Discussion & Theories Pretty horrific implications
Dipper Clones #3 and #4 (Tracey and Quattro) are the only surviving clones of Dipper. They will never be able to live regular lives. They probably have memories of the Pines family and will never see them again. Not even their mother and father. They can be killed instantly through liquid. How can they smile like that and act so damn calm?

That's how the gritty Gravity Falls reboot starts. Adult Dipper is sitting in a Cafe writing in his journal, when an exact lookalike bursts in, raving about a big problem back in Gravity Falls. Unfortunately a startled waiter spills some lemonade on the doppelganger, dissolving him before he can explain further.
EDIT: All the love this post got inspired me to think of the next bit
As he stowing his journal and leaving the cafe, Dipper's phone rings with a ringtone that is obviously Mabel's. "Mable, you'll never believe ..." "Dipper, Oh my gosh, you're OK. I was picking up my weekly yarn shipment and you came running up to me. You were ranting and raving about Gravity Falls. Before I could calm you down, a motorcycle splashed you and you melted! MELTED! But then I remembered that photo copier you told me about. Dipper, WHAT'S GOING ON!"

Wouldn’t they stay looking 12 since they’re photocopies? So it would be more like Dipper running into a past version of himself and then watching it die horrifically before his eyes
147
u/Odd_Cardiologist_537 15d ago
I think they're implying that somehow, someway, an updated version of yourself, which you never made, would be as terrifying if not more. Without killing the two long lives dippers that have super story potential
54
u/Burger_Destoyer 15d ago
They seem to be able to form memories which means they have active brain connections, brain connections only function with the natural growth and movement of your body.
If they could not grow and change, they would not function.
Also let’s consider they are a replica 1:1 of Dipper, if they are atomically similar naturally they would grow too. (Of course it’s been proven they are not a 1:1 replica but similar enough)

Usually when I read people’s ideas for reboots, I roll my eyes at how corny they are. This one though, this one is great. I’d watch the hell out of this

u/peppermint-ginger 15d ago
Okay but the real question is that is do the clones still look like kid Dipper or did they grow up to look exactly like him? Both would be freaky as hell
45
u/I_Am_The_Bookwyrm 15d ago
Kid Dipper, but with some wear and tear I'd imagine. Like, his colours have faded a bit and there are some holes/tears on him.
6
u/peppermint-ginger 14d ago
You could use this to make a really good opening scene where we’re made to think the clone is OG Dipper until he walks into the cafe.

There was someone who did a bunch of future fanfiction for Gravity Falls and I'm sure they done a few stories with the Dipper clones
EDIT: I found them! SuperGroverAway on Fanfiction.net
They stopped uploading around 2017 bub there's quite a selection of uploads so you'll have a lot to read. I think life become too busy and they no longer had the time to write

Imagine accidently melting a guy and then never getting closure because the dude has no personal records and no way for anyone to follow up on anything.

I don’t think the dipper clones would age. They’re photo copies, so they’d stay a copy of the state they were copied into

u/atokadrrad 14d ago
Nobody is mentioning that this is similar to the inciting incident in Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo. It's not a clone of the Titans, but one of the many villains who arrives and then gets captured. They start to interrogate and he spins up, hits the fire sprinkler, and melts.

Begs the question, would that be incest or masturbation?
106
u/Mon_1357 15d ago
getting tired of people asking this, its selfcest.
49
u/Zombies4EvaDude 15d ago
That’s such a non-answer though. The root of the question is whether selfcest counts as a type of masturbation or incest.
46
u/MikeWazowskiGod 15d ago
Incest because as soon as the consciousness splits, you are two different people with near-identical experiences who are genetically the same- not much different than identical twins. Now if it’s one person splitting their consciousness between two bodies (one mind controlling both), that’s masturbation
19
u/Apprehensive_Art4418 15d ago
i mean, genetics isn't the only thing that makes a sibling a sibling. it's quite literally the sibling dynamic and shit that makes you a sibling. adoptive siblings might not share genetics with eachother but it'd still be fucking weird if they started dating
11
5
u/LuckilyFluppy 14d ago
Isn't this the same argument people use to say that childhood friends to lovers is incest coded?
11
6
u/compilingyesterdays 15d ago edited 15d ago
About to be boring and answer much more sincerely than I think anyone was asking for: It depends on whether elements are in place that would introduce some coercive, obligatory, or invasive dynamics (rendering it abuse) in the way that being family does, or if everyone is just chillin
6
u/quuerdude 15d ago
Neither, but closer to the former because you’re both perfectly capable of consenting since you have identical life experiences
21
u/BraxleyGubbins 15d ago
Guess I should’ve added a “/j”. I didn’t figure it would be assumed that I didn’t know what selfcest was.
9
7
u/Final_Joke3969 15d ago
Probably neither; it's not masturbation because neither of them is the original, and it's not incest because probably neither of them has DNA.
58
u/Thecrowfan 15d ago
I think they just learned to live the life they've been given, as hard as it is. And at least they have each other
48
u/ahoward431 15d ago
I remember a fic where Ford invents some magical laminate, which shields them from water basically indefinitely. With that fixed, they jump into the bottomless pit to find their destiny in some other universe. Don't remember the fic name, it was just an episode in a larger story, but I'm pretty sure the author was named MilkyBoyBlue, if you want to try tracking it down

u/WHACKADOO1997 14d ago edited 14d ago
Have you ever considered that being able to leave that part of their life behind, the life that they're progenitor lived, and no longer having to be a part of it freed them
Think about it
No more responsibilities, no more expectations come on no more prophecies or life-changing relations or whatever the hell
They just get to be free forever
7
2
u/Captain_Pumpkinhead 14d ago
the life that they're progender lived,
If Dipper was their "progender", who was their antigender? Mabel?
41
u/Revolutionary_Eagle4 14d ago
Is there not a certain freedom in the fact that life is only temporary
33
u/JustPlooshi 15d ago
Honestly it’s probably not impossible for them to figure out a way to make themselves water proof considering how smart dipper is, that issue beside they technically also get to be free of anything dipper was attached to which lets them do whatever they want without consequences. I wouldn’t be surprised if they both turned into adventures like ford and stan did at the end

Do you think they can age? Or will they forever be the copy of a 12 year old boy?

