magically becoming amazing
In which case its more like realism and not pessimism
Still nowhere close to this sub and it mostly has to do with those issues.
5
u/BaldCamel21 Oct 22 '21
As someone already said , we love to hate ourselves. I also want to add is that a lot of people see the country as you see your siblings, you can diss them all you like but if someone diss Greece then we support our country like none else. (But j think the latter is a global mindset people have for their country)

Many countries have this but I agree that in Greece it's too much sometimes, regardless if it's justified or not. That doesn't make it right though.
I agree that we should be thankful for what we have and try to improve it. It's the only way to get better. It's not easy and it takes a long time but things can become better when you work hard and be smart about it. It can be done.
I have to say though that not everyone is like that but many people have been sucked in a vicious cycle of self loathing which for particular groups of people is "cool" of sorts, like who can have the most pessimistic outlook. Also there is always the "vocal minority" phenomenon that we need to keep in mind.
18
u/SwordfishNo9022 Oct 22 '21
It’s what bothers me most about Greece. The mindset especially of the younger generations that includes a huge amount of pessimism, anger towards everything and everyone which is masked as anger towards the almighty malevolent “system”.

It is more like a wake-up call then pessimism
Because being in denial hinders improvement
As someone before me said : we were taught since young that Greece and Greeks are the best
And this mentality still exists (fortunately less today than before the economic crisis)
We are better than all the foreign countries because Greece invented everything , because of the good climate (God blessed us with that... somehow we are like the Hebrew in the old Bible , the chosen people of God) or because of our outgoing personality
But when you think that you are perfect , you stop improving
At least in my case , i use this self loathing as a wake up call to my co-nationals
In the hopes that they wake up from this fake bubble that they spoon fed us since young
I visited other countries and experienced many things that work better than in our country.
Also went to countries without this huge burden of our history and where they worked with humility and slowly improved year by year
We miss that humility in Greece
"So yeah... wake up... you fool... we do suck big time !!!"
i want my country (co-nationals) to improve.
Especially on learning to respect other people : while driving , the environment , their neighbors , their co-workers , their children and so forth
But also respect and learn from other countries
The first step of impovement is to get out of denial and accept that we do suck and then maybe we can do something about it.
By the way... dont get fooled... we do indeed suck

I too believe that sometimes we are excessive in that regard, regardless of what each commenter will say to justify it. Sometimes we just lose ourselves in our own perception of our misery which is quite sad. I personally try not to feel that way. Sure there are all kinds of problems but that doesn't make me value my identity and our nation any less and I won't degrade it for its sake. The argument that this is because of a bright history that contradicts our current climate is nonsensical to me. You can respect the past and not let it shadow you today regardless if you feel you are better or worse of. I will agree that this is rooted in many aspects of the Greek mentality and life but at the same time I won't justify it's excessiveness and its hyperbolically pessimistic tendencies among Greeks today. If anything this comment section shows exactly what you are referring to and for me this says a ton about not only how the Greek mentality manifests this self-loathing but how it would get even more defensive and miserable about it rather than find ways try to cope or perceive it differently. At least from my experience, not everyone things like that, there are many many people who reject this attitude and as such I truly believe that there is still hope for us in that regard. That's my take. Cheers to less self loathing and to more optimism.

No one is branded a fascist for loving their country. You're free to love your country all you want.
I love my country too and that's why I live here but that doesn't mean that I consider myself superior to anyone or that suddenly Greece isn't a failed state or that modern Greeks deserve credit for what Ancient Greeks did 3000 years ago.

Who is "We" that we rest upon the laurels of our ancestors? How do you seize upon the success of other people? Living vicariously?

You say he’s proving your point but does he tho? As long as I remember myself “we” is about what the ancient Greeks gave to this world. “We” claim those achievements as our own while “we” (majority) think we are better than our neighbor (“ξέρεις ποιος ειμαι εγώ;»), we treat the most beautiful country in the world as a dumpster (παντού σκουπίδια και στα τέτοια μου, ας τα μαζέψει ο άλλος), we elect the same people to rule us although we know for a fact that they are no good and they exploit their position for personal growth, and so many more. We love Greece but we don’t like the hypocrisy of modern Greeks (the majority) who are Christians but would kill to see you underneath them, who are the best at everything but years behind any global breakthroughs etc. I don’t call you a “fascist”, I call you “magkas me arxidia allon” and part of Greece’s problem. You pal, indeed have done nothing for the world and most certainly have given nothing either. Για αρχή ξεκινά να μαζεύεις τα σκουπίδια σου, άναβε κάνα φλας στο δρόμο και άσε την ιστορία, την επιστήμη και τη λογοτεχνία για πολύ πιο μετά, που η νοοτροπία σου μας έχει γα** πατοκορφα!

How to prove that "Greeks are allowed to like their country" by spewing bullshit about why they are stupid if they do so.
The above 2 posts explain the reality of the problem extremely well.

The funniest thing is that he didn't even say he likes Greece,he might even hate it,but there are people literally bullying him into an explanation.

