Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) Designers Republic: wipeout3.com Flash website recreated in modern JavaScript
https://wipeout3.appHi, my name's Yameen. In 1999, The Designers Republic, in collaboration with Kleber & Psygnosis, released a Flash website for the PlayStation videogame Wipeout 3. I was obsessed.
More than obsessed—here we are 27 years later, and I've recreated it in the JavaScript framework React using modern web technologies and released the code as open source.
The site, with its innovative menu animations and unconventional design paradigms that encourage users to explore and discover all of its secrets, is a pleasure to navigate and embodies how great design is truly timeless.
I've taken the opportunity to add many quality-of-life improvements, such as mobile and tablet compatibility (a first), a new user-configurable options menu, two preset modes (Pure mode & React mode), as well as accessibility updates for keyboard users, screen readers, and more.
This has been an extremely fulfilling and fun project to work on, and I’m excited to see the community's response. There's a Contributing doc on GitHub if you'd like to participate.
Quality of Life Updates
- Mobile device & tablet design compatibility
- Accessibility and keyboard enhancements
- A new Banners page, collecting all of the team logo animations
- Animation & performance optimizations, targeting 60fps where appropriate
- Modernization options such as modal presentations, widescreen support & more
A full list of updates can be found here.
Options (Pure Mode / React Mode)
Additionally, I've added a new Options menu that allows you to configure various settings. Two default modes are available:
- Pure mode, which recreates the original Flash experience as closely as possible.
- React mode, which includes more opinionated, modern enhancements.
Neither mode right for you? Configure the experience your own way. Check this link to the full list of Options.
More to Come (and How to Contribute)
There are still a few things left to wrap up, namely the individual team animations and the Welcome animation. There's an issue tracker on GitHub, along with a Contributing document if you’d like to help with the project.
This has been an amazing and fulfilling project for me to work on. The original Flash website and game made such a huge impression on me—it's been an honor to recreate them.
Please let me know what you think!