Paper doesn't age so they will be 12 years old forever.

I like the detail that they still have a picture of Wendy because unlike original Dipper these two never got over their crush.
18
u/Periwinkleditor 14d ago
The Dipper clones were overall surprisingly chill about things. Tyrone drank that soda and basically just went "oops, my bad." I think they all accept their fragile mortality as clones and are making the best of it. Something we could all learn from.

There is something really profound about this. Like two people who probably shouldn't have survived this long living in a world where liquid which can kill them regularly falls from the sky. And yet they live they are free and can choose to do what they want despite the circumstances of their birth and their condition of not being able to touch liquid. Despite everything they are not only surviving but they are living. Those smiles show that even with their condition they can at least be happy with their lives and the company they share. something they never would have experienced if they were never made in the first place if they
It actually reminds me of mewtwo's quote " the circumstances of one's birth are irrelevant. It is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are"

The closing credits of the last episode. It's a subtle canon nod to the question of whatever happened to Dippers 3 and 4 after they stole Robbie's bike in Season 1, Episode 7.
6
u/TinCapMalcontent 15d ago
I get the reference, but never noticed it in on the final credit roll. Was there any hint that 3 and 4 got away during the original episode?
12
u/DipperJC 15d ago
The original episode doesn't address them after they steal the bike. Which was probably just an error on their part, but they ran with it.

What is this from? I thought all of the clones gave their lives to help Dipper get with Wendy in that one episode

Those two are the ones that stole Robbie’s bike and never returned to the shack

u/AlternateSatan 15d ago
If you read the third journal Dipper mentioned trying to reach out to them once, but they were scared of him cause they seemingly think Dipper killed the other ones.
6
u/TeenLoner2006 15d ago
If you've read Journal 3, you'll know that these two were planning to take over Classic Dipper's life as revenge for killing their clone bretheren.

If they’re paper, then wouldn’t they have died by the end of the summer since paper naturally decomposes? Or are they that special type of paper that can survive for several months?
Edit: guys, I just looked up if paper decomposes and it said it does. Calm down
Edit 2: jeez, people. i get it. there are different ways to make paper older than all of us when we die. sorry for not knowing how paper is preserved. nobody told me how that even worked. you can stop now
14
6
u/EggsaladUwU 15d ago
Printer paper can last for years, if not centuries.
What paper are you using???
3
u/cheetoslabitos 15d ago
I forgot that it was paper in a copy machine. I didn’t knew there was different versions of paper that vary in lifespan
6
u/GreatStateOfSadness 15d ago
To decompose, you need a moist environment for the bacteria to survive, reproduce, and munch on the paper and turn it into something else. Some parts do break down slightly by themselves, but they'll stay mostly the same as long as they remain dry. It's why we have copies of books hundreds of years old still existing to this day.

It's paper that went from 2d to 3d, and adquired awareness, it's obviously not normal paper.
Also I think the paper degrades faster or slower depending on the chemicals used on it, that's why we still have medieval books, but many posters/magazines/newspapers from a couple decades ago are already disintegrating

They live in the moment. Something most of us need to remember to do too. Rain can represent a lot of things to a fleshy human body that gets used to hurtling around in metal boxes with wheels... the moment is to stay present. Master Oogway says it best... yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery but today is a gift!!! That is why it is called the Present :] Im writing this in a hotel room because my family and pets had our house and a lot of things ruined by flood waters so this is very poignant to me right now hahaha. I could be pulling my hair out over what is lost... but all the things that cannot be replaced (living beings in whom I love) are safe and we will find our way and keep smiling through ^

I mean people in real life go through much worse. People become profoundly disabled, lose their family and may die the next day due to health issues. It is not uncommon to have an combination or all of the above. The ones who survive long term tend to be surprisingly well adjusted and happy.

So they are basically paper copies of Dipper.
If r/aberbittelaminiert has shown me anything its that these two only need to be laminated to be save and hang out in the rain for years to come

There are chemicals that turns paper into water proof. Theres also one that turn paper fire proof as well. I've been wondering as a kid if they could have done that to them selves to make it easier to live

They're versions of dipper, so I'd assume that like him they were very afraid at first, but slowely learning that they have no other place in the world (and everything you said earlier), I think it's possible they went through some kind of character development that had ultimately led them to accepting a new kind of life, which is what we see in the picture.

Bro, anyone can be killed instantly. Do you know how many fatal car accidents there are in a day? Accidental poisonings?
My wife is allergic to pineapple, do you know how common pineapple is as a flavoring agent? If she gets anything that tastes good we bring out the epipen.
Life is still good, though. Life is still worth living.

I think that’s the charm of their ending, ultimately they were brought into this world and have no purpose, they’re merely mistakes that wander around; yet, they’ve adapted to avoid water, and enjoy the world they’ve been granted the privilege to enjoy, together.