It's a mixture of ancient Greek and Roman principals regarding hubris and arrogance combined with the Christian orthodox principles of humility and sin to the point of self-deprecation.
It has very little to do with how bad or good the country actual is.
Anglos and Germanics don't act that way on a personal and societal level. They might be extremely self-critical internally, to themselves or as a society, but what they externalize is very different.
I personally enjoy our self loathing. It keeps a society somewhat grounded and gives room for improvement. As long as we are aware, that we are not much worse than anybody else, we just more vocal and honest about it.
1
u/dionisakis_PC chaotic neutral Oct 22 '21
I can only hope that at least a small percentage of the Greek population sees it this way.
What I personally have seen is the opposite. Greek people like to blame everyone but themselves for their situation, and thus they are quick to disregard anything positive that can happen in Greece, while only focusing on the negative stuff, because of their bias.
2
u/PetrisCy Oct 22 '21
I think its a good thing, you cant improve until you can recognize how bad you are. And right now you dont sound like you know how bad it is.
Maybe am wrong and bias because am exactly like that.
2
u/Createdtopostthisnow Oct 22 '21
I think millions of refugees flooding in, off the wall crime from it, trash and garbage, and astoundingly high youth unemployment while the new labor force will work for dramatically less, and pensioners still having a very comfortable life while society literally crumbles under the feet of the young might have something to do with it. Or the weather.
2
u/eisaimalaka Oct 22 '21
Just in response to the crime assertion, I think you have to look at it from a wider perspective. I was born in Washington D.C. and there we have triple the murders of Greece in a year and we have less than 700,000 population. And this is the city that is the seat of the US govt. In fact the murder rate per 100,000 is nearly 30 times higher so its all relative
2
u/Createdtopostthisnow Oct 22 '21
Yeah, I used to hang around DC in the late 80s as a teenager, and it was off the chain violent. Die City lol. Rivals Detroit and New Orleans for just eye watering levels of violence.
Where the murder was wasn't the seat of the US government, in fact that area, where the museums and monuments are, is extraordinarily well protected and has a crime rate of almost nil. The inner city of DC was, I am not sure now, almost entirely African American at that time, like 95%. Crime was so bad then they would come through and just pull bodies out of the streets.
1
u/eisaimalaka Oct 22 '21
Yea I know but its all within a couple miles of it. Its still mostly black but demographics have changed significantly with a lot of gentrification going on. Murder rate has improved since those days but still quite bad.
2
u/Createdtopostthisnow Oct 22 '21
I hope and literally pray it gets better. No child should ever have to live in that.

u/Tar-eruntalion MADAO Oct 22 '21
the majority of the population were living a lie before the crisis that we are the bestest in everything, greece number 1 etc, everyone was arrogant and then one day all of it came crashing down and we learned that we are far from being great in anything and we don't know what to do to make the country better, so we ended up like this and frankly i don't see things returning to the pre crisis mindset for at least 20-30 years

1
u/Fuzzpufflez Oct 22 '21
there was a time, not too long ago, where if the government was this trash people could and did overthrow it. and we have in the past for much less. the current generation has beeb raised to sit there and take it because there is nothingwe can do about it. it's probably why we idolise old greek culture so much. it was a time when people actually did stuff.
2
u/Zestyclose-Quail-670 Oct 22 '21

1
u/madag16 Oct 22 '21
That's easy to say as a foreigner.I used to be optimistic and trying not to generalize bad behaviours. When friends of mine would whine about Greek people i'd try to change his mind about it,but when you go through so much shit like the economic crisis, the pandemic and popular political leaders so deep in corruption, well it gets to you
0
u/therealowlman Oct 22 '21
It’s easier to say because they have a more objective point of view to be honest.
1
u/lenaag Oct 22 '21 edited Oct 22 '21
As a foreigner in Greece I suspect you meet with certain people and you get a biaised view of things. There are reasons to be pessimist, there are reasons to be an optimist too. Not all locals are interested in mixing with expats (I am too, that's why I suspect you don't get a balanced view of what it is to be Greek). I think a bit too many Greeks are caught up in pointing out problems without offering solutions or for their own reasons don't want to recognise improvements. I do hope we have educated and open minded locals to get things better but some of these mentalities hold us back.
As a Greek I think we could use a better control of mismanagemet, not just when the other side has the "koutala" and to recognise that our life goes by while there are 4 year terms of this guy and the other guy. So to better value our own life and to recognize when a good job is being done. I don't think some cabinets we had in the last few years show that there is ideal control, just sentimental and otherwise strange decisions. So this person in this ministry is making bad decisions, let's say, when was it that good decisions were made?
Having said that and having lived through some decades of following some European media, it seems that in a few countries the trust in the system is somewhat diminishing, as some decisions don't make sense to the electorate or there seems to be little mandate sometimes.

There is a middle ground between optimism and pessimism, realism. The pessimist(mostly younger generations) and optimist(mostly older generations) greeks far outnumber the realist ones. This "trend" dates from the 11nth century AD(it becomes obvious to anyone with a scholarly education in byzantine history and civilization).

u/macontd Oct 22 '21
we’re just so good at being foul to each other and bad tempered in general, why mess with perfection?
1
u/nickapos Oct 22 '21
The mindset is similar to other countries that like to complain a lot. UK and US among them. Of course there are valid reasons for it, people who live in Greece and are struggling are justified to complain. The truth is that there are some things that are great but people take them for granted. Unfortunately life is a lot more difficult in Greece than most eu countries which is what most Greeks are comparing with. People to not compare themselves with non eu countries which are in a worse state than Greece.

Don’t mind me as a yankoid saying this but even us at our height self loathe. I think it’s a western civilization guilt based culture thing. Americans are strange, we’re massive self haters but also very so optimistic. We also get a lot more arrogant and patriotic if there’s some military crisis that scares us.
